Chapter 5 - The Vault Beneath the Chapel

The mansion had independent generators designed to survive attacks.
Both failed simultaneously.
Only someone with internal access could disable them.
Victor distributed night vision equipment while I took Mia and Mrs. Harlow toward the chapel.
The underground garage door stood open.
Beyond it, the floor beneath the altar had separated into two stone panels.
A staircase descended into darkness.
My father had built a vault beneath the room where my mother prayed.
Mrs. Harlow crossed herself.
“I saw Antonio enter the chapel at night. I never knew where he went.”
Fresh blood marked the scanner beside the hidden stairs.
The newborn’s blood.
Evelyn had already opened the first lock.
We descended.
The vault entrance required a second authorization. A metal plate displayed two empty circles and one glowing light.
Victor examined it.
“Three blood confirmations.”
One had been accepted.
The other two remained empty.
My father’s voice played through an old speaker.
“To my surviving sons, the future belongs to the one who brings both branches of blood home.”
Luca and I.
Mia and the newborn.
The vault had been designed around descendants my father should not have known would exist.
Unless he planned them.
Mrs. Harlow noticed a narrow file slot beneath the scanner. Inside was a letter written in Antonio’s hand.
Roman and Luca,
One of you will inherit my name.
One of you will inherit my sins.
If you open this room together, you will learn which is which.
My father had turned even death into manipulation.
A movement sensor flashed inside the tunnel.
Someone was approaching from below.
Victor raised his weapon.
Evelyn emerged carrying the newborn.
She had changed into black medical clothing. Blood stained her shoulder.
Behind her stood Luca.
The left side of his face was scarred. One eye had clouded from heat damage. His left hand remained twisted close to his chest.
Yet he was alive.
For twelve years, I had imagined what I would say if death returned him.
No words survived the sight.
Mia moved first.
“Dad.”
Luca looked at her.
Guilt crossed his face.
She did not run to him.
“You left me.”
“I thought Rose was alive.”
“You did not check.”
“I could not risk being followed.”
“You watched me outside his house.”
Luca lowered his eyes.
The truth hit him harder because it came from a child.
Evelyn shifted the baby.
“We do not have time.”
I looked at her.
“You had twelve years.”
“You have no idea what was hunting us.”
“You could have told me.”
“We believed you were part of it.”
“Part of what?”
Evelyn nodded toward the vault.
“Antonio’s final network.”
My father had created a hidden financial system connecting politicians, judges, shipping companies, and criminal families. It contained accounts worth billions.
After his death, Luca discovered that many funds came from human trafficking, stolen pensions, and weapons shipments.
He intended to expose the network.
Antonio’s loyalists arranged the warehouse explosion.
Evelyn and Clara saved Luca.
Samuel later betrayed their clinic location.
Clara died.
Luca fled with infant Mia and Rose, Clara’s aunt.
“Why fake Evelyn’s death?” I asked.
“Because your men were searching for her.”
“I was searching to protect her.”
“You executed three people during that search.”
“They lied about where she was.”
“They were trying to keep her alive.”
Every action I believed was loyalty had looked like violence from the outside.
Evelyn continued.
The clinic retained my biological sample. Luca planned to use it to create a child capable of opening Antonio’s vault because my father had designed the lock around my bloodline.
But the sample had been compromised.
“What does that mean?”
Samuel had altered the storage labels.
The embryo was created from Luca’s sample, not mine.
The newborn was Mia’s brother.
My nephew.
“Why bring him to me?”
“The vault needs both branches,” Luca said. “Your blood and mine.”
I looked at the scanner.
It required descendants from both sons.
Mia and the baby could open it together.
Evelyn placed the infant near the reader.
Mia backed away.
“No.”
Luca spoke gently.
“This ends everything.”
“You always say that.”
“Mia.”
“You left me for him.”
“He is your brother.”
“So was Roman yours.”
Luca looked at me.
The child had cut through twelve years of excuses with one sentence.
A shot echoed from the stairs.
Evelyn jerked.
Blood spread across her side.
Samuel Vance stood above us holding a gun.
Behind him were six armed men wearing my own security insignia.
He smiled.

“Thank you for opening the first lock.”
Continue to the next part: Roman’s doctor reveals he has controlled both brothers for years and now intends to use Mia and the baby to open Antonio’s vault.
