Chapter 8 - The Heir Thomas Refused to Name

The hospital video had no sound after Thomas’s first sentence.
Someone deleted the audio track.
The image continued.
Vanessa placed the compass on his bedside table and showed him a document.
Thomas shook his head.
She leaned closer.
His heart monitor accelerated.
Then a nurse entered and Vanessa stepped away.
Seventeen minutes later, Thomas suffered the cardiac event that killed him.
The medical record listed no suspicious medication.
His blood samples had been destroyed after the legal retention period.
We could not prove Vanessa caused his death.
We could prove she lied about when she first met Victor and concealed her presence at the hospital.
The document she showed Thomas remained unidentified.
Miriam searched the founder’s archive scans copied by Vanessa.
One file contained a birth certificate for Caroline Reed’s daughter.
Name: Grace Reed.
Grace had been adopted at age two.
Her adoptive surname was Mercer.
Dr. Stephen Mercer was her son.
Vanessa was not Caroline’s granddaughter.
Dr. Mercer was Caroline’s grandson.
The psychiatrist who declared me incompetent controlled the strongest Sunrise inheritance claim.
Vanessa had used his lineage.
He had used her access to Victor.
Their partnership began before her marriage.
We presented the certificate to the court.
Dr. Mercer denied knowing about the adoption.
His financial records told another story.
Crown Meridian Capital paid him three million dollars over five years.
He signed false evaluations, accessed medical files, and helped Vanessa create the claim.
But the inheritance question remained.
If Grace Reed was alive, the shares belonged to her.
If she had died, they could pass to Mercer.
The adoption records listed Grace as deceased.
The death certificate came from a private care facility closed for fraud twelve years earlier.
No body had been independently identified.
Another convenient death.
Miriam found a pension payment still being issued under Grace’s Social Security number.
The deposits went to a residential clinic in Northern California.
Grace Reed Mercer might be alive.
Vanessa learned we had located the account.
She and Dr. Mercer left Los Angeles separately.
Police stopped Mercer at the airport with a forged passport and the compass needle hidden inside his luggage.
Vanessa disappeared.
The needle opened the final drawer in Thomas’s archive.
Inside were Grace’s original adoption papers, correspondence with Thomas, and a sealed statement signed by Caroline Reed.
Caroline acknowledged that Thomas was not Grace’s biological father.
She gave Thomas management authority over Sunrise because she trusted his ability to protect the land.
Her shares would pass to Grace, but control would remain with a neutral steward until Grace appeared personally.
Vanessa’s claim collapsed.
Dr. Mercer could inherit only after proving Grace’s death.
He had spent years preserving a false death certificate rather than finding his mother.
The neutral steward’s identity appeared on the final page.
Eleanor Hayes.
Thomas had given me legal control without telling me the full history.
He feared knowledge would make me a target.
His secrecy created the confusion Vanessa exploited.
The court restored the sunrise order under my authority and continued the property lock.
Victor’s occupancy remained suspended.
Vanessa’s asset accounts froze.
Police issued warrants for fraud, evidence theft, conspiracy, and her role in the assault setup.
I traveled with Miriam to the Northern California clinic.
Grace Mercer was seventy one.
She lived in a memory care unit under another name.
Her condition varied. Some days she remembered Caroline, Thomas, and the early land company.
Other days she believed she was twenty.
When I showed her the compass, she touched the broken glass.
“Thomas said Eleanor would bring this.”
“You knew my husband?”
“He visited every year.”
Thomas had paid for her care quietly.
He also told Grace that her son Stephen had become obsessed with the Sunrise inheritance.
She refused to give him control.
That was why Mercer created a false death certificate and isolated her under another identity.
“Where is Vanessa?” I asked.
Grace’s face changed.
“She came yesterday.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did she want?”
“The north property.”
“What north property?”
Grace pointed toward the compass.
“The needle does not point north. It points to what Thomas buried.”
A nurse entered carrying Grace’s empty medication tray.
“She should not have visitors,” the nurse said.
“Who authorized Vanessa yesterday?”
“No one named Vanessa signed in.”
The visitor log showed another name.
Eleanor Hayes.

Vanessa had entered using my identity.
Continue to the next part: Eleanor learns Vanessa stole more than the compass key and is heading toward the property Thomas removed from every company map.
