Chapter 1 - THE MAID WHO REFUSED TO FLINCH

“Step away from my son.”

Matteo DeLuca’s roar crossed the marble living room like a gunshot.

Camryn Jenkins did not move.

She remained kneeling directly in front of three year old Leo DeLuca, close enough to see every tear clinging to his dark lashes.

The solid wooden train he had thrown at her lay beside her cleaning bucket.

Pain pulsed through her shoulder where the toy had struck, but she kept both hands open and visible.

Leo’s small fist remained raised toward her face.

His entire body trembled.

Behind him, warm sunset light poured through the floor to ceiling windows of the Tribeca penthouse. Manhattan glowed far below, beautiful and indifferent.

Several household servants stood frozen near the service corridor.

Nobody approached.

They had all seen what happened to adults who tried to restrain Leo.

Biting.

Kicking.

Screaming until he could no longer breathe.

Fourteen nannies had resigned in six months.

Matteo had begun to believe his son was unreachable.

Now a maid on her first day had placed herself directly in the path of his rage.

Matteo stormed forward in a tailored charcoal suit, his expression filled with protective fury.

Camryn slowly placed her white cleaning cloth on the marble between herself and Leo.

“No,” she said.

Matteo stopped.

Her refusal seemed to shock every person in the room.

Camryn never looked away from Leo.

“He needs someone to stop being afraid of him.”

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

“You do not know what he needs.”

“I know he expected me to run.”

Leo’s fist shook harder.

Camryn matched the rhythm of his breathing.

A slow inhale.

A careful exhale.

She did not tell him to calm down.

She did not call him bad.

She simply remained.

“You are angry,” she whispered. “Because everyone keeps leaving.”

Leo’s face cracked.

The fury did not disappear at once.

It collapsed inward.

Tears poured over his cheeks. His raised fist slowly opened, each small finger uncurling as though the movement hurt.

Camryn lowered her voice.

“You wanted somebody to see you before they disappeared.”

Leo looked toward the brass service elevator.

Then toward the framed photograph near the grand piano.

His mother, Emilia DeLuca, smiled from behind the glass.

She wore a silver locket around her neck.

Leo’s mouth opened in a silent cry.

He stepped toward Camryn.

Matteo lunged once, believing his son intended to strike her.

Instead, Leo climbed into her arms.

His small hands seized the gray fabric of her housekeeping uniform. He buried his face against her neck and released a sound so broken that Camryn closed her eyes.

She wrapped one arm around him.

Then she tapped his back three times.

Pause.

Three more taps.

Matteo stopped breathing.

Emilia had used that rhythm every night.

Three taps meant I am here.

Three more meant I am staying.

No therapist knew it.

No nanny had ever seen it.

Emilia had died before Leo could explain it.

Leo lifted his face and cupped Camryn’s cheeks between his hands.

Then he kissed her.

“Stay.”

The word was weak.

Almost air.

It was also the first word Matteo had heard his son speak in eleven months.

Every servant in the room gasped.

Matteo’s eyes became wet.

His fury vanished beneath something rawer.

Hope.

Grief.

Suspicion.

Camryn rocked Leo using the same precise rhythm.

A silver chain slipped from beneath her white collar.

The locket resting against her chest was identical to Emilia’s.

Matteo’s expression changed.

He stepped closer.

“Who taught you that rhythm?”

Camryn slowly raised her eyes.

Before she answered, the private elevator chimed.

The color disappeared from her face.

Brass doors began sliding apart.

A tall man in a black suit stood inside.

Adrian DeLuca.

Matteo’s younger brother.

Camryn tightened both arms around Leo.

Adrian saw the locket.

For one brief second, his polished expression failed.

“You,” he whispered.

Matteo turned toward him.

May you like

Camryn’s fear had revealed more than any answer could have.

Continue to the next part: Adrian recognizes Camryn immediately, forcing the maid to reveal why she entered the DeLuca home under a false identity.
