Chapter 22 - Sophie’s Question

Sophie was thirty when she asked Vanessa the question I had expected for years.
“If Grandma Diane had told you the truth from childhood, would you still have hated Rachel?”
Vanessa thought.
They were at my house.
First time Vanessa entered after decades.
I had invited.
Not old house.
My home.
“No,” she said.
Then corrected.
“Maybe. Sisters find reasons.”
Sophie laughed.
Good.
Then Vanessa:
“But probably not like I did.”
She explained.
Knowing Linda loved her.
Knowing Diane raised her without needing to erase Linda.
Knowing Robert provided estate.
Knowing Evelyn’s trust was separate.
If all named honestly, Vanessa could still feel hurt.
But not betrayed every time Rachel received something.
Then Sophie:
“So Grandma made you jealous.”
Vanessa:
“She fed it. I chose what I did with it.”
Good.
Then:
“Why didn’t you stop when Mia screamed?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I wanted Rachel to hurt.”
“That’s awful.”
“Yes.”
Sophie:
“Do you forgive yourself?”
Long silence.
“Some days.”
Then Sophie:
“I do.”
Vanessa looked up.
“For hurting Mia?”
“I forgive you as my mother. Mia decides her part.”
Wise.
Then Mia walked in carrying dessert.
“What part?”
Sophie:
“Nothing.”
Mia suspicious.
Vanessa did not force conversation.
Later Mia learned.
She said:
“I forgave years ago.”
Vanessa cried.
Mia held up hand.
“Do not make this a hug.”
Vanessa laughed through tears.
“Okay.”
Then:
“Can we be family?”
Mia:
“We already are. That didn’t stop you from hurting me.”
Powerful.
Vanessa nodded.
“Right.”
Family is not proof of safety.
Then dinner.
Pasta.
No fried chicken.
Not deliberate.
Maybe.
Halfway, Vanessa reached for serving dish.
Mia flinched almost invisibly.
Vanessa noticed.
She put dish down.
“Can you pass it?”
I did.
That was respect.
Then after dinner, Lucy spilled sauce.
Everyone froze for half second.
Lucy:
“Oops.”
We laughed.
Cleaned.
No one screamed.
Vanessa went bathroom and cried privately.
Sophie checked later.
Vanessa said:
“I’m okay.”
No making child comfort.
Then Helen looked around.
“Would Diane believe this?”
I said:
“She’d complain we used paper plates.”
Everyone laughed.
Mom returned as memory not threat.
Then estate planning transparency.
I gathered Mia and Sophie with attorney? Sophie is not direct heir maybe but specific trust. I did separate meetings to avoid comparison.
Mia knew.
Sophie knew.
No surprises.
No deathbed fight.
Then Vanessa said:
“Thank you.”
“For?”
“Not making Sophie wait for your death to know whether she matters.”
Again.
That was perhaps the true repair of Evelyn and Diane’s mistakes.
Not equal dollars.

Clear expectations.
No suspense used as love test.
