Chapter 9 - The Father Beneath the Chapel

Preston lowered the gun when Amelia reached the chapel stairs.
“I am not here to hurt you.”
“You brought a weapon.”
“Richard’s guards are everywhere.”
The family chapel beneath Magnolia House contained stone statues, sealed crypts, and a long table covered with legal files.
Preston looked older than he had in the ballroom.
Not powerful.
Tired.
“I learned the truth six months ago,” he said.
“You knew I was your daughter and said nothing.”
“I needed proof.”
“You watched Eleanor tear my dress apart.”
“I believed the public recognition would activate your claim.”
“You allowed me to be humiliated for money.”
“For control.”
“That is not better.”
Preston accepted the accusation.
He opened a metal case.
Inside was the full DNA report, Richard’s financial ledgers, and an audio recording from the night Amelia was conceived.
Eleanor recoiled from it.
“Destroy that.”
Richard had recorded the entire assault as leverage over Preston and Eleanor.
Preston’s hands shook.
“I did not know what he had done until I heard this months ago.”
Julian looked at him.
“You continued working for Richard’s company after learning?”
“I was trying to reach the archive.”
“By using Amelia’s wedding?”
“The marriage transfer would have given me temporary access to the trust server.”
Amelia stared at him.
“You wanted me to marry Julian so you could enter a computer.”
“I believed you loved each other.”
“We did.”
The past tense hurt both of them.
Preston placed a document on the chapel table.
“This removes Richard from every Blackwood and Caldwell trust if signed by the three legal heirs.”
Eleanor read the names.
Eleanor Blackwood.
Amelia Eleanor Hale.
Nathaniel Catherine Blackwood.
Julian.
The document recognized him as a Caldwell heir through Catherine.
“If we sign before midnight,” Preston said, “Richard loses the company, the estate, and every account.”
Charles checked the language.
“It appears valid.”
Mara shook her head.
“Nothing connected to Richard appears valid.”
The clock began striking eleven fifty nine.
They signed.
Eleanor first.
Then Amelia.
Julian hesitated.
Signing as Nathaniel Catherine Blackwood meant accepting a heritage built from another secret.
Amelia met his eyes.
“Whatever the document calls you, you are still the man who stood beside me.”
He signed.
The house lights flickered.
For one second, nothing happened.
Then every locked door opened.
The archive alarms stopped.
Richard’s voice disappeared from the speakers.
Preston exhaled.
“It worked.”
A gunshot echoed through the chapel.
Charles Vale fell beside the table.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
Richard stood at the upper entrance holding a pistol.
“You continue to believe signatures create power.”
Eleanor stepped in front of Amelia.
Richard smiled.
“They only create evidence.”
He lifted a remote.
The signed document appeared on every screen inside the house.
But beneath the signatures was a clause none of them had seen.
By signing, the heirs acknowledged Richard Blackwood as trustee until all biological relationships were independently verified.
They had not removed him.
They had restored his control.
Charles coughed from the floor.
“The page changed.”
Richard looked pleased.
“The chapel scanner replaced it when the first signature was entered.”
Julian lunged toward him.
Richard pressed the remote.
Steel bars dropped between them.
He looked at Amelia.
“At midnight, the company transfers to you.”
The final minute began counting down.
“And because you signed my trusteeship, everything you inherit belongs to me.”
Preston raised his gun.
Richard fired first.
Preston fell backward beside the altar.
Amelia screamed.
Richard walked toward the side exit.
Eleanor seized Charles’s fallen pistol.
Her hands trembled, but her aim remained steady.
“You took my daughter.”
Richard stopped.
“You gave her away first.”
“You killed your sister.”
“She threatened me.”
“You destroyed Julian.”
“I gave him a name.”
“You turned every person you loved into property.”
Richard looked at her.
“I never loved any of you.”
Eleanor pulled the trigger.
The gun clicked.
Empty.
Richard smiled.
Then Amelia noticed the dark stain spreading across his sleeve.
Someone had already shot him.
A figure stepped from behind the chapel statue.
Rose Hart stood in the shadows.
The woman Amelia buried six months earlier lifted a loaded gun.

“I told you I would not let him take her twice.”
Continue to the next part: Rose Hart returns from the dead and reveals that Amelia’s adoption was never legal because another child was exchanged in her place.
