Chapter 1 - The Sister Everyone Chose to Believe

Claire Whitaker had learned that people became uncomfortable around pain they could not fix.

Some stared at her wheelchair.

Others looked away too quickly.

The cruelest people smiled at her as though compassion were a favor they deserved praise for giving.

Her twin sister Brooke had perfected that smile.

She wore it while standing beneath golden string lights on a luxury rooftop overlooking downtown Chicago. Two hundred guests surrounded her, raising crystal glasses to celebrate her engagement to Ethan Collins.

Brooke looked flawless in a champagne colored gown. Her honey blonde hair fell across one shoulder in carefully arranged waves. The diamond on her finger caught the city lights whenever she moved.

Claire wore a navy evening dress and a light shawl. She sat near the edge of the gathering in her modern wheelchair, trying not to become the center of anyone’s concern.

She had almost refused the invitation.

Their mother, Margaret, had begged her to attend.

“Brooke wants her sister there,” Margaret had said.

Claire knew better.

Brooke wanted the photograph.

Two identical daughters standing together.

One beautiful and triumphant.

The other injured, quiet, and easy to pity.

Claire had spent four years inside that role.

The tragic sister.

The damaged twin.

The woman who survived the car accident but never walked normally again.

Everyone believed Brooke had saved her that night.

That was the story their mother repeated.

That was the story newspapers printed.

Brooke had pulled Claire from a burning car after Claire lost control on a wet road.

Only Claire remembered the truth differently.

She remembered Brooke driving.

She remembered the argument.

She remembered Brooke reaching for Claire’s phone.

She remembered the car crossing the center line.

Most of all, she remembered waking in the hospital and hearing her mother whisper that the family could not survive another scandal.

Claire had been heavily medicated.

Brooke had already given her statement.

By the time Claire could speak clearly, the story had hardened around her like concrete.

She had caused the crash.

Brooke had been the hero.

Claire tried to correct them once.

Margaret cried.

Brooke accused her of being confused from trauma.

Their father told her gratitude would help her heal.

After that, Claire stopped speaking.

Silence became easier than watching everyone choose the prettier version of the truth.

That evening, Ethan approached her with a warm smile.

“I am glad you came.”

Claire returned the smile.

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

He glanced toward Brooke, who was laughing beside several investors.

“She talks about you often.”

Claire almost asked what Brooke said.

Instead, she replied, “I hope tonight gives you everything you wanted.”

Ethan studied her expression.

There had always been something perceptive about him.

Perhaps that was why Brooke worked so hard to control what he knew.

Before he could ask another question, Brooke appeared beside them.

“There you are.”

She kissed Ethan’s cheek.

Then she looked toward Claire.

Her smile remained perfect.

“Mom wants family pictures near the floral platform.”

Claire adjusted her shawl.

“I can come over in a minute.”

“No. Now.”

Ethan frowned slightly.

“Brooke.”

She laughed.

“I only want my sister in the pictures.”

She stepped behind Claire’s wheelchair and gripped the handles.

Claire immediately stiffened.

“I can move myself.”

“I know.”

Brooke’s fingers tightened.

“Stop making everything difficult.”

Ethan was called away by the photographer.

Brooke began pushing Claire toward the floral platform.

The crowd opened for them.

To everyone watching, it appeared loving.

A devoted twin helping her injured sister.

When they reached the edge of the display, Brooke leaned close to Claire’s ear.

“You have been staring at Ethan all night.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

“You always want what belongs to me.”

“That is not true.”

“You ruined enough of my life after the accident.”

Claire felt the old fear returning.

“Brooke, please let go.”

Brooke’s smile widened for the nearby guests.

“Stop faking for attention already.”

Claire looked toward Ethan.

He stood several feet away, speaking with the event coordinator.

“Brooke, do not.”

Her sister pushed.

Hard.

The wheelchair shot forward.

The right wheel struck the low marble edge beneath the flowers.

Claire felt the chair twist.

For one suspended second, she saw the skyline tilt.

Then she hit the marble floor.

Pain exploded through her hip and lower back.

A champagne glass shattered nearby.

Music stopped.

Two hundred people gasped as one.

Claire tried to breathe.

Her body would not cooperate.

Brooke remained standing above her, hands still raised from the shove.

Ethan stared at his fiancée.

“Brooke.”

His voice sounded unfamiliar.

“What have you done?”

Brooke’s confidence flickered.

Then she lifted her chin.

“She is exaggerating.”

Claire pressed one hand against her hip.

The pain pulsed through the old surgical scars.

“She always does this,” Brooke continued. “Every event becomes about her.”

Guests backed away, forming a wide circle.

Nobody helped immediately.

They watched.

Just as they had watched Claire’s entire life collapse while accepting Brooke’s version of the truth.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“Brooke, why would you push her?”

“I barely touched the chair.”

Claire looked up at her sister.

Tears blurred the golden lights.

“You finally showed him who you really are.”

Brooke’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Ethan stepped toward Claire and removed his tuxedo jacket.

He knelt beside her.

“Do not move.”

Claire gripped his sleeve.

“My hip.”

“I am calling an ambulance.”

Brooke moved closer.

“She does not need an ambulance.”

Ethan looked at her.

The love in his face was gone.

“Stay away from her.”

Brooke stopped.

For the first time that night, the entire rooftop saw something more shocking than Claire falling.

They saw Ethan look at the woman he planned to marry as though she were a stranger.

Continue to the next part: Ethan will discover that Claire’s injuries are far more serious than Brooke claims, while one old photograph forces him to question everything he was told about the accident.
