Chapter 8 - The Confession in Eleanor’s Voice

The video continued.
Young Eleanor sat inside the nursery with tears covering her face.
“I cannot raise a child born from what Richard arranged. Every time I look at her, I remember that night.”
Amelia watched in silence.
The words hurt differently from Richard’s cruelty because they came from a woman whose grief she had begun to understand.
“I asked Samuel to take her somewhere safe,” the recording said. “I told him I might never be able to love her.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“It is real.”
Julian looked at her.
“You gave Amelia away?”
“For one night.”
Her voice shook.
After learning the truth about Amelia’s conception, Eleanor had collapsed emotionally. She asked Samuel to remove the baby from Magnolia House until she could decide what to do.
By morning, she changed her mind.
She ran to the nursery and found Lillian gone.
Richard told her kidnappers had entered through the balcony.
“He used my worst moment,” Eleanor said. “He transformed one night of fear into thirty years of punishment.”
Amelia’s eyes filled.
“You asked Samuel to take me.”
“Yes.”
“Did you believe you could not love me?”
“For several hours, I believed I could not survive looking at you.”
The answer was painful but honest.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Then I held your blanket after you were gone, and I understood that none of it was your fault. I searched until Richard convinced everyone you were dead.”
Amelia looked toward Samuel.
“You knew she wanted me back.”
“I was already hiding you.”
“You could have returned me.”
“Richard threatened Rose.”
Samuel had chosen the safest path he could see.
It still destroyed lives.
The archive timer showed six minutes.
Charles searched the legal files.
“The release document is not here.”
Mara examined the red nursery wall visible on the video.
“The original pendant may still be behind it.”
Amelia held up the jade flower.
“This is not original?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“The original had no gold repair line. Richard must have created a copy.”
The pendant that identified Amelia had also been part of Richard’s design.
The real pendant might contain a different secret.
Julian forced open the archive door using a metal bar. They returned to the nursery as gunfire echoed below.
Richard’s guards were searching the west wing.
The nursery remained almost untouched from the night Lillian disappeared.
A white crib stood beneath the window. Faded animals covered the wallpaper. One wall had been painted dark red behind a bookcase.
Eleanor moved it aside.
She pressed the carved wooden frame.
A small panel opened.
Inside was a jade pendant wrapped in yellow cloth.
Amelia placed the copy beside it.
The original magnolia flower carried no repair line.
Samuel opened its hidden compartment.
Inside was a microfilm strip and a tiny key.
Charles held the film beneath a lamp.
“These are trust amendments.”
The documents proved Richard transferred temporary control of Blackwood Industries to Eleanor while Lillian was missing.
But a final clause changed everything.
If Eleanor and Lillian were reunited, all voting authority transferred jointly to them.
Richard could not remove one without strengthening the other.
“That is why he kept us apart,” Amelia said.
Charles nodded.
The tiny key opened a locked drawer beneath the crib.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Catherine Blackwood.
Julian recognized his mother’s name.
He opened it.
Richard,
You will never know the name of my son’s father because the truth would destroy the Blackwood claim to everything you stole. Nathaniel is the first legitimate male heir of the Caldwell line, not you.
Julian looked toward Eleanor.
“What does this mean?”
Eleanor read the letter.
Her father, Edward Caldwell, had once been engaged to Catherine before family pressure forced them apart.
If Catherine’s son was Edward’s biological child, Julian was not Eleanor’s nephew by blood.
He was her half brother.
Amelia stared at him.
That would make Julian her uncle.
The relationship they feared remained impossible.
Julian looked sick.
“Richard knew?”
“He suspected,” Mara said. “That is why he kept you close but never allowed a complete genetic test.”
The clock struck eleven fifty seven.
Richard’s voice filled the nursery.
“Three minutes.”
The floor beneath the crib opened.
A hidden stairway descended into the family chapel.
Preston Hale stood below with a gun.
He looked at Amelia.

“Come with me, daughter.”
Continue to the next part: Preston Hale claims he did not know Amelia existed, but possesses the only evidence that can expose Richard before midnight.
