Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Already Knew

Thomas Greer’s report was thirty six pages.

Celeste’s attorney claimed it was private security research.

Adrian’s counsel obtained it because Celeste had used Vale Foundation resources to verify one part of the investigation.

The report began with:

SUBJECT: ROSALIE MERCER BENNETT DESCENDANTS.

Not me.

Rose.

Then:

Elena Bennett.

Lucia Bennett.

Birth date.

School.

Dance studio.

Adoption noted but sealed.

Photographs.

One image showed Lucia leaving class holding my hand.

I had never seen Greer.

He had been across street.

My skin crawled.

The report concluded:

Possible connection between Lucia Bennett and deceased Amelia Claire Vale based on birth date, Rosalie Bennett relationship, and undisclosed adoption history. No biological evidence available.

Celeste received this four months before gala.

Why did she not tell Adrian?

Her first explanation:

“It was nonsense.”

Then why pay thirty thousand dollars?

No answer.

Then Samuel Whitaker, the orchestra conductor, called me.

His voice was apologetic.

“Ms. Bennett, I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

“Celeste asked me about Two Stars at Dusk three weeks before gala.”

I gripped desk.

“What exactly?”

“She hummed opening phrase.”

“You recognized?”

“Yes. Mrs. Mercer wrote it decades ago.”

“Did she ask about choreography?”

A pause.

“She asked whether I remembered something called the falling star.”

My stomach dropped.

“What did you say?”

“I said I had seen it once, at Amelia Vale’s memorial performance.”

“Who danced then?”

“A principal dancer Claire had coached privately. It was a tribute.”

“And Celeste?”

“She asked if a child could know sequence from anywhere public.”

“What did you tell?”

“No.”

There.

Celeste knew the dance mattered before she challenged Lucia.

Then event staffing records.

Beacon Event Staffing had not originally been scheduled for the gala.

Four days before event, Celeste’s assistant requested a Providence team substitution.

The roster was attached.

My name.

Elena Bennett.

Celeste intentionally brought me into that ballroom.

Maybe she did not know Lucia would come.

But when she saw my daughter?

She tested her.

Not a spontaneous cruelty alone.

An experiment.

Adrian confronted her through counsel.

“Why?”

Her answer:

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

“A woman who might use a child to access your fortune.”

I had never contacted him.

Not once.

Then:

“Why humiliate Lucia?”

“I was joking.”

The video made that lie embarrassing.

Then another discovery.

Celeste’s father, Arthur Winthrop, had been financial adviser to Charles Vale.

Winthrop Advisory processed Mercer Arts Foundation vendor payments during the exact period Rose was accused.

Old records showed the missing $240,000 had gone to North Beacon Cultural Consulting.

North Beacon was owned by Arthur’s father.

Money later moved into an account benefiting Charles Vale.

Rose received nothing.

My mother had been framed.

I sat in Daniel’s office staring at the ledger.

All those years.

Rose selling costumes.

Skipping doctor appointments.

Working until midnight.

While the family that destroyed her reputation remained wealthy.

Nora whispered:

“She was telling truth.”

“Yes.”

Then Daniel turned another page.

Winthrop Advisory had continued servicing Vale Foundation for decades.

Claire’s letters suggested she discovered questionable related-party fees.

If Amelia were alive, a descendant subtrust required independent historical review of certain foundation transactions.

Lucia’s existence did not just bring Adrian’s daughter back.

It reopened books powerful people wanted closed.

Then we learned something worse.

Celeste had not first discovered Rose four months ago.

A visitor record from Rose’s building showed:

Celeste Winthrop.

Two years earlier.

Three months before Rose died.

My mother had met her.

Nobody told me.

Then bank records from Celeste’s family office showed a cashier’s check requested the same day.

Payee:

Rose Bennett.

Amount:

$2,000,000.

The check was canceled the next morning.

Why would Celeste offer my dying mother two million dollars?

A lawyer found an old email.

Celeste to counsel:

If Bennett refuses NDA, what exposure exists if adoption paperwork is defective?

My hands began shaking.

She knew Lucia’s adoption could be challenged.

She knew before the gala.

May you like

She had known before Rose died.

And Rose had refused whatever Celeste wanted.
