The photograph was real.
At least according to preliminary forensic review.
Metadata matched the night.
Weather matched.
Building lights matched.
Ronan, Elias and August stood near the warehouse entrance at 1:48 a.m.
The attack began around 2:20.
August had left before Della arrived.
Ronan did not remember seeing him.
Then memory returned in fragments.
His father arguing with Elias.
A document folder.
August saying:
“You are making this harder than it needs to be.”
Ronan thought the memory belonged to an earlier office meeting.
It did not.
August had been there.
Who sent the photograph?
The anonymous email routed through privacy services.
No immediate answer.

August:
Ronan, sign the preliminary transfer. We can unwind it later.
Ronan:
Then you sign it.
August:
I cannot. Your subsidiary holds the parcel.
Ronan:
Then the answer is no.
Elias:
Malcolm is already here.
Ronan:
Good. He can hear it too.
Audio ended.
This clarified motive.
August wanted the Lakeshore transaction.
Ronan blocked it.
Malcolm arrived.
Elias arranged pressure.
At some point August left.
Violence followed.
Did August know men were waiting?
The answer might never be perfect.
But his later messages proved he knew enough afterward to cover exposure.
Ronan’s relationship with his father could no longer be preserved through uncertainty.
Della watched him process that quietly.
“You do not have to decide what kind of man he was today.”
“I do.”
“No.”
He looked at her.

Ronan sat back.

“My mother loved me and also lied to me about money because she was embarrassed by debt.”
Ronan said nothing.
“People do not become simpler because they die.”
He almost smiled.
“Do you always talk like an accountant?”
“I never finished the degree.”
“You should.”
Della looked down at her stomach.
“Maybe later.”
“Later is still allowed.”
That line stayed with her too.
The independent property review produced a serious result.
The Lakeshore transfer to the joint Vance entity had relied on invalid board consent.
However, Ashworth benefited economically for seven years.
Unwinding everything would harm innocent investors, tenants and lenders.
Legal counsel recommended negotiated restructuring rather than pretending history could be erased.
Ronan agreed.
Malcolm agreed.
The solution would likely involve financial adjustment and governance changes.
No dramatic seizure.
No burning empire.
The truth complicated ownership without requiring destruction.
Cordelia’s assault case moved separately.
Her lawyers sought a plea arrangement.
Della did not control prosecution.
She provided her statement.

She declined private settlement that required confidentiality.
That decision mattered.
Not because she wanted Cordelia publicly ruined.

She would not repeat it voluntarily.
Then police located Derek Sloan.

August Vance made no sense.

AV could be another person.
Police searched names connected to Vanguard.
Adrian Vale.
Jonathan Vale’s older brother.
Founder of Alder East Consulting.
The company that paid Vanguard.
Adrian had never appeared prominently in the investigation because Jonathan’s law role drew attention.
Adrian died four years earlier.
His archived corporate email remained with a bankruptcy trustee.
One message to Sloan:
If Ashworth resists, break the hand.
Della felt sick.
Ronan had suffered severe damage to his right hand that night.
Not from the knife.
From being stomped against concrete.
The instruction came from Adrian Vale.
Why?
The attackers needed Ronan unable to sign.
That seemed contradictory.
Unless the goal was not obtaining his signature.
Unless they needed a medical reason for someone else to sign in his place.
Emergency authority.
August’s certification.
The attack may have been designed to incapacitate Ronan so the parcel could be transferred without him.
That motive was far darker than simple intimidation.
Then another email appeared.
Adrian to Elias:
Once Ronan is medically unavailable, August can complete the authority package.
Elias:
No permanent damage.
