Chapter 5 - THE CHILDREN IN THE BLUE ROOMS

Federal agents evacuated the secret clinic.

The children were transported to hospitals under independent supervision.

Mia Flores remained frightened of every cup of medicine offered to her.

Her mother, Sofia, arrived crying and asked why no one had contacted her.

Northstar had told her that Mia was attending a residential anxiety program through a scholarship.

Sofia signed consent forms.

None mentioned NX Seventeen.

The clinic charged the Sherman Foundation for treatment while using the children as trial subjects.

Mia had received the drug for fourteen months.

She experienced memory gaps, headaches, and breathing episodes.

Her mother was told the symptoms proved the treatment was necessary.

Toby had been brought there because Cassandra could not locate Claire’s complete archive.

Julian believed the lullaby contained the location of every copied trial record.

He used NX Seventeen to make Toby repeat memories without retaining the questioning.

The drug was not a truth serum.

It made frightened children easier to manipulate because they could not remember which answers had caused pain.

My medical complaint had described exactly that risk.

Sloane had taken my warning and converted it into an operating method.

I stood outside Toby’s room reading the recovered files.

Elijah joined me.

He had removed his wet coat. His black shirt was wrinkled. He looked like a man who had aged years since entering the hospital.

“Julian wants me to transfer control before he gives us the antidote.”

“He may not give it afterward.”

“I know.”

“What does the emergency board control?”

“Every laboratory, patent, trust proxy, and private archive.”

“He wants the evidence.”

“And the company.”

The purchase of Northstar three months earlier had been Julian’s idea.

He presented it as a distressed acquisition with valuable neurological patents.

Elijah approved the deal after reviewing a summary prepared by Julian’s office.

The purchase moved the secret trial, liabilities, and physical archives under Sherman Biomedical.

Julian then used company funds to keep the illegal clinics operating.

If the truth emerged, Elijah would appear responsible.

The scandal would force his resignation.

Toby’s poisoning created a second route.

Claire’s trust gave eighteen percent of company voting rights to her son.

If Elijah became unavailable, Cassandra would exercise the proxy as alternate guardian.

Cassandra had signed a private agreement granting Julian control over her votes.

“How did Naomi’s divorce help?” Ortiz asked.

Julian had answered through the phone.

“Dr. Wheeler recognized the symptoms five years ago. As long as she lived with Toby, she would recognize them again.”

He created the offshore account and transferred foundation money through it.

Cassandra found the records exactly where Julian instructed her to look.

Elijah’s own investigators reported to Julian.

Every verification returned the answer he had prepared.

I looked at Elijah.

“You believed the system because you owned it.”

“Yes.”

“You did not believe me.”

“No.”

He did not add excuses.

The accuracy hurt more cleanly than explanation.

Julian called again at 4:47 in the morning.

Toby’s heart rhythm was becoming unstable.

We needed the enzyme soon.

Elijah agreed to the transfer.

His attorneys prepared the documents.

Federal investigators inserted language delaying legal effect until identity verification completed.

Julian demanded a live biometric signature.

Elijah gave it.

The transfer confirmation appeared on Julian’s device.

He sent coordinates to a parking structure near Lake Michigan.

One person could collect the antidote.

Naomi Wheeler.

“He wants you outside the hospital,” Elijah said.

“He wants the doctor capable of identifying the vial away from Toby.”

“You are not going.”

“I am not leaving without a controlled plan.”

Ortiz arranged a tactical exchange.

I wore a concealed transmitter.

An agent who resembled me approached the vehicle first while I remained inside an armored van.

Julian recognized the decoy immediately.

He fired through the windshield and attempted to escape.

Agents blocked both exits.

He drove into a concrete barrier, abandoned the car, and entered the stairwell carrying a refrigerated case.

The pursuit ended on the roof.

Julian held the case over the edge.

“One step and the child loses his only dose.”

Mara, the federal tactical commander, kept her weapon lowered.

“The company transfer is invalid.”

Julian smiled.

“I expected that.”

“Then why arrange it?”

“To record Elijah accepting responsibility for Northstar.”

He intended to present the signature as proof that Elijah knowingly controlled the program.

The corporate seizure was useful.

The confession was more valuable.

I spoke through the stairwell doorway.

“You do not have an antidote.”

Julian looked toward me.

“You should be with your patient.”

“The case temperature is wrong.”

His expression changed.

Claire’s enzyme required deep freezing.

The portable case display showed ordinary refrigeration.

“What is inside?” I asked.

“Enough to make you cooperate.”

“You are carrying a decoy.”

He opened the case.

One glass vial rested inside.

Its label carried Toby’s name.

Not an antidote.

Another concentrated dose of NX Seventeen.

Julian had never intended to save him.

Agents moved when his attention shifted.

The case fell.

I caught it against the concrete before it slid over the edge.

Julian was restrained.

Ortiz searched his coat.

A brass freezer key was inside the lining.

Cassandra recognized it.

The real enzyme had never left the Lakeshore archive.

Julian had hidden it inside Claire’s private laboratory vault.

Federal agents returned with the key.

They found one frozen vial.

The glass was cracked.

Only a small amount remained.

The formula required a full dose.

Administering less might fail.

Administering the damaged sample might introduce contamination directly into Toby’s bloodstream.

Fiona called from the hospital.

“He is crashing again.”

I held the cracked vial beneath the parking structure light.

May you like

It was the only chance Claire had left for her son.

Continue to the next part: Naomi must decide whether to inject Toby with a damaged experimental antidote that could save him or stop his heart.
