Chapter 4 - THE AMBULANCE THAT DID NOT BELONG TO THE HOSPITAL

Security detained Dr. Miriam Locke inside the service elevator.

She carried no weapon.

She carried something more useful to the plan.

A sealed psychiatric transfer order.

The document stated that Tanner posed an immediate danger to himself and others. It authorized Whitehaven Behavioral Institute to remove him from St. Catherine’s before noon.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

So did the signature of Judge Arthur Bell.

Judge Bell’s clerk confirmed that no petition had been heard.

The judge had not signed anything.

A temporary case number had been entered into the state system through the account of a retired court administrator.

The order looked official enough that an ordinary hospital employee might have obeyed before verifying it.

Dr. Locke insisted she believed it was valid.

Detective Monroe placed Nora’s video in front of her.

“You knew SVX Nine produced artificial symptoms.”

“I knew the compound could create distress.”

“You signed reports calling those symptoms spontaneous psychosis.”

“The software identified risk factors.”

“The drug caused them.”

“Some children already displayed instability.”

Maeve stepped forward.

“You increased doses until their behavior matched VANTAGE.”

Dr. Locke looked at her former nurse.

“You were never qualified to interpret the research.”

“I was qualified to see children begging us not to give them another drink.”

The Whitehaven transfer ambulance arrived during the interview.

Two uniformed attendants entered the hospital carrying restraints and a portable sedative kit.

The admissions clerk saw the forged court order and directed them toward Tanner’s room.

Maeve recognized one of the men.

He had worked inside Whitehaven’s secure pediatric wing.

She activated the emergency alarm before they reached the door.

Hospital officers stopped them.

The restraints were adult sized.

The sedative had no patient label.

The ambulance contained a locked compartment with Tanner’s name written inside.

Graham watched the vehicle search from the corridor.

“This was not my plan.”

“You helped prepare the commitment,” I said.

“I intended a court supervised evaluation.”

“At the institution you controlled.”

“To delay the audit.”

“You were willing to call my child insane to protect your company.”

He did not deny it.

Dr. Locke’s phone contained messages from Meredith.

Lincoln is hesitating.

Use the emergency order if the home incident fails.

The final message had been sent after Meredith was taken into police custody.

PROCEED WITHOUT ME.

Meredith had scheduled the extraction before drugging Tanner.

She expected either my signature or the forged order to remove him.

Detective Monroe formally arrested her at the county interview center.

The assault video, the dark bottle, and the transfer messages eliminated her claim that she had made a medical mistake.

She requested an attorney and refused to discuss Nora.

Tanner’s condition improved throughout the day.

The hallucinations stopped.

His body remained exhausted, but doctors expected a full physical recovery.

He asked to see the commitment papers.

I hesitated.

Then I remembered every adult who had protected him through missing information.

I showed him the pages with a therapist present.

“Meredith wanted people to think I was crazy.”

“She wanted a legal record saying you could not make decisions.”

“Because of Mom’s shares?”

“Because your birthday activates an investigation.”

He looked toward Maeve.

“Did Mom hire you?”

Maeve took a long breath.

“Yes.”

Before Nora died, she contacted Maeve through an attorney.

Nora knew someone inside the house had been giving her SVX Nine.

She did not know whether Graham, Meredith, or another company executive controlled it.

She arranged for Maeve to apply as Tanner’s nurse if he ever showed similar symptoms.

“Why did you wait until three weeks ago?” I asked.

Maeve opened a sealed message on her phone.

The instructions activated when Tanner’s trust detected an unauthorized access attempt.

Meredith had tried to open the trust six weeks earlier.

Nora’s system then contacted Maeve.

“You entered our house without telling me who sent you.”

“I did not know whether you were involved.”

The answer hurt.

It was also reasonable.

My signature appeared on early VANTAGE approvals.

I had not read the underlying study reports, but my position made me part of the structure that allowed it.

Maeve had no reason to assume ignorance made me safe.

Tanner looked at me.

“Did you help them?”

“I signed funding renewals.”

“Did you know about the drops?”

“No.”

“Did you ask what the study did?”

I thought about the board summaries I approved in minutes.

“No.”

He stared at the commitment papers.

“Mom asked.”

“Yes.”

My son did not comfort me.

He should not have needed to.

At 6:00 that evening, Barrett NeuroSystems announced that Graham had placed himself on temporary leave.

The board appointed an interim chair.

Then it suspended me too.

A public statement claimed both Barrett brothers had conflicts of interest involving the VANTAGE investigation.

My access to company records ended immediately.

Graham called from the police interview center after being released pending further inquiry.

“The board is taking the company from both of us.”

“That may be appropriate.”

“You do not mean that.”

“I do.”

“The audit will destroy Barrett NeuroSystems.”

“If the company depends on poisoned children remaining silent, it should not survive unchanged.”

He disconnected.

Tanner’s birthday was six hours away.

Nora’s trust server began the final audit countdown.

Then the screen displayed an error.

SECOND AUTHENTICATION KEY MISSING.

Without it, the files would not release.

Nora’s instructions identified the key’s location.

TANNER’S FIRST MUSIC BOX.

The music box had disappeared from our home after Nora died.

Security footage showed Meredith carrying it to her car.

In custody, she finally agreed to speak.

“I gave it to Graham.”

Graham denied receiving it.

Meredith smiled through the interview room camera.

May you like

“Then ask him why it is inside your father’s grave.”

Continue to the next part: Lincoln must open his father’s sealed burial vault before midnight to recover the key Nora hid from the Barrett family.
