Chapter 4

Anna carefully held the small package.

It wasn't much larger than her hand.

Wrapped in cream-colored paper.

Sealed with dark blue wax.

Across the front, Emily's handwriting remained as elegant as ever.

"Open this only after you've met Daniel."

Neither of them spoke.

The nurse quietly excused herself, leaving them alone in the fading evening light.

For a long moment...

Daniel simply stared at the package.

"She planned this..."

he whispered.

Anna nodded.

"I think she always believed we'd meet."

With trembling fingers, Anna broke the wax seal.

Inside were three things.

A folded letter.

A small silver key.

And an old photograph.

Anna picked up the photograph first.

Her breath caught.

It showed Emily standing in the hospital room shortly before her surgery.

She was pale.

Thin.

But smiling.

One hand rested gently over her chest.

The other pointed directly toward the camera.

On the back, Emily had written:

"Don't remember me like I was dying. Remember me because I was still choosing love."

Daniel closed his eyes.

That was Emily.

Even at the end...

She refused to let death be the center of her story.

Anna unfolded the letter.

Daniel sat beside her.

Together, they began reading.

Dear Anna and Daniel,

If you're reading this together...

Then my impossible wish came true.

Thank you.

Both of you.

Daniel smiled sadly.

"She always liked impossible wishes."

Anna nodded.

"And somehow..."

"She kept making them come true."

The letter continued.

Daniel...

I know you.

You're probably carrying guilt that doesn't belong to you.

You think smiling again means forgetting me.

It doesn't.

Love isn't replaced.

It simply grows.

Daniel lowered his head.

For two years...

Every time he laughed...

He felt guilty.

Every peaceful day felt like a betrayal.

Emily had known.

The letter shifted.

Anna...

If you've spent these years wondering whether you're worthy of this heart...

Please stop.

You don't have to earn a gift.

You only have to use it well.

Anna wiped away fresh tears.

"I've spent every birthday asking why I survived."

Daniel gently squeezed her hand.

Emily had answered the question years ago.

Then they reached the final page.

Emily's handwriting became noticeably weaker.

But every word remained steady.

Inside this package is a key.

It opens a safety deposit box at the hospital.

There's only one thing inside.

I asked them not to release it until this day.

Daniel frowned.

"A safety deposit box?"

Anna picked up the silver key.

A tiny number was engraved into it.

214.

The next morning...

The hospital administrator escorted them to the basement archive.

At the end of a narrow hallway stood dozens of small metal deposit boxes.

She inserted the master key.

Anna slid in Emily's silver key.

Click.

The door slowly opened.

Inside...

There was no jewelry.

No money.

No legal documents.

Only a single video recorder.

And another envelope.

Daniel looked confused.

"A video?"

The administrator smiled softly.

"Emily recorded it the day before her surgery."

"She asked us to keep it sealed until both of you were together."

Minutes later...

They sat in a private conference room.

Daniel pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Emily appeared.

She looked weaker than in the photographs.

But her smile hadn't changed.

"Hi."

"If you're seeing this..."

"I guess I won my bet."

Daniel laughed through tears.

"You always did."

Emily leaned closer to the camera.

"I have one last favor."

She paused.

Then smiled mischievously.

"No..."

"I'm not going to ask you two to fall in love."

Daniel and Anna looked at each other awkwardly.

Emily laughed.

"I knew you'd both make that face."

Even now...

She could still make Daniel smile.

Her expression softened.

"My last wish isn't about romance."

"It's about purpose."

She looked directly into the camera.

"I've spent enough time in hospitals to know something."

"There are too many people waiting."

"Waiting for organs."

"Waiting for hope."

"Waiting for someone they will never meet."

She took a slow breath.

"So..."

"If the two of you ever become friends..."

"If life ever brings you to the same place..."

"Promise me you'll give those people hope."

The video ended with one final sentence.

"Don't let my heart be the only life it saves."

The screen went black.

Daniel sat in silence.

Anna slowly turned toward him.

"I think..."

"...she just gave us one final mission."

Daniel nodded.

For the first time since Emily's death...

He knew exactly what he needed to do.

May you like

And neither of them realized...

That Emily's final wish would soon grow into something far bigger than either could imagine.
