Declan’s first answer was no.
Norah’s was also no.
Marcus surprised both of them.
“I am going.”
Declan looked at him.
“You are compromised.”
“He is my father.”
“Exactly.”
“If he is alive.”
“Exactly.”
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Norah understood.
A dead father returning through evidence could make any rational rule feel temporary.
She had spent one night learning that.
“We do not bring me,” she said.
Marcus looked toward her.
“He asked for you.”
“That does not mean we obey.”
Declan nodded.
“Finally someone in this room making sense.”
Norah ignored him.
“We find out why he needs me.”
They reviewed Janus.

Raven wanted the missing page exchanged for her.

“What materials?” she asked.
Gabriel continued.
“Not the silver case.”
“Then what?”
“Secondary archive.”
“Where?”
“Location sealed.”
“Who is custodian?”
Gabriel looked at Declan.
“Patrick Hayes.”
Patrick dead.

Declan Hayes.
Everyone went silent.
Declan stared.
“I have never seen this.”
“Your father never transferred the schedule.”
“Then how does Raven know?”
“He may have Martin’s copy.”
Norah understood.
Raven did not need her dead.

That was why Leah received:

Why her finances were destroyed but she was kept alive.
Why she was placed inside the mansion.
Raven expected Declan and Norah to discover the trust eventually.
Then he could force them to open it.
The missing page likely contained the location or authorization instructions.
The East Pier exchange was bait.
They did not attend physically.
Law enforcement was complicated because Hayes history involved criminal exposure.
Still, attempted murder and stalking were current crimes.
Declan finally allowed a federal task force contact through Gabriel.
No romantic outlaw solution.
No private execution.
They built surveillance.

Marcus stayed in a command vehicle.

“You should be in bed.”
“I am sitting.”
“You were shot yesterday.”
“Technically today.”

At 11:58, an older man walked onto the pier.
Cap.
Dark coat.
Walked like Marcus.
Same shoulders.
Same habit of touching his left cuff.
Marcus watched the feed.
His breathing changed.
“That is him.”
Thomas Shaw.
Raven.
Alive.
He carried one envelope.
No visible weapon.
Agents waited.
Thomas stopped beneath a dock light.
Looked directly toward a camera no ordinary person should have known existed.
Then spoke.
“Marcus.”
The command vehicle went silent.
“You always put cameras too high.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
A childhood lesson.
Thomas knew.

“Norah is not coming.”
No response.
Thomas smiled.
“Declan finally learned patience.”

Norah stared.

Then one folder Norah did not expect.
REBECCA VALE.
Her mother.
Norah froze.
“Why is Mom in the evidence archive?”
Declan said nothing.
They opened the index only.
Not the files.
Rebecca folder contained one audio recording.

Rebecca Vale.
Thomas Shaw.
Unknown male.
Norah stared at the third label.
UNKNOWN MALE.
Voiceprint analysis had never been completed.
She pressed play.
Her mother’s voice.
“You promised Norah would never be used.”
Thomas:
“That was before Elias decided to expose Janus.”
Rebecca:
“She is a child.”
Unknown male:
“She is leverage.”
Norah stopped the recording.
Her hands were shaking.
Declan reached toward her.
Stopped before touching.
Good.
She needed space.
“My mother knew Thomas.”
“Yes.”
“Not after Dad died.”
“Before.”
“She negotiated with him.”
“Apparently.”
Norah pressed play again.
Rebecca:
“If you touch my daughter again, I give Elias everything I know.”
Unknown male laughed.
Then said:
“You still think Elias does not know what you did.”
Norah stopped the audio.
“What did Mom do?”
No one knew.
Thomas Shaw sat in federal custody refusing to identify the unknown male.
Marcus refused to see his father until counsel arranged it.
Adrian was cleared of the immediate attack evidence but remained part of the historical medical review.
Vincent’s role in old Hayes secrecy remained morally ugly and legally complicated.
Leah entered cooperation proceedings.
Ryan faced financial fraud charges but received consideration for helping expose Janus.
Declan survived.
The silver case remained secured.
Norah did not return to maid duty.
Declan offered money.
She refused.
He offered legal help repairing her credit because Janus had built much of the fraudulent debt.
She accepted only after lawyers documented it as restitution tied to the identity scheme, not a favor.
“I still owe you for saving my life,” he said.
“No.”
“You do.”
“You paid me on Fridays.”
“For cleaning.”
“I did more than cleaning.”
He almost smiled.
She did too.
Then grew serious.
“What happens to Thomas?”
“Court.”
“What happens to Janus?”
“We dismantle what we can prove.”
“What happens to the unknown man?”
Declan looked toward the encrypted Rebecca folder.
“We find him.”
Norah stared at her mother’s name.
For one night, she had believed the deepest secret was why Declan Hayes kept her photograph inside a silver case.
Now she knew the photograph had only been a marker.
Declan watched her because her identity opened Elias’s vault.
Raven placed her inside the mansion because Elias’s trust required her alive.
Thomas Shaw had poisoned her as a child and spent years hiding behind a dead doctor’s name.
Those questions had answers.
Not complete justice.

But the oldest recording inside Elias’s secondary archive had created a new question.
What had Rebecca Vale done before her husband died?
Norah selected the next audio file.

Her father’s voice appeared first.
“Rebecca, where is Norah?”
Her mother answered:
“Safe.”
“Who did you call?”
Silence.
Then:
“I made a deal.”
Elias:
“With whom?”
Rebecca began crying.
“With the only person Thomas is afraid of.”
The recording cut off.
No name.
No explanation.
Only a second file beneath it.

Norah looked at Declan.
The same phrase written inside the silver case.
She moved the cursor toward the file.
Then the estate security alarm sounded downstairs.
Not a system error.
Vehicle at the gate.
One black sedan.
Driver alone.
Marcus looked at the camera feed from the study.
His face changed.
“That is impossible.”

“Who?”

Older woman.
White hair.
Dark coat.
Declan stared at the monitor.
Vincent went completely still.
Norah did not recognize her.
Then the woman looked directly into the gate camera and held up a photograph.
Elias Vale.
Rebecca Vale.
Norah as a child.
And herself.
On the back, written large enough for the camera to catch:
NORAH DESERVES TO KNOW WHICH OF HER PARENTS LIED FIRST.
Norah felt the room disappear around her.
“Who is she?”
Declan answered quietly.
“My mother’s sister.”
Celeste Hayes’s sister.
A woman the Hayes family records said had been dead for eighteen years.
