Chapter 13 - Temporary Is Enough

The phrase temporary is enough changed the legal theory.
Nobody needed Ronan dead.
They needed him unable to act during a narrow closing window.
The Vance financing commitment expired forty eight hours after Palmer.
If Ronan remained conscious and active, he could block the transfer.
If hospitalized, August could attempt emergency authority.
Adrian Vale understood that.
Elias understood it.
Did August?
His audio showed he wanted Ronan to sign.
His messages after the attack showed anger at escalation.
No evidence yet showed he knew Adrian planned physical incapacity.
That distinction remained.
Malcolm denied knowing.
Cordelia likely did not know details either.
She had followed her father expecting a secret meeting.
Instead, she walked into a corporate coercion operation involving multiple adults with overlapping plans.
Then made her own bad decisions afterward.
No single mastermind.
A network of people each willing to cross one line.
Together they almost killed someone.
That was more realistic and more frightening.
Jonathan Vale’s role now mattered again.
His brother Adrian arranged the temporary incapacity instruction.
Jonathan later processed Della’s false withdrawal.
Was he protecting his brother?
Likely.
Could it be proved?
His old email archive answered.
Adrian:
Girl saw Cordelia.
Jonathan:
I will clean witness side.
Adrian:
No direct threats.
Jonathan:
Elias already moved.
Jonathan knew Elias threatened Della.
He still created paperwork afterward.
The legal cover was deliberate.
Ronan’s lawyers referred evidence to authorities.
Professional conduct review followed.
Jonathan resigned from Vance Capital pending investigation.
Malcolm publicly announced independent governance review.
The Vance family did not collapse by morning.
But control changed.
Banks paused new financing.
Board members demanded disclosure.
Cordelia stopped appearing at society events.
The image of invulnerability cracked like the hotel mirror.
Della cared less about their social fall than she expected.
Her real concern was simpler.
Someone had entered her apartment.
Someone knew her pregnancy.
Someone had searched old records.
Police had not identified the burglar.
Then fingerprint results returned from her apartment window frame.
Partial match.
Former employee of Alder East Consulting.
Name:
Michael Renn.
Alive.
Currently employed by a private investigations firm.
Police interviewed him.
Renn admitted entering the building.
Denied entering Della’s apartment.
Then confronted with camera timing.
He asked for counsel.
Later, through agreement, he admitted Jonathan Vale hired him to retrieve “historical Vance materials.”
He was told Della possessed property stolen from a client.
The cardboard box.
Vale wanted anything from Palmer.
Renn took it.
Where was the box?
Delivered to Vale’s office.
Police had already searched there under warrant.
No box.
Vale claimed Renn never delivered one.
Someone was lying.
Renn produced delivery photograph.
Box on Vale’s desk.
Timestamp.
Vale present.
The box existed.
Then disappeared.
What was inside besides the business card?
Della tried remembering.
Bus receipt.
Name badge.
Maybe a folded napkin.
Something else.
She suddenly stood.
“What?”
Ronan asked.
“My old phone.”
“You said your battery died.”
“It did.”
“Then what?”
“I kept it because my mother left a voicemail that week.”
The phone had been inside the box.
A cheap flip phone.
Della had used it briefly before Palmer.
Battery dead.
No one had examined it.
Why would Vale care?
Because Della may have recorded something accidentally.
She remembered holding the phone near the warehouse while trying repeatedly to make an emergency call before finding the security booth.
One failed call may have connected to voicemail recording.
Old carriers sometimes preserved drafts locally.
If the phone still contained audio from Palmer, it could be the strongest evidence yet.
Vale knew that possibility before anyone else.
Ronan’s security team searched Vale’s office camera archive.
After Renn delivered the box, Vale carried it into the underground garage.
He met a woman.
Blonde.
Cordelia.

She took the box.
Continue to the next part: Cordelia received Della’s stolen box after publicly insisting she wanted nothing to do with the Palmer evidence.
