Chapter 5 - THE MUSIC BOX INSIDE THE GRAVE

My father had not been buried in an ordinary cemetery plot.
Walter Barrett rested inside a private family mausoleum outside Hartford.
He founded Barrett NeuroSystems forty years earlier and controlled the family even after illness removed him from daily operations.
The mausoleum required authorization from both surviving sons to open.
Graham refused.
“Meredith is lying.”
“She knew where Nora’s music box went.”
“She could have hidden it herself.”
“Then help me prove it.”
“You want to open Dad’s burial vault hours before Tanner’s birthday based on the word of a woman who poisoned him.”
“I want the audit key.”
Graham remained silent.
“If you block the vault,” I said, “I will include that decision in the criminal record.”
“You are threatening me.”
“I am documenting you.”
He arrived at the cemetery forty minutes later with his attorney.
Detective Monroe obtained an emergency preservation order. A funeral director opened the outer mausoleum while a forensic officer recorded everything.
My father’s casket had not been disturbed.
The stone compartment beneath it had.
A rectangular metal box rested behind a false panel.
Inside was Tanner’s wooden music box.
Nora gave it to him the day he was born. A silver moon turned above the lid when the melody played.
I wound the key.
No music came.
The inner cylinder had been replaced by a data module.
Graham looked genuinely surprised.
“I did not put that there.”
“Who had access to the mausoleum?”
“Family counsel. The funeral director. Meredith came once with Nora.”
“When?”
“Three weeks before Nora died.”
Nora had hidden the key herself.
Meredith later discovered the location and used it to manipulate us.
Maeve connected the data module to an isolated laptop.
A recording opened.
Nora appeared inside the mausoleum beside Walter Barrett’s casket.
“Tanner, if you are old enough to see this, I am sorry your birthday became a deadline.”
She explained that VANTAGE began as a legitimate system.
It analyzed changes in sleep, movement, and speech to help doctors recognize neurological distress in children who struggled to describe symptoms.
Walter Barrett supported the project after watching his youngest son suffer unexplained episodes as a child.
Graham glanced toward me.
I had experienced panic attacks and memory gaps when I was nine.
My parents called them night terrors.
Nora continued.
“Graham and Dr. Locke discovered investors valued the system more when its predictions appeared nearly perfect. SVX Nine allowed them to create a crisis after VANTAGE flagged a child.”
The software predicted nothing.
Executives selected a child, altered the data, administered the compound, and claimed the episode confirmed the algorithm.
Then another market appeared.
Families with contested trusts, custody disputes, or corporate inheritances paid Whitehaven to document psychiatric instability.
A temporary commitment could change guardianship, voting control, or access to money.
Twenty three children appeared in Nora’s original files.
The true number was likely larger.
“Why tie everything to Tanner’s birthday?” I whispered.
Maeve answered.
“Nora wanted him old enough to understand that the audit existed.”
The trust did not give Tanner the power to stop the release.
It allowed him to hear the truth at the same time as regulators.
Nora refused to make him responsible for deciding whether victims received justice.
The final section of the recording concerned Meredith.
“She entered the VANTAGE program at twenty four as a clinical liaison. She helped me collect early evidence, then began selling access to families seeking commitments.”
Meredith had not begun as Graham’s victim.
She had become his business partner.
Nora discovered that Meredith was altering patient profiles.
She intended to report her.
Meredith started dosing Nora.
Graham learned about the low doses but did not stop them because Nora’s confusion weakened her credibility.
“He allowed it,” I said.
Graham’s face tightened.
“That is not what she said.”
“She said you knew.”
“I knew Meredith claimed Nora was unstable. I did not know the cause until that final night.”
The recording continued as though Nora anticipated his defense.
“Graham will say he did not know enough. Lincoln may say the same. Both men benefited from not asking.”
The words entered the mausoleum without mercy.
Graham left the room.
His attorney followed.
At 11:42, we returned to the hospital with the key.
Tanner sat upright in bed wearing fresh pajamas.
The birthday countdown appeared on the secure trust screen.
Maeve inserted the music box module.
The audit began decrypting.
Files opened across three independent servers.
Patient names.
Medication logs.
Payments.
Court petitions.
Forged signatures.
Then a warning appeared.
EXTERNAL OVERRIDE ATTEMPT.
Someone inside Barrett NeuroSystems was trying to erase the raw data before transmission completed.
The access belonged to the company’s interim chair, Evelyn Barrett.
My mother.
She had lived in a private residence for six years after a stroke supposedly left her unable to manage her affairs.

Yet her biometric credentials were actively deleting files.
Continue to the next part: Lincoln discovers the mother he believed incapacitated has been controlling VANTAGE from behind the company’s board.
