Chapter 7 - The Device Inside the Child

The steel barrier lifted after Samuel lost consciousness.

Evelyn placed the newborn on the floor beneath the emergency lights.

His skin had turned pale.

His heartbeat accelerated on the monitor.

Luca held Samuel’s remote.

There were no buttons.

Only a biometric sensor linked to his pulse.

If Samuel died, the device inside the baby would activate.

Victor searched the doctor’s medical bag.

No surgical records.

No implant model.

No instructions.

Evelyn examined the infant’s chest.

A tiny scar rested beneath his right arm.

“They placed it during delivery.”

“What does it do?” I asked.

“It may release medication. It may interrupt his heart. I do not know.”

Samuel opened his eyes.

“You need me alive.”

I knelt beside him.

“You need a reason to remain alive.”

“The vault opens, I disable the device.”

“You will disable it first.”

He smiled through blood.

“Then you kill me.”

“Yes.”

“That is why Luca never trusted you.”

Luca stood across from me holding his son.

The old wound between us opened again.

Samuel had built his entire plan around one certainty.

We would suspect each other faster than we trusted each other.

Mia approached Samuel.

“My brother is crying.”

He ignored her.

She knelt close.

“If he dies, Roman will kill you.”

Samuel looked at me.

“He will try.”

“No,” Mia said. “My dad will help him.”

Luca’s face changed.

She had not forgiven him.

Yet she still believed he would protect his brother.

The child was offering us the trust we had denied each other for twelve years.

Evelyn found a portable imaging scanner in Samuel’s bag. The implant appeared as a capsule near the baby’s rib.

A thin line connected it to a small cardiac lead.

Removing it without surgery could kill him.

Samuel said the deactivation code was stored inside the vault.

The children had to open it.

Mia refused again.

Luca held her shoulders.

“I will not force you.”

Samuel laughed.

“Then watch the boy die.”

Mrs. Harlow moved toward him.

She struck him across the face.

“You speak about children as though they are tools because no one ever loved you enough to make you human.”

Samuel’s smile disappeared.

She had found the wound beneath his arrogance.

Victor traced the implant signal.

It communicated through a transmitter hidden in the mansion.

If we destroyed the transmitter, the implant might lose connection.

Or trigger immediately.

Evelyn searched Samuel’s remote and found a secondary channel.

A countdown appeared.

Twenty six minutes.

The capsule would release when time reached zero.

Mia looked at the vault.

“What is inside?”

“Records,” I said. “Money. Names.”

“And the code?”

“Maybe.”

She walked toward the scanner.

Luca stopped her.

“You do not have to.”

“Yes.”

“No. I already used you once tonight.”

“I am not doing it for you.”

She looked at the baby.

“I am doing it for him.”

Evelyn placed the newborn beside the second reader.

Mia extended her hand.

I cut one of my fingers first and pressed it against the plate.

The system rejected me.

Descendant required.

Luca tried.

Rejected.

Only the children could open it.

Mia pressed her thumb against the reader.

The baby’s heel touched the second sensor.

The vault opened.

No gold waited inside.

No money.

The room contained servers, sealed ledgers, and hundreds of video recordings.

At the center stood a medical console.

Evelyn entered the implant number.

A deactivation option appeared.

It required one final code.

Samuel’s personal voiceprint.

I dragged him toward the console.

“Say it.”

“No.”

The countdown showed nineteen minutes.

Luca aimed at Samuel’s knee.

“Do not make Roman look patient.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“You still do not understand. The device is not only inside the baby.”

The medical console displayed two active implants.

One belonged to the newborn.

The other had been transmitting for seven years.

Mia.

Mrs. Harlow grabbed her.

The child touched the back of her neck.

A small scar hid beneath her hair.

Rose had told her it came from an accident when she was little.

Samuel smiled.

“If either child leaves without the council’s authorization, both implants activate.”

The vault doors began closing behind us.

Continue to the next part: Roman discovers Mia has carried a hidden device for most of her life, linking both children to Antonio’s surviving council.
