Chapter 7 - THE MESSAGE ELIJAH NEVER RECEIVED
Elijah’s signature had been copied from a routine hospital consent form.
Sloane attached it to an experimental medication authorization after Toby was discharged.
The first dose had not been intended to poison him.
Julian wanted to confirm that Claire’s son carried the same neurological marker discovered in her research.
Toby became a test subject because of his mother.
Claire had developed an early version of the compound for adult trauma patients.
She abandoned it after discovering the memory effects.
Julian and Sloane continued the work without her.
They believed Toby’s genetic response could help stabilize the formula.
His first hospitalization produced valuable data.
The later doses were not research alone.
They were control.
Claire had suspected something before her death.
Investigators recovered an email from an offline company archive.
She sent it to Elijah twelve hours before her crash.
TOBY WAS GIVEN AN UNAPPROVED COMPOUND.
JULIAN IS USING YOUR SIGNATURE.
DO NOT TRUST THE INTERNAL REVIEW.
CALL NAOMI WHEELER AT LAKEVIEW. SHE REPORTED THE SAME DRUG.
Elijah never received it.
Julian’s office intercepted every message containing Northstar trial codes.
Claire’s email had been marked as malicious and deleted.
The original remained in a compliance backup no one reviewed.
Elijah sat inside the hospital chapel with the printed message in his hands.
“She told me exactly what to do.”
“Yes.”
“I let Julian’s system decide what reached me.”
“Yes.”
“And when you told me the financial records were false, I trusted the same system again.”
“Yes.”
He looked toward me.
“Why are you not angrier?”
“I am.”
“You do not sound like it.”
“My anger does not need to perform for you.”
The answer silenced him.
He had spent months believing calm meant manipulation.
Now he understood that restraint could contain more truth than accusation.
Cassandra requested an interview.
Her attorney believed cooperation might reduce the charges.
Detective Ortiz allowed me and Elijah to observe through glass.
Cassandra admitted giving Toby the medicine.
She admitted hiding the bottle inside her handbag because Julian ordered her to keep the drug available.
She admitted placing forged bank records where she knew Elijah’s investigators would find them.
“Did you believe Naomi stole the money?” Ortiz asked.
“At first.”
“When did you learn the truth?”
“Before the divorce hearing.”
“You still testified against her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Cassandra looked toward the glass.
“I wanted Elijah.”
“Did you love him?”
“I loved what being beside him made people see.”
The honesty contained no redemption.
“What did Julian promise?”
“That I would marry Elijah and control Claire’s trust.”
“Did you know the drug could kill Toby?”
“He said the first doses were safe.”
“And the final dose?”
Cassandra began crying.
“He said Toby would sleep for one night. Then the court would believe Elijah’s household was medically unsafe.”
“Why was the bottle in your bag?”
“I planned to give the reversal medicine afterward.”
“What reversal medicine?”
Cassandra described a second liquid Julian provided.
The laboratory tested residue from a small perfume atomizer inside her handbag.
It contained a weak stimulant.
Not the antidote.
Julian expected her to administer it after Toby collapsed and believe she had saved him.
If Toby died, Cassandra would carry the physical evidence and appear responsible.
Julian had prepared to erase her too.
“Who killed Claire?” Elijah asked through the intercom.
Cassandra looked toward him.
“I did not.”
“Who?”
“Julian told me her car accident was necessary.”
“Did Sloane help?”
“Yes.”
“What did they do?”
“They altered the electronic steering system through Sherman’s vehicle software.”
Elijah’s company had installed the prototype.
Claire’s car accelerated into a barrier during heavy rain.
Julian classified the software log as corrupted.
Sloane signed the medical report describing death on impact.
The autopsy showed Claire survived for seventeen minutes.
Emergency responders reached her vehicle within eight.
A private Sherman security officer told them hazardous battery material prevented immediate extraction.
Julian had delayed rescue long enough to remove Claire’s phone and research drive.
Elijah left the interview room.
He became sick inside the corridor.
I remained several feet away.
He did not ask me to comfort him.
Afterward, he returned to Toby’s bedside and told his son the truth in language a four year old could understand.
“Your mother Claire tried to protect you. Some adults hurt her because she told the truth.”
“Did you save her?”
“No.”
Toby touched his father’s hand.
“Did you come?”
“Too late.”
The child looked toward me.
“Nomi came.”
“Yes.”
Elijah’s voice broke.
“She did.”
Sherman Biomedical’s board issued a statement blaming Julian and Sloane.
Elijah rejected it.
He called a press conference from the hospital.
“My company purchased Northstar without examining the evidence hidden inside it. My executives used systems I controlled to harm children, forge medical approvals, destroy my marriage, and kill Claire Sherman.”
His attorneys attempted to stop him.
He continued.
“I did not order these crimes. I benefited from an organization that made questioning me difficult and questioning my deputies dangerous. That failure belongs in the public record.”
The stock price collapsed before he finished speaking.
Federal regulators froze company assets.
Hospitals canceled contracts.
Employees feared losing jobs.
Elijah surrendered control to an independent administrator.
Julian’s final protection disappeared.
He requested a deal.
He offered the names of every family who paid to use NX Seventeen on a child.
The list contained forty six names.
One was connected to the hospital where I currently worked.
Dr. Martin Sloane had not been acting alone inside the medical system.
The chief executive of our hospital had funded the first trial death settlement.
