Chapter 4

The shrill alarm from the heart monitor echoed through the trauma room.

"Continue compressions!"

"Charge to two hundred!"

"Clear!"

Sophie's small body jolted as the defibrillator discharged.

Mara stood frozen just outside the circle of doctors. Every instinct as a physician told her to step in, but every instinct as a mother kept her rooted in place, her hands trembling so violently she had to clasp them together.

"Come on, sweetheart," she whispered. "Come back to me."

After what felt like an eternity, a steady rhythm returned to the monitor.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

Dr. Raj Patel exhaled.

"We've got a pulse."

Relief washed over the room, but Mara knew they weren't finished.

Not even close.

Minutes later, two detectives from the Cleveland Police Department arrived.

One of the security officers handed them Sophie's damaged phone while another delivered a copy of the trauma room surveillance recording.

"The entire conversation was captured on video," he said.

Detective Lisa Morgan watched the footage in silence.

Daniel's whisper played clearly through the speakers.

"She isn't even your biological child, so this isn't your concern."

Then Mara's response.

"The day I adopted her was the day she became my daughter... and you just confessed inside my hospital."

Morgan paused the video.

She looked directly at Daniel.

"Would you like to explain why a thirteen-year-old has bruises matching your belt buckle?"

Daniel forced a laugh.

"Coincidence."

The detective reached into an evidence bag.

Inside was his black leather belt.

The square silver buckle reflected the fluorescent lights.

She placed a forensic measurement beside a photograph of the bruise.

Perfect match.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Then another discovery changed everything.

A forensic technician finished recovering deleted files from Sophie's phone.

"There are more recordings."

This time, they weren't only audio.

One short video began playing.

The camera shook violently, as though Sophie had hidden the phone inside her hoodie.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"You make one more mistake, and your mother will think you're the problem."

A loud crack followed.

Sophie cried out.

The video ended.

The room fell silent.

Even Daniel couldn't speak.

Detective Morgan slowly closed the file.

"That's enough."

She nodded toward the officers.

"Daniel Bennett, you're under arrest for felony child abuse, aggravated assault, intimidation of a minor, and obstruction of an investigation."

Daniel's face twisted with desperation.

He turned toward Mara.

"You can't let them do this! Tell them I didn't mean it!"

Mara stared at him with eyes that held no anger anymore.

Only disappointment.

"I spent fifteen years believing I knew the man I married."

She took a slow breath.

"But the man standing in front of me is a stranger."

The handcuffs clicked shut around Daniel's wrists.

As officers led him toward the exit, he glanced back one final time.

No one followed him.

No one defended him.

May you like

The trauma room doors closed behind him.

For the first time in years, Sophie was finally safe.
