Chapter 9 - The Property beyond the Map

The sixth Sunrise property had no public address because it was never developed.
Thomas purchased the land through a sealed government auction thirty four years earlier. It covered two hundred acres in the mountains north of Los Angeles.
Official records described it as unusable conservation land.
Grace called it the north property.
Thomas called it the reserve.
The compass needle contained a microscopic engraving visible only beneath magnification.
Coordinates.
Vanessa had copied them before Dr. Mercer was arrested.
The property lock restricted legal transfers.
It could not stop someone from physically entering the land.
I traveled there with Miriam, state investigators, and a Hayes Meridian survey team.
An old service road ended near a concrete structure built into the mountainside.
Thomas had designed it before our company became successful.
The entrance opened with the brass compass key.
Vanessa had returned the key to the archive because she no longer needed it.
She had duplicated it.
Inside, we found a records vault, mineral surveys, and storage cabinets filled with original land certificates.
The property itself contained no hidden treasure.
Its value came from water.
Beneath the mountain sat one of the largest privately controlled groundwater reserves in the region.
Thomas kept it undeveloped because surrounding communities depended on the same underground system.
If a private company extracted aggressively, towns across the valley could lose wells.
Crown Meridian Capital had negotiated a secret sale to a multinational water company.
Purchase price: six hundred and forty million dollars.
Vanessa needed Sunrise control to complete it.
Victor’s mansion, parties, and company titles were never the true prize.
The property lock exposed the reserve during the audit.
Vanessa had provoked the sunrise order because she needed the sixth asset identified.
Thomas sealed it so completely that even she could not locate it through ordinary records.
My phone call revealed what she had spent years searching for.
The birthday assault was both real violence and a calculated trigger.
Victor had been her weapon.
I had been the key.
Investigators found fresh tire tracks near the underground reservoir access.
Vanessa had arrived before us.
Inside the control chamber, one valve stood open.
Water pressure data was being transmitted to Crown Meridian engineers.
She had begun proving the extraction capacity.
A screen displayed the proposed sale agreement.
Victor’s electronic signature appeared as Hayes Meridian heir.
Dr. Mercer signed as Sunrise beneficiary.
My signature had been copied as neutral steward.
The transaction was scheduled to close at sunrise the following morning.
The property lock should have prevented it.
Someone entered an override code.
Thomas’s personal code.
Only Miriam and I should have known it.
“I never had his personal code,” Miriam said.
“Neither did I.”
The control room camera showed Vanessa entering with an older man whose face remained hidden beneath a cap.
He typed the override without hesitation.
Vanessa called him Thomas.
The investigators replayed the audio.
“Thomas, the audit exposed everything,” she said.
The man answered quietly.
“That was always the purpose.”
His voice sounded distorted by age and equipment noise.
But the rhythm stopped me.
I had listened to that voice across breakfast tables, construction sites, and hospital rooms for forty years.
Thomas had died in front of doctors.
I identified his body.
I buried him.
The man in the recording moved like my husband.
Miriam saw it too.
“That cannot be him.”
The camera showed Vanessa handing him the broken compass casing.
He examined it with tenderness rather than greed.
Then he looked directly toward the lens.
“The sunrise order was never Eleanor’s weapon,” he said.
“It was mine.”
The recording ended.
Before we could trace their location, alarms sounded throughout the reserve.
The water sale documents began uploading to an external server.
A countdown appeared.

Continue to the next part: Eleanor must stop the sunrise closing while confronting evidence that the husband she buried may have designed the entire family collapse.
