Chapter 6 - The Witness in the Principal’s Office
Noah refused to believe Laura had ordered Tyler to push Emma.
He had just seen his mother warning him about Haven.
Principal Vance wanted them confused.
That was how the network survived.
It did not need perfect lies.
It only needed every victim to doubt the person beside them.
Detective Shaw arrived at the storage facility after Mason anonymously reported a break in.
She entered with her weapon lowered.
“I know you have been hiding information.”
Noah stood in front of the computer.
“How did you find us?”
“The facility manager called the police.”
“There is no manager.”
Her eyes shifted toward the empty office outside.
Emma noticed.
“You knew about this place.”
Shaw slowly closed the unit door.
“My sister is on that wall.”
She pointed toward a photograph of a young social worker named Natalie Shaw.
Natalie disappeared seven years earlier after investigating false foster placements.
Caroline joined the police department to find her.
For years, she had secretly collected evidence against Haven.
“Why did you not tell us?”
“Because Thomas Bennett warned me that Principal Vance had officers inside my unit.”
Noah showed her the photograph of Lily Carter.
Detective Shaw recognized the room.
“The school administrative basement.”
Emma balanced on her crutches.
“We have to get her out.”
“The school is under police control.”
“Police controlled by whom?”
Shaw did not answer.
They returned to Westbridge High through an old maintenance tunnel shown on the storage unit blueprints.
The passage opened beneath the auditorium.
Above them, Principal Vance had called an emergency parent meeting to discuss the hallway attack.
He stood on the stage telling families that Emma suffered from emotional problems related to her disability.
Grant had been released after prosecutors claimed the photographs did not prove he committed a crime.
He sat beside the principal.
Tyler stood near the curtain, staring at the floor.
Noah watched from the backstage door.
“They are changing the story.”
Emma’s hands tightened around her crutches.
“Then we change it back.”
Ava and Mason connected the storage computer to the auditorium projection system.
As Principal Vance described Emma as confused, Sarah’s recorded testimony appeared on the screen behind him.
Parents gasped.
Grant turned.
Vance shouted for security to shut it off.
Mason switched to the photograph of Grant beside the wrecked car.
Then the image of Sarah in the basement.
Then the files showing Haven’s false psychiatric orders.
The auditorium erupted.
Detective Shaw entered from the side aisle with two trusted officers.
“Richard Vance, do not move.”
Vance grabbed Tyler and pulled him in front of his body.
His own son froze.
“Dad?”
“Stay quiet.”
Tyler looked toward Emma.
For the first time, he did not appear cruel.
He appeared terrified.
“I did not mean for you to fall,” he said.
“You pushed me.”
“He told me to get the backpack.”
Vance tightened his grip on Tyler’s shoulder.
“Stop talking.”
Tyler continued.
“He said if I did not, he would send my sister back to Saint Matthew.”
The second girl.
Tyler had a younger sister nobody at school had seen for more than a year.
Principal Vance told everyone she attended a private academy.
She was inside Haven’s clinic.
The lights in the auditorium went out.
Emergency locks sealed the exits.
A recorded alarm announced an armed intruder inside the school.
Parents screamed.
Vance dragged Tyler through the curtain.
Noah and Emma followed.
Detective Shaw shouted for them to stop, but the stage doors locked between them.
Behind the curtain, a freight elevator stood open.
Vance pulled Tyler inside.
Emma placed one crutch between the doors before they closed.
Noah squeezed through with her.
The elevator descended beneath the school.
Vance aimed a pistol at them.
“You have no idea how many families need Haven.”
“You mean how many powerful people need you,” Emma said.
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened onto a medical corridor hidden beneath the school.
Lily Carter sat inside a glass office.
Beside her was Tyler’s younger sister.
A woman stood behind them.
Laura Bennett.
Noah stared at his mother.
She did not look surprised to see him.
“Close the elevator,” she told Vance.
Noah’s voice broke.
“Mom?”
Laura lifted a gun and aimed directly at Emma.

“I am sorry,” she said. “But Sarah was never supposed to let her daughter see the photographs.”
