Chapter 8 - Aunt Rebecca’s House

Rebecca Bennett lived inside a white colonial home surrounded by oak trees and security cameras.
Noah had spent holidays there. She helped him with school applications, attended his soccer games, and told him his mother was selfish for leaving.
Now Laura’s photograph placed Rebecca at the center of Haven’s earliest meeting.
Detective Shaw survived the auditorium lockdown and rescued the trapped parents. Principal Vance was declared a fugitive. Grant disappeared from police monitoring.
Laura remained in surgery.
Emma refused to wait.
“My mother is inside that van.”
Noah looked at Rebecca’s address on his phone.
“If Laura was right, my aunt knows where they are going.”
Ava and Mason drove them to the house.
Rebecca opened the door before they knocked.
She wore a dark blue suit and held no visible weapon.
“I wondered when Laura would tell you.”
Noah’s anger surprised even him.
“You told me she abandoned us.”
“She did.”
“She was protecting me.”
“Those are not opposites.”
Rebecca allowed them inside.
The living room walls displayed photographs of children Rebecca had represented in custody cases.
Some of the faces appeared in the storage unit files.
“You sent children into Haven homes,” Emma said.
“I removed them from dangerous parents.”
“You helped declare Sarah unstable.”
Rebecca poured water into a glass.
“Your mother entered private property, photographed confidential records, and endangered you during a reckless escape.”
“Grant caused the crash.”
“Grant followed instructions badly.”
The calmness of her admission chilled the room.
Noah moved closer.
“You founded Haven.”
“I created a legal network because the public system failed children every day.”
“Then powerful families started paying you.”
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“Funding kept the shelters open.”
“You erased mothers.”
“I removed obstacles.”
The phrase sounded exactly like Principal Vance.
Emma lifted her crutch.
“Where is Sarah?”
Rebecca looked toward the staircase.
“Alive.”
A floorboard creaked above them.
Grant appeared on the landing.
He held Sarah by the arm.
She was weak, but conscious.
Emma stopped breathing.
“Mom.”
Sarah pulled away from Grant.
He struck her across the face.
Emma lunged forward.
Noah caught her before she fell.
Rebecca raised one hand.
“Release Sarah.”
Grant laughed.
“You no longer give orders.”
Principal Vance entered from the dining room with Officer Dorsey.
Haven had fractured.
Rebecca wanted to preserve the network.
Vance wanted to destroy the evidence and disappear.
Grant wanted money.
Dorsey wanted protection.
Each believed the others were expendable.
Sarah looked at Emma.
“The ledger is inside your prosthetic leg.”
Emma stared down.
“What?”
Sarah explained that after the crash, Thomas Bennett arranged her surgery. Laura hid a memory chip inside the first prosthetic socket before Haven could search Emma’s belongings.
When the leg was replaced six months later, Sarah secretly moved the chip into the new frame during one of Emma’s clinic appointments.
“I never saw you.”
“You were sedated.”
Noah looked toward Emma’s temporary support.
Her damaged prosthetic leg remained at County General.
Grant understood at the same moment.
“The hospital.”
Principal Vance aimed his pistol at him.
“You said the photographs were the only evidence.”
“I did not know.”
Rebecca moved between them.
“No one is going anywhere until the children are released.”
Vance laughed.
“You are still pretending this was about children.”
Dorsey grabbed Rebecca from behind.
Grant dragged Sarah toward the rear door.
Noah threw a glass lamp into the security panel.
The house alarms activated.
Ava opened the front door and screamed toward the neighbors.
“Call the police!”
Vance fired into the ceiling.
Everyone froze.
Emma lifted her crutch and struck Grant’s knee.
He released Sarah.
Noah tackled Dorsey.
Mason pulled Rebecca away.
Sarah crawled toward Emma.
Mother and daughter reached each other in the center of the room.
Emma touched Sarah’s face.
“You came back.”
“I never stopped trying.”
Police sirens approached.
Principal Vance retreated into the kitchen.
Grant followed.
Dorsey escaped through a window.
Rebecca remained on the floor, staring at Noah.
“You do not understand what releasing that ledger will do.”
“It will show what you did.”
“It will expose children whose new families do not know they were transferred illegally.”
Sarah held Emma.
“Truth does not become cruelty because you delayed it.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Detective Shaw entered with armed officers.
She arrested Rebecca.
Noah thought the nightmare might finally be ending.
Then his phone rang.
County General.
A nurse spoke quickly.
“Someone entered the prosthetic lab using your father’s identification.”
“Who?”
The security image arrived.
Thomas Bennett, still wearing a hospital gown beneath a stolen coat, carried Emma’s damaged prosthetic leg through the parking garage.

Beside him walked Principal Vance.
Continue to the next part: Noah’s injured father has taken the ledger, but nobody knows whether he is helping Haven or leading Vance into a trap.
