Chapter 2

Mara slowly rolled Sophie's sleeve above her elbow.
The room seemed to fall silent.
Rows of bruises covered the inside of the girl's forearm—some yellowing with age, others fresh and deep purple. They overlapped one another in a grim timeline of pain that no accidental fall could explain.
Then Mara saw it.
A perfectly square bruise, sharply defined against Sophie's pale skin.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
She had seen that shape before.
Every morning when Daniel buckled his black leather belt before leaving for work.
Every evening when he hung it neatly inside their bedroom closet.
Her eyes drifted to his waist.
The square silver buckle caught the harsh hospital lights.
Exactly the same size.
Exactly the same shape.
Daniel noticed where she was looking.
For the first time that morning, his smile faded.
He stepped closer until only she could hear him.
His voice remained calm, almost bored.
"She isn't even your biological child, so this isn't your concern."
The words landed like a knife.
Mara stared at him, unable to believe the man she'd spent fifteen years beside had just admitted what kind of person he truly was.
Then something inside her changed.
The grief disappeared.
So did the confusion.
Only purpose remained.
Without responding to Daniel, she slowly lifted her eyes toward the security camera mounted high in the corner of the trauma room.
Its tiny red light blinked steadily.
Recording everything.
She spoke clearly enough for every doctor and nurse to hear.
"The day I adopted her was the day she became my daughter... and you just confessed inside my hospital."
The room fell completely silent.
Daniel turned toward the camera.
Only then did he realize what he had done.
His confidence cracked.
Just as Raj prepared Sophie for a CT scan, a young nurse hurried into the room, breathing hard.
"Dr. Bennett!"
She held up a damaged smartphone inside a clear evidence bag.
"The paramedics found this under the staircase. It belongs to Sophie."
The cracked screen flickered to life.
Despite the shattered glass, dozens of audio files remained visible.
Each one had the same beginning.
Recording...
Daniel lunged.
"Give me that!"
He moved faster than anyone expected.
But two hospital security officers had already entered after hearing Mara's raised voice.
They intercepted him instantly.
"Sir, don't move!"
Daniel struggled violently.
"You don't understand!"
One officer twisted his arms behind his back while the other pulled the phone safely away.
Raj stared at Daniel in disbelief.
"This isn't helping your case."
Daniel stopped fighting.
His breathing grew heavy.
For the first time, fear settled across his face.

Not fear for Sophie.
Fear of being exposed.
