Chapter 13 - Chloe Says It in Court
Chloe wore a navy suit.
No dramatic white dress.
No visible attempt to look fragile.
She was still thinner than before.
Her rib had healed.
The concussion symptoms mostly gone.
She swore.
Then prosecutor asked:
“Why were you in Marcus’s study on Thanksgiving Eve?”
“Looking for a charger.”
“What did you find?”
“Documents with my engineering seal.”
Then affair.
The prosecutor did not linger.
Lauren mattered only because it contributed to confrontation.
Then:
“What did you tell Marcus?”
“That I was calling Atlas and Grayline.”
Then:
“What did Sylvia do?”
“Took my phone.”
“Did you consent?”
“No.”
“Did you ask for it back?”
“Yes.”
Then hallway.
Marcus blocked.
Chloe attempted past.
Sylvia grabbed her arm.
Chloe pushed Sylvia away.
Important.
Then Marcus shoved Chloe.
She fell backward into dining table edge.
Cut head.
Rib injured.
Then:
“What happened next?”
“I tried to leave.”
“Were you allowed?”
“No.”
“Sylvia locked front door.”
“Did you have another exit?”
“Kitchen door.”
“Marcus stood there.”
Then:
“What did they say?”
Marcus:
“Calm down and we can handle this.”
Sylvia:
“You are not destroying Marcus’s career because you’re jealous.”
Then:
“Did you receive medical care?”
“No.”
“Did you ask?”
“Yes.”
Marcus said:
“You’re fine.”
Then at around 3:50, he said:
“Get up.”
He drove her.
She asked for coat.
Sylvia refused.
Why?
“You’re not taking anything until we decide what’s yours.”
Her own coat.
Then shoe.
She lost while Marcus pulled her through mudroom.
He did not stop.
Then terminal.
“Did you ask him to leave you there?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
“Your mother can collect you.”
Then:
“By lunch everyone will know you’re unstable.”
Then he left.
Cross examination.
Defense:
“You pushed Sylvia.”
“Yes.”
“You were angry.”
“Yes.”
“You discovered affair.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened Marcus’s career.”
“I said I would report forged documents.”
“Did you shout?”
“Yes.”
“Did you knock over wine?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Could you have?”
“Yes.”
No perfection.
Then:
“Marcus says you fell when he intervened between you and Sylvia.”
“No.”
“You have concussion. Memory imperfect?”
“Some details, yes.”
Then:
“Could you be mistaken about shove?”
“No.”
Then:
“You were able to sit upright at terminal.”
“For a while.”
“You told guard your mother was coming.”
“Yes.”
“So Marcus did arrange someone to get you.”
“Thirty one minutes later.”
The prosecutor objected? She can say from knowledge maybe she learned later, but better not.
Defense:
“Did Marcus call ambulance?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“No phone.
Then:
“Did you walk from car to bench?”
“With him holding me.”
Then hidden phone.
Defense tried:
“Could Marcus have placed it safely to prevent you losing it?”
Chloe stared.
“He hid it in his locked study.”
Then:
“After telling everyone I took it.”
Strong.
Then prosecutor redirect.
“Why did you push Sylvia?”
“She had my phone and was blocking me.”
“Why did you want to leave?”
“Because my husband forged my professional seal and I had just discovered his affair.”
Then:
“Did you consent to being confined?”
“No.”
Done.
Marcus testified.
He claimed he pushed Chloe only after she “charged” Sylvia.
Why no hospital?
He thought bruise minor.
Why terminal?
Chloe demanded away.
Why no coat?
He forgot.
Why phone in study?
He found it later.
Why lie about location to Lauren?
“Private marital issue.”
Then prosecutor:
“Why tell Eleanor to pick up her garbage?”
Marcus closed eyes.
“Anger.”
Then:
“Why say Chloe was unstable before anyone asked?”
“Because she was.”
“What diagnosis?”
None.
Then verdict.
Not all counts.
Guilty of domestic assault.
Guilty unlawful restraint.
Guilty intimidation.
Guilty evidence tampering involving phone and cleaned scene.
A more serious kidnapping theory?
Not guilty.
The jury found confinement and forced transport but not all elements of higher charge beyond reasonable doubt.
Accuracy.
State sentencing would wait partly for federal resolution.
Chloe walked outside.
Reporters stood far away.
She said nothing.
Then Grayline called.
State engineering board had closed the disciplinary inquiry against her.
Finding:
No evidence Chloe authenticated or approved disputed certificates.
Her seal had been misused.
Chloe cried harder about that than the verdict.
Her career was hers again.

And Sylvia’s money trail was about to reveal one final secret Marcus had kept even from her.
