Chapter 9 - My Father’s Signature

The 2023 request was for:
Beneficiary residential security and educational continuity.
$74,000.
The document claimed I signed.
Witness:
David M. Bennett.
My father’s handwriting looked close.
Too close.
Arthur had access to old mortgage documents and estate files stored after my father died.
The trust company should have caught impossible witness.
Why didn’t?
The PDF had been uploaded through an old portal workflow during a system migration.
The witness field was not automatically cross checked.
The name “David Bennett” did not trigger because internal records did not map witness data.
A human reviewer missed.
Commonwealth admitted failure.
The funds were paid to Sterling Residential.
What did Arthur do?
$38,000 toward home equity line.
$20,000 business payroll.
$16,000 into H.B. care reserve.
He used dead father to steal from daughter.
I thought nothing could make me angrier than flashlight.
I was wrong.
Then Detective Reyes asked:
“Did mother know about David signature?”
Lauren said no.
Arthur handled that request alone using login credentials tied to Lauren.
Device IP from his office.
Metadata showed PDF created on his laptop.
Digital signature image extracted from my college enrollment form.
David signature from old will.
Strong.
Then 2024 and 2025 forgeries.
Some Lauren witnessed knowingly.
Some Arthur alone.
Fraud pattern.
Then the original trust.
My father had not set this up expecting monsters.
He expected ordinary.
College.
Health.
Housing.
The trust paid my private school after his death.
Dental braces.
Summer science camp.
Tuition.
He trusted my mother to request honestly.
Arthur entered later.
Gradual.
Then Aunt June told me something.
“Your father didn’t like Arthur.”
“What?”
“They met twice before David died.”
Wait Arthur married Lauren after death, but perhaps Arthur worked property firm involved with our neighborhood and knew family. Could be coincidence. But do we need extra secret? Might complicate. Better no pre-death connection. June says father worried about anyone controlling trust, not Arthur. Keep no hidden murder twist.
She said David once told:
“If I’m gone, Harper’s money should never become household money.”
That was why independent trustee.
Then:
“Did Mom know?”
“Yes.”
Of course.
Lauren violated not ignorance.
Then my father’s letter in trust file.
At eighteen, beneficiary should receive.
Commonwealth had mailed copy to home.
Arthur intercepted.
Miriam now gave.
Harper,
If you’re reading this, you’re old enough to be annoyed I put rules around money.
I laughed through tears.
Then:
Good. Be annoyed. Rules are not proof you are incapable. They are there because money can distort relationships around young people, including people who sincerely love them.
Then:
Ask questions. Demand statements. Fire advisers who make you feel stupid for asking.
My throat closed.
Then:
Never sign something because someone says refusing proves you don’t understand it.
I sobbed.
My father wrote that before Arthur.
Generic wisdom.
Now prophecy.
Then:
If you choose to share money with family, make it choice, not rent you pay for belonging.
I held letter to chest.
For six years Arthur had told:
Trust money paid for roof.
Food.
My education.
Therefore I owed.
My father had anticipated emotional debt.
Then one more:
Your mother loves you. She may make mistakes. So will you. Love people, but keep independent professionals between love and money when you can.
I stared.
Commonwealth.
Miriam.
The system had failed some.
But it also preserved most.
Then chapter end twist: Commonwealth's internal audit found someone inside trust company approved suspicious distributions without proper verification? Could create accomplice, maybe not necessary but adds twist. But better avoid new villain. We can have process failure not corruption. Need cliffhanger though.
Miriam said:
“There is one more issue.”
“What?”
“The $74,000 request wasn't approved by standard review.”
“Who approved?”
“A senior officer used override.”
My stomach tightened.
“Did Arthur know him?”
May you like
“We're checking.”
This could be a new insider. But then may balloon. Could be legitimate former officer who had social connection to Arthur and accepted docs casually, not knowingly corrupt. Maybe retired "Gerald Moss", a golf acquaintance. He later admits Arthur asked expedite, no knowledge forgery. This shows negligence not conspiracy. Good twist.
