Chapter 10 - The Empty Bed at Cedar Ridge

Three days later, Emma and Lydia occupied beds beside each other in a secure hospital wing.
Lydia’s ribs were healing. The swelling around Emma’s wrist had begun to decrease. Both girls woke whenever doors opened too quickly.
Rachel survived the gunshot.
She remained under police guard in another section of the hospital.
Prosecutors charged her with child endangerment, evidence concealment, fraud, and assisting Gareth after Daniel’s crash.
She agreed to testify.
Emma did not know whether she would ever forgive her.
Forgiveness felt like a question for people who were no longer trying to survive.
Detective Cole was pulled alive from the tower shaft. He suffered a broken leg and spinal injuries but remained conscious.
His first request was for an attorney.
Federal investigators recovered enough records from the trust server to reopen eighteen missing person cases connected to Cedar Ridge.
Gareth’s body was not found.
Divers searched Lake Mercer for two days.
They found blood on the rocks, a torn section of his shirt, and an underwater drainage passage leading beyond the reservoir.
Dr. Shaw visited the twins every morning.
She never entered without knocking.
That small act mattered more than she understood.
Daniel was treated in the neurological unit.
He remembered his daughters, the crash, and years inside Cedar Ridge. Some days he confused dates. Other days he described rooms, voices, and documents with perfect detail.
The twins saw him for short periods.
Their first conversation contained no grand explanations.
Daniel held Emma’s hand with his left hand and Lydia’s with his right.
“I tried to come home.”
“We know,” Lydia whispered.
“I should have told you about Gareth before the crash.”
“You did not know Mom would marry him,” Emma said.
“I knew he wanted the trust. I underestimated what he would do to reach it.”
The old music player rested on the table beside him.
Federal technicians had recovered every file except one.
The final folder required simultaneous voice identification from both twins.
Emma and Lydia spoke their names together.
The folder opened.
Daniel’s video appeared.
He had recorded it inside Cedar Ridge only six weeks earlier.
“If you are seeing this, the trust protection system worked.”
He looked over his shoulder before continuing.
“Gareth did not create Cedar Ridge. He inherited it from someone who understood how easily the law can turn imprisonment into protection.”
A series of names appeared.
Judges.
Doctors.
Attorneys.
Private guardians.
One name was missing, replaced by the title FOUNDER.
Daniel held up an old photograph.
It showed the Cedar Ridge staff at an opening ceremony twenty years earlier.
Gareth stood near the back as a young security employee.
Detective Cole stood beside him in uniform.
At the center was a woman wearing a white medical coat.
Her face had been torn from the photograph.
Daniel continued.
“The founder selected patients, controlled medication, and created medical histories that courts accepted without question.”
Dr. Shaw leaned closer to the screen.
She recognized the handwriting beneath the photograph.
It belonged to her father, Dr. Harold Shaw.
Amelia’s father had served on the state medical board until his death ten years earlier.
“He inspected Cedar Ridge,” she said.
Daniel shook his head on the recording as though answering her.
“Harold Shaw did not expose the facility. He protected it.”
Amelia stepped backward.
Emma watched her face.
The doctor who saved them had just learned her own father might have helped build the system that imprisoned Daniel.
The video continued.
“Amelia was never involved. Gareth feared her because she refused to change a medical report twelve years ago. What she did not know was that the boy in her photograph was not the first patient she treated from Cedar Ridge.”
An old hospital record appeared.
PATIENT: EMMA REED.
AGE: THREE.
Lydia looked at her twin.
“You were never treated there.”
Emma shook her head.
At three years old, she had spent two weeks in a hospital after a high fever. Rachel told her it was a children’s hospital in another state.
The file listed Cedar Ridge.
Another record appeared.
PATIENT: LYDIA REED.
AGE: THREE.
Both twins had been admitted.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Gareth began studying my daughters long before Rachel married him.”
The record included neurological tests, blood samples, and behavioral assessments.
At the bottom was a consent signature.
Not Rachel’s.
Not Daniel’s.
Dr. Amelia Shaw’s.
Amelia stared at it.
“I never signed this.”
The signature looked genuine.
Daniel continued.
“The founder did not only falsify medical records. She created replacements for people who might one day need to disappear.”
A current photograph appeared.
It showed two seventeen year old girls walking across a parking lot.
One was blonde.
One was brunette.
They looked exactly like Emma and Lydia.
The timestamp was from the previous morning.
Emma stopped breathing.
“That is not us.”
Dr. Shaw checked the background.
The photograph had been taken outside Cedar Ridge.
Federal agents returned to the abandoned facility immediately.
The twins watched the search through a secure video link.
Agents moved through the basement toward the room where Daniel had been held.
His old bed remained inside.
Beside it were two smaller beds covered with fresh blankets.
A nurse entered the camera frame.
“This room was occupied last night.”
“By whom?” an agent asked.
She lifted an identification bracelet from the floor.
The printed name was EMMA REED.
A second bracelet read LYDIA REED.
Dr. Shaw gripped the table.
“The records show they were admitted seventeen years ago.”
An agent opened a locked cabinet.
Inside were recent photographs of the twins sleeping, attending school, and entering the hospital.
Someone had watched them for years.
The final photograph showed Gareth beside the two identical girls from the parking lot.
On the back was a handwritten message.
THE ORIGINALS ARE READY.
A hospital alarm sounded.
Daniel’s room door opened.
A nurse rushed inside.
“Dr. Shaw, the twins’ mother is gone.”
Rachel had disappeared from the guarded ward.
Her officer was unconscious.
On Rachel’s pillow lay a small silver music player identical to Emma’s.
Its screen activated.
A live video appeared.
Rachel sat inside a moving vehicle.
Gareth drove beside her.
His face was bruised and cut, but he was alive.
Two girls sat in the back seat.
They had Emma’s and Lydia’s faces.
Rachel looked into the camera.
“I told you Gareth was not the person who began this.”
The vehicle turned toward an isolated medical complex.
A sign appeared beyond the windshield.
SHAW FAMILY NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE.
Dr. Amelia Shaw went pale.
The institute had been closed since her father’s death.
Gareth looked toward the camera and smiled.
“Bring Daniel to us.”
One of the identical girls leaned forward.
Her voice sounded exactly like Emma’s.
“Or we return the wrong twins to the hospital.”
The transmission ended.
A nurse shouted from the hallway.
Emma and Lydia’s beds were empty.
Dr. Shaw turned toward the open window.
Two sets of bare footprints led across the wet roof.
The real twins stood beside Daniel’s bed, staring at the empty room they had occupied only minutes earlier.
Then Lydia slowly looked at Emma.
“You have a scar behind your left ear.”
Emma touched it.
“So do you.”
“No,” Lydia whispered.
“I don’t.”
Daniel raised his head from the pillow.
His face filled with terror.
May you like
“Which one of you came home with me after Cedar Ridge?”
Continue to the next part: Emma and Lydia must prove which twins are real before Gareth uses the hidden medical files to replace them permanently.
