Chapter 8 - THE SECOND SON INSIDE THE TRUST

Lucia placed the second ring on the worktable.
It appeared identical to Carmine’s.
The weight was the same.
The crest carried the same microscopic grooves.
Only the inner initials differed.
Carmine’s ring contained C D.
The second contained N D.
“Nicholas DeLuca,” Lucia said.
Carmine’s father had another son.
Nicholas was born two years before Carmine to a woman named Elena Bell.
Lorenzo never acknowledged him publicly.
He paid for his education, housing, and medical care through hidden accounts managed by Vincent.
Elena later married an actor named Samuel Bell.
Nicholas used his stepfather’s surname.
Adrian Bell, the impersonator connected to the copper room, was Nicholas’s son.
Carmine stared at Lucia.
“You hired my nephew to wear my face.”
“I gave Lorenzo’s blood the position he was denied.”
“You created false orders in my name.”
“You were dismantling everything our family built.”
“I was separating legitimate employees from criminal control.”
“You were surrendering power.”
Lucia believed the DeLuca organization survived because people feared the name.
Carmine’s efforts to reduce violence and move assets into lawful companies looked like weakness to her.
Nicholas promised to preserve the old structure.
Yet he could not take control while Carmine remained alive and publicly recognized.
The impersonation operation created another path.
Use Adrian to issue damaging orders in Carmine’s name.
Move funds.
Threaten allies.
Create evidence that Carmine had become unstable.
Then present Nicholas as the hidden family successor capable of restoring order.
The poisoned whiskey would have accelerated the plan.
If Carmine survived impaired, Vincent could seek emergency control.
If he died, the second ring and sealed paternity records would establish Nicholas as Lorenzo’s son.
I looked toward Lucia.
“Why frame me?”
“Because Thomas Hale’s daughter was the perfect enemy.”
“My father protected your restitution account.”
“Your father believed criminals could repair themselves through paperwork.”
“And you believed an injured maid was easier to destroy than a ledger.”
Lucia did not deny it.
She claimed she never ordered Marco to strike me.
She told him to prevent me from entering the copper room.
Marco chose the method.
Again, separate instructions formed one crime while each person claimed responsibility for only a portion.
Carmine asked where Nicholas was.
Lucia looked toward the ceiling.
“He has been inside Bellgrave all evening.”
Every guard channel activated simultaneously.
A man spoke using Carmine’s voice.
“Security team, Lucia DeLuca is being held by an impostor. Restore command authority and enter the kitchen.”
Guards moved above us.
Some recognized the order as Carmine’s voice.
They did not know the real Carmine stood beneath the kitchen.
Gabriel contacted the independent gate team.
The estate’s internal force split immediately.
Half followed Marco’s earlier command to hold position.
The other half responded to the copied voice.
Carmine looked at Marco.
“For twenty years, you trained them to obey quickly.”
Marco lowered his face.
“I thought speed kept you alive.”
“Tonight it may kill the truth.”
Carmine did not arm himself.
He instructed Gabriel to transmit a challenge phrase known only to active guard captains.
The false Carmine answered correctly.
Nicholas had access to Marco’s training files.
Marco created a second test.
He asked about a scar Carmine received during a dock accident at nineteen.
The answer was wrong.
Several guards hesitated.
Not enough.
Heavy footsteps approached the kitchen.
Lucia reached for the ledger.
I placed my hand over it.
The signet ring on my finger gave me authority as witness protector, but only if employees honored the old family protocol.
Lucia held the second ring.
To frightened guards, both could appear legitimate.
Carmine looked toward me.
“The final page identifies where the records are released.”
“Do you want me to open it?”
He stared at the father’s ledger, then at the door above.
“Yes.”
I turned to the final page.
The restitution trust had not been stored under DeLuca control.
It belonged to Bellgrave Community Holdings, an irrevocable legal structure created by Lorenzo, Thomas, and Helen Hale.
Upon proven abuse of a protected witness, control shifted temporarily to the witness protector.
Me.
I now possessed authority over the estate’s legitimate security contracts, household employment accounts, and preservation systems.
Not the criminal organization.
The property.
The cameras.
The gates.
The salaries.
The digital command network.
I placed my finger on the emergency control panel.
The system recognized the ring and my identity.
Every internal guard credential deactivated.
The kitchen became silent.
Above us, footsteps stopped.
Lucia stared at me.
“You think servants can own a house because someone wrote it inside a trust?”
“No,” I said. “I think people can lose control when they use a house to hide abuse.”
The estate doors unlocked.
The cameras began uploading preserved footage to an outside server.
Then the security screen displayed a man standing in Carmine’s study.
He had Carmine’s face.
He wore the second signet ring.
Lucia’s hand was suddenly empty.
The ring she placed on the table had disappeared.

Someone inside the copper room had switched it without us noticing.
