Chapter 14 - The Fire Below the Mansion
The archive fire stayed contained.
Concrete room.
Automatic suppression.
Most paper was soaked rather than burned.
A firefighter suffered smoke irritation.
No one died.
That mattered more than documents.
Then evidence teams entered.
The fire originated near one shelving unit.
Accelerant.
Deliberate.
Security camera footage had been looped.
Again through Marcus’s administrative system.
But this time the attacker made a mistake.
The archive door had a mechanical sign in sheet because old files were too sensitive for ordinary digital access.
Last entry:
11:06 p.m.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
Adrian stared at the page.
“I was home.”
“Your signature,” Marcus said.
“Not mine.”
Forensic comparison later supported him.
Different stroke.
Someone wanted Adrian everywhere.
Ring.
Medical shipment.
Archive log.
Too much.
Norah said:
“He is being framed.”
Declan nodded.
“Probably.”
Adrian looked almost offended by probably.
Then firefighters recovered a metal document case from the wet shelving.
MARTIN KNOX PRIVATE.
Gabriel opened it with independent witnesses.
Inside:
Janus company lists.
Old medical indexes.
Copies of forged identities.
Payment ledgers.
And a handwritten operations book.
No need to guess anymore.
Martin had continued Janus after Patrick claimed it was shut down.
Who worked with him?
Initials.
S.G.
Could mean Samuel Gray.
V.H.
Vincent Hayes.
A.C.
Adrian Cole.
M.S.
Marcus Shaw.
Every major suspect.
Norah almost laughed.
Initials alone proved little.
Then full payment notes clarified.
V.H. STORAGE CONTRACTOR ONLY.
A.C. MEDICAL RECORD ACCESS UNKNOWN.
M.S. SECURITY FAMILY FILES.
Martin documented resources, not necessarily willing conspirators.
The real operator code appeared repeatedly:
RAVEN.
Who was Raven?
No full name.
Then one entry from the year Elias died.
E.V. threatens exposure.
RAVEN says vehicle problem will solve.
Norah stopped breathing.
Vehicle problem.
Her father’s crash.
Declan read the next line.
P.H. refuses authorization.
Patrick Hayes refused.
Then:
RAVEN proceeding independently.
Someone inside Janus arranged Elias’s death without Patrick’s approval.
The next page:
E.V. dead.
RAVEN requests Rebecca monitoring.
Norah gripped the table.
Her mother had been watched for six years after Elias died.
Then:
Rebecca identifies Norah Briar House incident risk. RAVEN orders no contact unless she remembers.
Years later:
Rebecca ill.
RAVEN retrieves copied index.
Then after Rebecca’s death:
Norah low risk.
Until Ryan.
Then Janus restarted using her identity.
Declan asked:
“Who had Raven code?”
Gabriel searched his father’s legend pages.
Missing.
Of course.
Then one envelope fell from the case.
Martin’s handwriting:
IF RAVEN SURVIVES ME, CHECK THE CHURCH LEDGER.
Which church?
St. Bartholomew.
Where Patrick Hayes, Elias Vale, Martin Knox, and Samuel Gray once attended private charitable board meetings.
Norah stared.
“My father went there.”
Declan nodded.
“So did mine.”
They searched church donation records.
Old paper.
Not digital.
One donor account used code RAVEN.
Annual contributions began twenty four years ago.
Continued after Patrick died.
After Martin died.
After Samuel Gray died.
Still active.
Last donation:
Two weeks earlier.
Paid by cashier’s check.
Purchaser bank camera existed.
The image came in that night.
Older man.
Sixties.
Cap.
Glasses.
Face visible enough.
Vincent saw it first.
He sat down.
“No.”
Declan looked.
His expression changed.
Norah stepped closer.
“Who is he?”
Vincent whispered:
“Thomas Shaw.”
Marcus’s father.
Marcus went completely still.
“My father is dead.”
Declan looked at him.
“When?”
“Seventeen years ago.”
“Body?”
Marcus’s face drained.
“Closed casket.”
Another dead man.
Another identity.
But the bank image did look like old photographs of Thomas Shaw.
Older.
Alive.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“My mother buried him.”
“Maybe she buried someone,” Gabriel said quietly.
Marcus turned on him.
“Careful.”
Norah asked:
“Who was Thomas Shaw?”
Vincent answered.
“Patrick’s security chief before Marcus.”
Father and son.
Thomas had access to everyone.
Medical rooms.
Cars.
Archive transfers.
Samuel Gray’s movements.
Elias’s routes.
He could have worn Gray’s coat at Briar House.
Could have handed Norah the drink.
Could have arranged a vehicle problem years later.
Could have preserved Janus.
Could have used his own dead son Kevin’s identity to create Graybridge.
Could have exploited Marcus’s credentials because he knew how Hayes security operated.
But evidence still needed to connect.
Marcus looked destroyed.
“My father hit my mother.”
No one spoke.
“He disappeared when I was twenty two. They found a burned car. Dental records confirmed him.”
“Whose dental records?” Norah asked.
Marcus looked toward Vincent.
“Hayes private clinic.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Samuel Gray signed identification.”
There it was.
Gray could certify a false body.
Thomas Shaw could become legally dead.
Then live as Raven.
Norah asked:
“Why?”
Declan answered:
“Because dead men do not get investigated.”
The cashier’s check gave a new lead.
Account funding came from a Janus shell.
Vale Home Services.
Norah’s stolen company.
Ryan’s debt.
Raven had been using her identity to fund his own survival.
Then the estate gates alarmed.
A vehicle forced entry.
Marcus looked at the camera.
Old black sedan.
Driver hidden.
The sedan stopped outside the main steps.
No one exited.
Bomb team approached remotely.
Inside the car:
No explosive.
One envelope.
Addressed to Marcus.
He opened it under controlled conditions.
A photograph of Thomas Shaw.
Current.
Standing outside Norah’s old apartment.
On the back:
SON, YOU WERE ALWAYS EASIER TO USE THAN TO REPLACE.
Marcus’s hands began shaking.
Then another line.
