Chapter 4 - THE ARCHIVE BEHIND THE SILVER LOCKET
The locket did not contain a hidden recording.
It contained numbers.
Tiny symbols were engraved beneath the photograph of Emilia and Camryn as children.
The sequence matched a code written inside Emilia’s final note.
Julian used it to locate a secure storage account registered through an attorney who died six months after Emilia.
The account required two forms of authorization.
The locket code was one.
Emilia’s old phone provided the other.
Matteo authorized the examiner to open the archive while federal agents traveled to the penthouse.
Adrian demanded to leave.
Julian advised him that he was not legally detained but warned that elevator security had been turned over to building authorities because of the attempted server intrusion.
Adrian called his lawyer.
Then he sat silently.
The archive contained photographs, account records, vehicle service messages, and letters Emilia had written but never sent.
One letter was addressed to Matteo.
You love Leo, but you keep choosing Adrian’s explanations over my fear.
He is moving money through Verona Relief, and the people receiving it are not refugees.
They are companies he controls.
I found records connecting him to the garage, the drivers, and the doctor who keeps telling you I am unstable.
I am taking Leo somewhere safe until you are willing to see what is happening inside your own house.
Matteo read the paragraph twice.
Verona Relief was a foundation Adrian created after an earthquake overseas.
It raised millions through DeLuca businesses.
Records showed most donations entered legitimate aid programs.
Several large transfers did not.
Money moved through consulting companies and returned to accounts used by Adrian.
Financial fraud alone did not prove murder.
The vehicle files created a more serious question.
Two days before Emilia died, Adrian ordered an unplanned service inspection of her car.
A mechanic reported that a safety component needed replacement.
Another message instructed him to release the vehicle without completing the work.
The mechanic answered:
Mr. Matteo will never approve this.
Adrian replied:
Matteo approved it through me.
Matteo had approved nothing.
The explosion was originally blamed on a fuel system failure after severe impact.
Investigators now needed to determine whether the skipped repair caused the failure or whether additional tampering occurred.
The evidence supported reopening the case.
It did not yet establish who intended Emilia to die.
Camryn touched Leo’s hair.
“She knew she was in danger.”
Matteo stared at the screen.
“And I told her to rest.”
He remembered Emilia standing beneath the penthouse windows with Leo in her arms.
She said Adrian was watching her.
Matteo called it grief and exhaustion.
He asked his brother to arrange another physician.
That physician increased Emilia’s medication.
The doctor later moved to Europe with financial support from Verona Relief.
Federal agents arrived with warrants connected to the attempted server access and the reopened financial investigation.
Adrian stood.
“You are giving our family to them.”
Matteo looked at him.
“You used our family to hide from them.”
“You built the system.”
“Yes.”
The admission silenced the room.
Matteo did not pretend fatherhood erased the business he controlled.
He had ordered threats.
Approved illegal collections.
Allowed men to use fear in his name.
He had never ordered Emilia’s death.
But he created the world in which Adrian believed evidence could disappear without anyone asking questions.
Matteo turned over the archive through counsel.
He also agreed to preserve company servers.
Adrian’s attorney advised him not to speak.
As agents approached, Adrian looked toward Camryn.
“You came here because you wanted money.”
Camryn did not move.
“I came because Leo was still alive.”
Adrian smiled coldly.
“For now.”
Matteo crossed the room so quickly that the agents stepped between them.
He did not strike his brother.
He looked over one agent’s shoulder.
“Say his name again as a threat, and the next person you speak to will be your attorney through reinforced glass.”
Adrian laughed, but fear had entered his eyes.
He was escorted from the penthouse for questioning related to evidence tampering and suspected financial crimes.
Leo watched the elevator close.
Then he whispered:
“Gone?”
Camryn tapped his back three times.
“For tonight.”
Matteo looked at her.
“You did not say forever.”
“I do not lie to frightened children.”
