Chapter 11 - The Woman My Mother Had Become

I watched the office video once.

No more.

Lauren stood against filing cabinet after Arthur slapped her.

He immediately softened.

Classic.

“Baby, look what you make me do.”

I had heard variations.

Then he touched face.

She flinched.

He apologized.

She cried.

Then he said:

“We fix this together.”

That sentence kept her.

Together.

Meaning fraud.

Cover.

Control.

Then she asked:

“What if Harper goes police?”

Arthur:

“She won’t. She still wants you.”

That line cut.

He understood my love for mother as leverage.

Then:

“And if she does, you say she’s unstable.”

Lauren:

“No.”

Arthur:

“You already have.”

There.

Past compromise creates future control.

Then I agreed to meet Lauren through restorative pretrial mediation? Better not while criminal case pending and witnesses; could risk. We could meet with lawyers’ approval after plea finalized maybe later. For now no direct.

Instead she wrote.

Harper,

Arthur hit me too. I hate that part of me wants you to know because I’m afraid you think I stayed because I didn’t love you.

Then:

But even if he never hit me, I still should have protected you.

Good.

Then:

There were times I knew exactly what I was signing.

Then:

There were times I resented you for asking questions because your questions threatened the life I had chosen.

That honesty hurt.

Then:

I am not asking you to understand before trial.

I put letter away.

Then school.

I studied business law? Maybe environmental science? Let's not make trauma define career. I had always wanted architectural design? Since father construction? Hmm. Could choose forensic accounting too on-the-nose. Let's say I studied communications and digital media? But trust details show smart. Could later become UX researcher. Not important.

I had been majoring in biology perhaps. Let's choose occupational therapy prerequisite? Maybe too medical. We can leave "college."

Then Arthur's family tried contact.

His sister Marlene called Aunt June:

“Harper is destroying Arthur.”

June answered:

“Arthur is indicted.”

No more.

Then social media.

I did not engage.

No revenge posts.

Then hospital records.

Dr. Thorne documented:

Patient alert and oriented.

Reports assault.

Family members repeatedly answer for patient.

Visible bruising of varying ages.

Stepparent attempted to compel signature.

Observed physical assault in ER.

Patient then exhibited movements which she later stated were intentionally performed to force separation. Movements not consistent with epileptic seizure on clinical observation.

Precise.

Defense could use.

Prosecution too.

Then CT older nasal fracture.

Could support past but not identify assailant.

I testified to door incident.

No charges because statute/time/evidence maybe.

Then urgent care June wrist.

Records:

Patient states slipped carrying laundry.

No imaging.

A nurse note:

Patient avoids eye contact when companion mother answers.

That nurse did not remember years? Only months, may testify if needed. But no need.

Then Maya's testimony.

Four months before hospital, I told her:

“If I ever say I’m moving away suddenly, call me on another number.”

Why?

I feared impersonation.

I also gave her copies of three photos and said:

“If something happens, give police.”

So evidence existed outside pouch.

That helped counter claim I fabricated after assault.

Then trust company email June.

My direct complaints predated.

Then I had called campus counseling office about controlling stepfather.

Notes.

No diagnosis of paranoia.

Counselor wrote:

Student reports financial control and fear of retaliation.

That predated.

Then Arthur’s capacity plan backfired.

Every document he used to portray me unstable had counterpart showing rational help seeking.

Then court hearing on bail.

Arthur released? He may have been held or bond. Given serious but not murder, likely bond with strict no-contact, electronic monitoring maybe. We need realism. He could be released after secured bond, no contact, passport surrender. Fine.

I panicked when told.

He lived with sister outside county.

No contact.

Then an envelope arrived at my apartment with no return.

Inside one photo.

Me at age twelve with father David.

On back:

HE WOULD BE ASHAMED OF WHAT YOU’RE DOING TO YOUR MOTHER.

I froze.

Could be Arthur despite no contact.

Police investigated.

Fingerprint? None.

Postmark near sister.

Arthur denied.

Could be his sister.

No proof.

We did not claim violation.

Then Lauren’s lawyer sent message:

“I did not send.”

I believed.

Then Aunt June said:

“David would be ashamed of adults who used his daughter’s money.”

I laughed through anger.

Then prosecutors found source.

Marlene admitted mailing after interview.

No Arthur instruction proven.

She received warning not to contact.

Good.

No false violation.

Then trial date set.

Lauren’s plea would occur before.

She asked to enter guilty plea.

And at hearing, the judge asked one question:

“Mrs. Sterling, did fear of your husband force you to sign documents you knew were false?”

Lauren looked at Arthur’s empty side of courtroom.

Then said:

“No.”

I stopped breathing.

She continued:

May you like

“Fear influenced me. It did not force my hand.”

For the first time, my mother took responsibility without hiding behind him.
