Chapter 3 - The Real Reason Emily Was ChosenVanessa refused to speak.
Daniel dismissed the guests into the ballroom but asked immediate family and several witnesses to remain.
Emily stood quietly near the staircase.
She wanted to leave.
Instead, Daniel asked her to stay.
“You deserve to hear this.”
Vanessa finally broke the silence.
“She wasn't supposed to work here.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She should have been gone months ago.”
Margaret looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa pointed toward Emily.
“She keeps reminding everyone of him.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Him?”
“Our father.”
The room froze.
Emily stared in confusion.
Margaret slowly sat down.
“You knew?”
Vanessa nodded.
“I found the old letters.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Do you know who your father was?”
Emily swallowed.
“My mother never told me.”
Vanessa smiled cruelly.
“She didn't have to.”
She opened her phone.
An old photograph appeared.
A much younger Richard Langford stood beside a smiling woman.
Emily's mother.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Daniel took the phone.
His face lost all color.
“This picture...”
Vanessa continued.
“She worked here thirty years ago.”
Emily felt dizzy.
“My mother?”
“She left before anyone learned she was pregnant.”
Daniel looked toward Emily.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty six.”
He silently calculated the dates.
Everything fit.
Margaret whispered,
“Richard...”
Emily stepped backward.
“No.”
“This can't be true.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“If Emily stayed here long enough, someone would notice.”
“So you framed her?”
“I protected this family.”
Daniel stared at his wife.
“No.”
“You protected yourself.”
Emily felt her knees weaken.
Everything she believed about her life suddenly became uncertain.
Her mother had spent years refusing to answer questions about her father.
Now, standing inside the Langford mansion, surrounded by strangers...
She realized she might not be a stranger at all.
Daniel quietly looked at Emily.
“We need DNA testing.”
Emily shook her head.
“I don't want your money.”
“No one said you did.”
“I only wanted my job.”
