Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Chose One Daughter

Brooke stared at the photograph in Ethan’s hand.
For a moment, she looked exactly like Claire.
Same green eyes.
Same pale complexion.
Same scar above the left eyebrow.
Then anger twisted her features into something Claire had never seen in herself.
“Give me that.”
Ethan moved the photograph away.
“Answer the question.”
Brooke looked toward Claire.
“You have been waiting for this.”
Claire lay against the hospital pillows, exhausted.
“Waiting for what?”
“To ruin me.”
“You pushed me from my wheelchair.”
“You embarrassed me at my engagement.”
Claire stared in disbelief.
“I embarrassed you?”
Margaret entered behind Brooke.
The moment she saw the photograph, she went pale.
“Where did you get that?”
Claire looked at her mother.
“Dad sent it.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with alarm.
“When?”
“Before he died.”
Brooke turned toward her.
“You said he destroyed everything.”
Margaret’s expression collapsed.
The room became silent.
Ethan looked between them.
“You knew.”
Margaret tried to recover.
“This is complicated.”
“No,” Ethan said. “One sister drove drunk. The other was nearly killed. You blamed the injured one.”
“I was protecting my family.”
Claire felt the familiar ache of betrayal.
“You were protecting Brooke.”
Margaret moved toward the bed.
“You were already hurt.”
The sentence was so cruel that even Brooke looked surprised.
Margaret continued desperately.
“Brooke still had a future.”
Claire stared at her mother.
“And I did not?”
“That is not what I meant.”
“It is exactly what you meant.”
For four years, Claire had wondered why her mother found it so easy to support the lie.
Now she knew.
Margaret had looked at her injured daughter and decided the damage was already done.
Brooke could still marry well.
Build a career.
Preserve the Whitaker name.
Claire’s life had become the price they were willing to pay.
Ethan folded the photograph inside the letter.
“I am giving this to the police.”
Brooke lunged toward him.
She grabbed the paper.
Ethan caught her wrist.
“Let go.”
“That belongs to my family.”
“It belongs to the woman you framed.”
Brooke struggled.
The diamond ring flashed between them.
Ethan released her suddenly and stepped back.
Then he removed his own engagement ring from the chain he wore beneath his shirt.
Brooke stared.
“What are you doing?”
He placed it on the hospital table.
“This engagement is over.”
Her face emptied.
“You do not mean that.”
“I watched you hurt your sister.”
“She provoked me.”
“I heard you call her a liar while she was on the floor.”
Brooke’s voice rose.
“She has always wanted you.”
Claire looked away.
It was the oldest weapon Brooke possessed.
If someone treated Claire kindly, Brooke claimed jealousy.
If Claire objected to cruelty, Brooke called it competition.
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Do not blame her for what you did.”
Brooke turned toward Claire.
“You think he will choose you now?”
Claire’s face burned.
“This is not about him choosing me.”
“It is always about someone choosing you.”
“No,” Claire said softly. “It is about everyone choosing you no matter who you hurt.”
Margaret began crying.
“Please stop. We can resolve this privately.”
Ethan looked at her.
“That is how you created this.”
The family attorney entered and requested that everyone calm down.
He explained that reopening the accident case could create civil and criminal consequences.
Brooke could face charges for false reporting, evidence tampering, and impaired driving.
Margaret could face obstruction accusations.
Claire watched fear move across their faces.
Neither asked what justice would mean for her.
They only calculated what truth would cost them.
The attorney turned toward Claire.
“There may be a way to settle this without public damage.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Do not offer her money.”
The attorney remained calm.
“I am trying to protect all parties.”
Claire looked at him.
“What would protection look like?”
“A private financial agreement. Medical support. A trust.”
Brooke folded her arms.
“She already receives money from the family.”
Claire felt humiliated.
The allowance came from their father’s estate because she could no longer work in her former position.
Brooke often described it as charity.
Claire looked toward the photograph.
“For four years, you told me I should be grateful.”
Margaret moved closer.
“We paid for the best doctors.”
“You paid for silence.”
The truth stunned even Claire.
She had never said it aloud.
Now that she had, she could not return to quiet endurance.
A police officer appeared at the doorway.
Hospital security had called after Brooke’s outburst.
Ethan handed him the photograph and letter.
Brooke grabbed Margaret’s arm.
“Do something.”
Margaret looked at Claire.
For one final moment, Claire hoped her mother would choose truth.
Instead, Margaret whispered, “Please tell them you are confused.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The hope died cleanly.
When she opened them again, her voice was steady.
“I remember who was driving.”
The officer took notes.
Ethan remained beside her.
Brooke and Margaret were asked to leave while investigators reviewed the evidence.
Brooke pointed toward Claire from the doorway.
“If this destroys me, it destroys you too.”
Claire looked at her twin.
“No. It finally separates us.”
The door closed.
Claire expected relief.
Instead, she felt grief.
She had not only lost a sister.
She had lost the mother she kept hoping would return.
The next morning, the original investigator contacted her.
He remembered inconsistencies in Brooke’s statement.
He also remembered being pressured by a Whitaker family lawyer to close the case quickly.
With the photograph and their father’s confession, authorities agreed to reopen the investigation.
Then another witness came forward.
A former rooftop valet had watched Brooke drink heavily before the accident.
He had remained silent after receiving money from Margaret.
The lie was beginning to collapse.
But Brooke still held one secret that could damage Claire.
A medical report written after the crash claimed Claire had alcohol in her blood.
Claire had never understood how that was possible.

The reopened investigation revealed that the sample might not have belonged to her.
Continue to the next part: The hospital record will expose a deliberate switch made after the accident, and the person responsible will force Margaret to choose between protecting Brooke and saving herself.
