Chapter 4

The alley fell silent.

The joyful celebration vanished in an instant.

Lucas looked at Victoria in confusion.

"...Me?"

Victoria nodded slowly.

"The police contacted my security team an hour ago."

"They warned us not to come here without protection."

Daniel immediately stood in front of his children despite the pain in his injured back.

"Who is this man?"

Victoria answered quietly.

"His name is Marcus Hale."

"He was convicted for my kidnapping."

"He served twelve years in prison."

"And he was released this morning."

Maria wrapped her arms tightly around Lily and Noah.

"But why would he come after Lucas?"

Victoria lowered her eyes.

"Because Lucas is the reason he was caught."

Twelve years earlier...

When police found little Victoria at the bus station, she could barely speak.

She remembered almost nothing.

She couldn't describe the kidnapper.

She couldn't remember the car.

Or the house.

Or the road.

The investigation had reached a dead end.

Until one little boy spoke up.

Lucas.

The detective had knelt beside him.

"Can you remember anything?"

Lucas thought for several minutes.

Then he quietly said,

"The man who left her..."

"...had a snake tattoo on his hand."

The detectives exchanged surprised glances.

Lucas continued.

"He also walked funny."

"Like one leg hurt."

"And..."

"...his truck made a squeaky noise every time it turned."

The officers had almost dismissed those details.

But one veteran detective didn't.

He searched every known offender matching the description.

Only one man fit.

Marcus Hale.

When police searched his property...

They discovered evidence connecting him to multiple child kidnappings.

Lucas's tiny observations became the breakthrough that ended Marcus's criminal network.

Back in the present...

Victoria looked at Lucas.

"You didn't just save me."

"You helped save other children too."

Lucas stared at the ground.

"I was only answering questions."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"Sometimes that's all courage looks like."

Just then...

A police SUV pulled into the neighborhood.

Two detectives stepped out.

One of them approached Victoria.

"Ms. Sterling."

"We've increased patrols."

"But Marcus disappeared after his release."

"He cut off his electronic monitor."

Maria gasped.

"So nobody knows where he is?"

The detective shook his head.

"Not at the moment."

Before anyone could respond...

A loud engine echoed from the end of the street.

An old pickup truck slowly rolled into the neighborhood.

Its rusty brakes squealed as it stopped.

Lucas froze.

His face turned pale.

He whispered,

"I know that sound..."

The driver's door opened.

A tall man with graying hair stepped out.

A faded snake tattoo curled around his right hand.

Marcus Hale.

The entire neighborhood backed away.

Police immediately reached for their weapons.

Marcus slowly raised both hands.

"I didn't come here to fight."

No one believed him.

His eyes settled on Lucas.

For several seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

Finally Marcus said,

"So..."

"You're the little boy."

Lucas stood protectively in front of his family.

"If you're here for revenge..."

"...leave them out of it."

Marcus looked at him for a long time.

Then...

To everyone's shock...

He slowly dropped to his knees.

The police froze.

Victoria froze.

Even Lucas couldn't move.

Marcus lowered his head.

"I spent twelve years hating you."

He laughed bitterly.

"I blamed you for destroying my life."

His voice cracked.

"But prison gave me something I'd never had before."

"Time."

"Time to realize..."

"...I destroyed my own life."

He reached into his worn jacket and carefully removed a faded newspaper clipping.

It was an old article about Lucas helping flood victims as a teenager.

"I followed your story after I got out."

"You never became rich."

"You never became famous."

"You just kept helping people."

Marcus looked up, tears filling his eyes.

"And that's when I understood."

"The little boy who stopped me..."

"...grew into a better man than I ever was."

The alley was completely silent.

Marcus placed a small metal box on the ground.

"I came to return something."

Victoria frowned.

"What is it?"

Marcus slid the box toward her.

"It's everything the police never recovered."

Inside were tiny keepsakes taken from the kidnapping years ago:

A pink hair ribbon.

A silver bracelet.

A stuffed rabbit.

And a handwritten apology.

Marcus whispered,

"I can't erase what I did."

"But I don't want to die carrying what's left of that little girl's childhood."

He looked at Victoria.

"I'm sorry."

Then he turned to Lucas.

"And thank you."

Lucas frowned.

"For what?"

Marcus smiled sadly.

"For forcing me to face the man I had become."

Before anyone could say another word...

Police officers stepped forward and placed Marcus under arrest for violating the conditions of his release.

This time...

He didn't resist.

As he was escorted away, he looked back one last time.

"Protect your family, Lucas."

"They're the richest thing you'll ever own."

The police vehicles disappeared down the street.

Silence returned to the neighborhood.

Victoria looked at Lucas and smiled.

"The danger is over."

Lucas nodded.

"No."

He glanced around at the broken homes, frightened children, and exhausted parents.

"The real work starts now."

Victoria smiled.

She knew exactly what he meant.

May you like

And together...

They were about to change far more than one family's future.
