Chapter 1

The eviction notice fluttered across the cracked concrete like a final sentence.

Around it stood a crowd of curious neighbors.

Some watched in silence.

Others whispered.

No one stepped forward to help.

The neighborhood had seen too many families lose everything.

This was simply another tragedy.

Or so they believed.

The small house at the end of the alley looked ready to collapse.

Its roof sagged beneath years of neglect.

Several windows were covered with plywood.

Graffiti covered the fading walls.

Rainwater leaked through holes in the ceiling every winter.

Yet despite everything...

It was still home.

The only home the Ramirez family had ever known.

Today...

They were about to lose it.

Maria Ramirez fell to her knees on the broken pavement.

Tears streamed down her weathered face.

She clasped her trembling hands together toward the bank representative standing nearby.

"Please..."

Her voice cracked.

"Don't evict us."

"We have nowhere else to go."

Beside her, her husband Daniel knelt as well.

The proud construction worker who had once supported his family now struggled just to breathe.

A workplace accident two years earlier had permanently damaged his spine.

He could no longer work full-time.

Medical bills had swallowed every dollar they had.

Then came the missed mortgage payments.

One after another.

Until today.

Their two youngest children clung tightly to their parents.

Nine-year-old Lily cried uncontrollably.

Little Noah buried his face against his mother's shoulder.

Neither child fully understood what foreclosure meant.

They only knew strangers wanted to take their house away.

And that terrified them.

Standing in front of them was seventeen-year-old Lucas.

The oldest child.

His faded shirt was torn at one shoulder.

His worn sneakers had holes in the soles.

He had quit school the previous year to work odd jobs.

Delivering groceries.

Cleaning construction sites.

Repairing bicycles.

Anything that brought home enough money for bread.

He spread his arms protectively in front of his family.

"If someone has to leave..."

"It'll be me."

"But don't make my parents and brother and sister homeless."

Even the bank representative looked uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry."

"I don't make the rules."

"The property has already been sold."

Maria broke down completely.

"Please..."

"Just give us one more month."

No answer came.

Then...

A deep engine rumbled at the entrance of the alley.

Every head turned.

A sleek black luxury SUV slowly rolled toward the crumbling house.

Its polished body reflected the broken buildings surrounding it.

The vehicle looked completely out of place.

Neighbors immediately began whispering.

"Who is that?"

"Someone important?"

"Maybe the new owner."

Maria's face turned even paler.

She grabbed Daniel's hand.

"They're here."

"It's over."

The SUV stopped directly in front of the family.

A uniformed driver stepped out first.

He walked respectfully to the rear passenger door and opened it.

High heels touched the pavement.

Then...

A woman in an impeccably tailored gray business suit stepped out.

She couldn't have been older than thirty.

Her posture radiated quiet confidence.

A silver watch gleamed beneath the afternoon sun.

Everything about her spoke of extraordinary success.

The crowd assumed she was the investor who had purchased the property.

Some neighbors looked away, unable to watch what came next.

Maria bowed her head.

"We'll leave peacefully."

"Please..."

"Don't call the police."

The elegant woman said nothing.

She simply looked at the family.

Then...

Her eyes stopped on Lucas.

For a brief second...

Her composed expression disappeared.

Her lips trembled.

Tears filled her eyes.

Lucas frowned.

He had never seen her before.

Or so he thought.

The woman took one slow step forward.

Then another.

Everyone expected her to hand over legal documents.

Instead...

She suddenly dropped to her knees in front of the ragged teenage boy.

The entire neighborhood gasped.

Lucas froze.

"M-Ma'am?"

The elegant woman looked up at him through tears.

Her voice broke into a sob.

"Big brother..."

The words stunned everyone into silence.

Lucas blinked in confusion.

"I'm sorry..."

"I think you've mistaken me for someone else."

She shook her head over and over.

"No."

"I could never mistake you."

She reached into her designer handbag and carefully removed a faded photograph.

It showed two children.

A thin teenage boy with scraped knees...

Standing beside a frightened little girl wearing oversized clothes.

Lucas stared at the picture.

His breathing stopped.

He recognized the boy immediately.

It was him.

Taken twelve years earlier.

The woman smiled through tears.

"You shared your only meal with me."

"You protected me."

"You saved my life."

She gently took his rough, calloused hands into hers.

The same hands that had spent years working to keep his family alive.

Then, in front of the entire neighborhood, she whispered the words that changed everything.

"Big brother..."

"Everything I own today..."

"...is because you saved me."

The alley fell completely silent.

No one understood what they had just witnessed.

May you like

Least of all...

Lucas himself.
