Chapter 15 - Diane’s Last Years

Diane did not return to old house after incarceration.
She sold it.
The dining room.
The safe.
The place where Mia was hurt.
Sold for $724,000.
Mortgage modest.
After expenses and remaining trust surcharge security, Diane kept personal proceeds.
No curse.
A young family bought.
I did not drive by.
Then Diane moved to a two bedroom condo.
She lived quietly.
Probation ended.
No new crime.
She sent Mia birthday cards only if I asked whether Mia wanted.
At nine Mia said no.
At eleven yes.
First card:
Happy birthday. I hope you choose whatever color dress makes you happy.
Mia rolled eyes.
“Grandma really stuck on dresses.”
We laughed.
Then Sophie.
At twelve she chose one meeting with Diane.
Eric attended.
I did not.
Later Sophie told me:
“Grandma said she made Mom think she had to win.”
“What did you say?”
“I said that was dumb.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you hug?”
“No.”
Later maybe.
Then Diane’s health.
At seventy two, she developed heart issues.
Nothing dramatic.
The independent trustee paid permitted medical needs.
Trust principal decreased somewhat.
I never objected.
It was for her first.
Some relatives whispered:
“Rachel should protect inheritance.”
I stopped them.
“It is her trust during her life under terms.”
Being remainder beneficiary did not mean wishing beneficiary spent less.
I refused to become mirror of Vanessa.
Then Diane asked to meet me again.
I agreed.
She looked frailer.
“I want to change will.”
“Not my business.”
“It includes Vanessa.”
“Good.”
She stared.
“You mean?”
“Your personal property is yours.”
She had expected fight.
“I’m leaving condo proceeds mostly to Vanessa and Sophie. Some to you.”
“Fine.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Then I said:
“You keep trying to make money prove motherhood.”
She looked down.
“Maybe.”
“Leave what you want. Stop calling it equality.”
That landed.
Her revised will:
Forty percent Vanessa.
Twenty percent Sophie directly/trust.
Twenty percent Rachel.
Twenty percent charities? Could be. But if 40 V, 20 S, 20 R, 20 charity. Fine.
Personal estate.
No trust.
I did not care.
Then she asked:
“Will you be there when I die?”
“No one knows.”
Not promise.
Then one day at seventy four she hospitalized.
Mia fifteen.
Sophie seventeen.
I brought Mia only because she chose.
Diane cried seeing.
“Can I hug?”
Mia thought.
“Yes.”
Short.
Then Diane said:
“I’m sorry.”
Mia:
“I know.”
Not forgiveness declaration.
Then:
“You look like Rachel.”
Mia smiled.
“I like that.”
Diane cried harder.
No more.
Diane recovered.
Lived another two years.
During those years she and I had occasional lunch.
Not mother daughter restored.
Limited.
She never entered my home.
Boundaries remained.
Then at seventy six, pneumonia.
This time terminal complications.
I went.
Helen.
Vanessa was still incarcerated? Nine-year sentence, served maybe seven? Timeline: Vanessa sentenced when 36, after 4 years meeting at40, Diane release after2.7, years later to 76 = 13 years after. Vanessa would have been released. We need handle ch16 maybe. Diane death after Vanessa release. Let's adjust: we'll cover Vanessa release next, then Diane death maybe ch18. So Chapter 15 can stop before Diane terminal at 74 maybe. Avoid contradiction.
Let's shift: Diane ages 63 at incident, served 2.7 to 66, several years. At 72 asks will. Fine. Not die yet. Vanessa sentence 9 years, could release after ~7 due credits at age43. So by Diane72, Vanessa is free. Need mention later. Fine.
