Chapter 9 - The Father Who Remembered Everything

The tower gate opened.

Emma entered before the federal commander could pull her back.

The ground floor was empty.

A trail of blood marked the stone stairs.

She climbed slowly, one hand pressed against her injured ribs.

“Lydia?”

No answer.

At the second floor, she found Rachel lying beside the wall.

Blood covered her shoulder.

She was conscious.

“Cole shot me,” she whispered.

“Where is Lydia?”

“Top floor.”

Emma started upward.

Rachel caught her ankle.

“Take the player.”

The device lay beneath the railing.

Emma placed it inside her torn pocket.

“Dad recorded more than Gareth knows.”

“What?”

“The final file opens with both voices.”

“Whose voices?”

“Yours and Lydia’s.”

Emma continued upstairs.

The top floor contained the trust console and twelve narrow windows.

Lydia remained tied to the chair.

Daniel’s wheelchair had been pushed beside the keypad.

Cole stood near the forest window firing toward agents below.

Gareth waited behind Lydia with one arm around her neck.

“You came,” he said.

Emma looked at her sister.

“Are you hurt?”

Lydia shook her head slightly.

Daniel lifted his face.

For four years, Emma had imagined finding him.

In every version, he stood, embraced them, and explained everything.

Reality was quieter.

His body had been damaged. His speech was slow. His eyes carried the exhaustion of someone who had survived too long in one locked room after another.

“My girl,” he whispered.

Emma’s tears fell.

Gareth pressed the gun against Lydia.

“Your six numbers.”

Emma approached the console.

“Let her go first.”

“You are not negotiating.”

“You need both of us.”

“I need your memory. Not your comfort.”

Cole shouted from the window.

“They breached the lower floor.”

Gareth forced Daniel’s hand onto the scanner again.

The first light turned green.

He inserted the brass key.

The second light turned green.

“Numbers.”

Emma recited her six digits.

Lydia followed with five correct numbers.

She looked at Emma.

Two slow blinks.

One fast blink.

Emma understood.

The final number was not spoken.

It was sung.

Their father’s piano melody ended on a note neither twin ever named aloud.

They both hummed it at the same time.

The console activated.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Gareth smiled.

Then a new message appeared.

TRUST PROTECTION MODE.

A steel door sealed the tower stairs.

Every screen began uploading files to federal servers.

Daniel had designed the system so forced access released evidence rather than money.

Photographs of Cedar Ridge patients appeared.

Financial records followed.

Videos showed Gareth beating other victims, Cole accepting cash, and private attorneys preparing false guardianship orders.

Gareth stared at the screens.

“What did you do?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I remembered everything.”

Cole aimed his gun at the server.

Daniel pressed a button beneath the wheelchair armrest.

The floor panel opened.

Cole lost his balance and fell into the narrow maintenance shaft.

His gun struck the stone below.

Gareth dragged Lydia toward the lake window.

“Stop the upload.”

“I cannot,” Emma said.

“You opened it.”

“Dad did.”

Federal agents pounded against the sealed stairwell door.

Gareth looked at Daniel.

Years of control disappeared from his face.

Only panic remained.

He raised the gun toward the man he had failed to kill twice.

Lydia drove the back of her head into Gareth’s mouth.

Emma lunged.

The gun fired.

Glass shattered.

Gareth fell against the open window, still gripping Lydia’s blue sleeve.

Emma caught her sister’s hand.

Gareth hung outside the tower with one hand around Lydia’s wrist.

“Help me,” Lydia cried.

Emma pulled.

Her injured wrist screamed.

Daniel tried to move his wheelchair closer.

Gareth looked up at Emma.

“If I fall, she falls with me.”

Rachel appeared at the top of the stairs holding Cole’s dropped gun.

Her wounded arm shook.

Gareth stared at his wife.

“You will not shoot me.”

Rachel’s eyes moved toward her daughters.

“No.”

She fired at his hand.

Gareth released Lydia.

Emma pulled her sister across the floor as he disappeared into the rain.

They never heard him strike the ground.

Federal agents entered seconds later.

The ledge below was empty.

Only blood marked the stones leading toward the lake.

Continue to the next part: Gareth vanishes into the water while Daniel reveals the final recording names the person who created Cedar Ridge.
