Chapter 22 - Sylvia’s Last Apology

Sylvia was seventy eight when heart failure began limiting her life.
Not immediately terminal.
Enough that stairs became difficult.
She lived in assisted senior apartment.
Chloe visited.
I did not.
Not my relationship.
Sylvia had a small box.
“Before you worry, nothing expensive.”
Inside:
The green dress photograph Lauren had worn at Thanksgiving?
No. That would be cruel. Better a piece of Chloe's belongings maybe wedding photo? Let's see.
Inside were Chloe and Marcus’s wedding photos.
Sylvia had kept.
She asked:
“Do you want any?”
Chloe looked.
One showed Peter still alive? Marcus marriage happened two years after Chloe bought house, Peter died six years earlier maybe maybe he died before marriage? Wait Peter died six years before Thanksgiving and Chloe married Marcus three years before? Timeline: Chloe 28, bought house 25, married Marcus maybe three years? Peter died six years earlier when Chloe 22. So no father at wedding. Fine.
Chloe chose one photo of herself with Eleanor.
No Marcus.
Sylvia nodded.
Then:
“I need to tell you something I never said properly.”
Chloe waited.
“I hated that house was yours.”
Not expected.
“Why?”
“Because Marcus lived somewhere a woman owned.”
There.
Sylvia’s old beliefs.
“I told myself it made him vulnerable.”
Then:
“When he promised me the house, I wanted to believe him because I wanted the world rearranged in a way that made sense to me.”
Chloe listened.
Then:
“I resented your career too.”
“Why?”
“You didn’t need him.”
That was the core.
Then:
“I thought wives should need.”
Chloe said:
“That’s sad.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I used Lauren because I thought she would admire him more.”
Sylvia cried.
“I never cared what Marcus needed. I cared what proved I raised a successful man.”
That distinction.
Then:
“I am sorry.”
Chloe took her hand.
First time in years.
“I forgive you.”
Sylvia cried.
Then:
“Can we be family?”
Chloe thought.
“We already are something.”
That was enough.
Sylvia died two years later after a stroke.
Marcus was with her.
Chloe visited hospital once.
I did not.
At funeral, Chloe attended.
Sat with Ethan.
Marcus across aisle.
No scene.
After service, he approached.
“Thank you for coming.”
“I came for Sylvia.”
“I know.”
Then:
“I’m glad.”
No hug.
Then Sylvia’s estate.
Modest.
She left Marcus most.
A small bequest to Chloe?
Maybe no, to avoid manipulation. She left one personal letter, no money. Good.
Letter:
I am leaving you no money because I spent too much of our relationship confusing money with meaning.
Then:
I hope that is finally the right choice.
Chloe laughed through tears.
She kept letter.
Then one old object.
The Thanksgiving table place card Sylvia had made with Lauren’s name? Too cruel. No.
Instead, Sylvia returned Chloe’s missing coat? That was evidence and probably returned long ago. Not.
Maybe her house key to Chloe's house, old and invalid. Sylvia had kept. She left it with note:
A key was never ownership.
Nice.
Chloe held brass key.
She asked:
“What do I do?”
“Trash?”
She smiled.
May you like
Then discarded.
No shrine.
