Chapter 2

Daniel stood motionless in the hospital garden.
The world around him faded into silence.
Children's laughter.
Birdsong.
The fountain.
Everything disappeared.
All he could hear was the pounding in his own chest as he unfolded Emily's letter.
The paper was worn.
The edges slightly yellow.
She had written it knowing she would never be there to see him read it.
His hands trembled.
He took a slow breath.
Then began.
My dearest Daniel,
If you're reading this...
Then something extraordinary has happened.
You found the person carrying my heart.
Daniel closed his eyes.
A tear slid down his cheek.
Even after two years...
Reading her words felt as if she were standing beside him.
The woman waited quietly a few steps away.
She didn't want to intrude.
But she couldn't bring herself to leave.
For years, she had wondered who had saved her life.
Now...
She was watching the man who had lost everything so she could live.
Daniel continued reading.
First...
Please don't cry.
I know you're ignoring that sentence already.
Despite everything...
Daniel let out a broken laugh.
Emily always knew him too well.
You once told me that love isn't measured by how long people stay.
It's measured by what they leave behind.
Well...
I'm leaving you something that still refuses to stop beating.
Daniel instinctively looked toward the young woman.
She lowered her eyes.
Almost embarrassed.
As though apologizing for being alive.
Emily's words continued.
If you're looking at her...
Please don't feel guilty.
Every heartbeat you hear isn't taking me away from you.
It's proof that a part of me is still helping someone smile.
Daniel's vision blurred.
For two years...
He had avoided asking who received Emily's heart.
He convinced himself it didn't matter.
The truth was much simpler.
He had been afraid.
Afraid that seeing another person alive because of Emily...
Would somehow make losing her feel real.
The woman finally spoke.
"My name is Anna."
Daniel looked up.
She smiled nervously.
"I've wanted to thank the donor's family every single day."
"I just never knew who you were."
Daniel managed a faint smile.
"Daniel."
There was an awkward silence.
Then Anna quietly said,
"I think..."
"...your wife saved my life twice."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Anna slowly rolled up the sleeve of her cardigan.
A thin surgical scar stretched across her chest.
"I was dying."
"I had less than a week."
"The doctors told me to prepare my family."
She looked down at the scar.
"Then they called in the middle of the night."
"'We found a heart.'"
"They said it was a perfect match."
She smiled sadly.
"I woke up with someone else's miracle inside me."
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
Emily never got to see another sunrise.
Because hers had become Anna's.
Anna reached into her purse again.
"This isn't the only thing the hospital gave me."
She pulled out a small notebook.
Every page was filled with handwriting.
"I started writing letters."
Daniel looked confused.
"Letters?"
"To your wife."
"I knew she'd never read them."
"But I wanted her to know..."
"...that her gift wasn't wasted."
She handed him the notebook.
The first page read:
"Dear Stranger,
Today I watched my little niece graduate from kindergarten.
I only saw it because of you."
Daniel swallowed hard.
He turned another page.
"Today I climbed a mountain.
Your heart beat the entire way."
Another.
"Today I laughed until I cried."
Another.
"Today I turned thirty."
Another.
Thank you for every ordinary day that became extraordinary because you shared your life with me.
Daniel couldn't stop crying.
Emily would have loved these letters.
She had always believed that ordinary moments were life's greatest treasures.
As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon...
Daniel unfolded the second half of Emily's letter.
Her handwriting grew smaller.
As though she had struggled to finish.
The final paragraph was underlined.
He began reading aloud without realizing it.
"If you ever meet the person carrying my heart..."
Anna looked at him.
So did every emotion he had buried for two years.
He continued, his voice breaking.
"...please don't spend the rest of your life alone."
The words echoed through the quiet garden.
Daniel couldn't read any further.
He broke down completely.
Anna instinctively stepped closer.
She gently took his trembling hand.
Not to replace Emily.
Not to erase his grief.
Simply...
To keep another human being from falling apart.
Daniel looked at her.
Then at the letter.
Only then did he notice there was one final page folded behind it.
Unlike the others...
It wasn't addressed to him.
Across the top, Emily had written:
"To the woman who now carries my heart."
Daniel and Anna looked at each other in stunned silence.
May you like
Neither of them had expected...
That Emily had left a letter for both of them.
