Chapter 19 - The Money We Stopped Counting

Selling Mercer Industrial did not make us rich enough to stop being human.
It did remove one of the weapons.
After transaction costs, company debt, taxes, and individual settlement obligations, my net proceeds were a little over $3.5 million.
Dad’s net was roughly $3 million.
Lenora’s around $1.6 million.
Brooke’s just over $1 million.
Numbers approximate after taxes/investments.
No secret account.
No hidden second valuation.
No one got a bonus for forgiveness.
Brooke looked at my number once.
“Still more.”
“Yes.”
Then laughed.
“Doesn’t bother me.”
That may have been biggest change.
Then I created a scholarship at local technical college in Evelyn Mercer’s name.
Not because tragedy required charity.
Because Mom believed skilled trades built everything.
Initial endowment $150,000.
Dad contributed $50,000.
Brooke $25,000.
Lenora $10,000.
No one required.
No names on levels.
One fund.
The scholarship went to machining, welding, industrial maintenance students.
No military preference.
No family story on website beyond:
Founded in memory of co-founder Evelyn Mercer.
Good.
Then Northline invited us to plant anniversary.
Brooke and I went.
Dad too before death maybe? Timeline sale year6, Dad alive many years. Could have all. But chapter after Dad/Lenora death? We jumped. Need chronological consistency: We placed Chapter17 after Daniel death and Chapter18 Lenora later. Chapter19 now after both. Northline anniversary could happen earlier but we can phrase "Years before Lenora's final illness, Northline..." This is a flashback; not ideal. Better avoid. Instead now, after both parents deceased, Northline marks 25th? Could still invite Claire/Brooke. Mercer Industrial founded decades prior; maybe 50th anniversary. Fine.
Brooke and I attend.
Founder wall:
Daniel Mercer.
Evelyn Mercer.
Dad’s photo.
Mom’s.
No Lenora because not founder.
No Brooke.
No Claire.
Correct.
Brooke stared.
“Mom would’ve hated not being up there.”
“Lenora?”
“Yes.”
I smiled.
“She eventually would’ve admitted it.”
“Maybe.”
Then plant manager said:
“Want see old offices?”
We did.
Brooke’s workstation gone.
Walls moved.
No trace forgery.
She stood where operations office used.
“I loved this place.”
“I know.”
“I was good.”
“You were.”
She looked at me.
“You never say that.”
“I did before.”
“When?”
“Maybe not enough.”
Truth.
Then:
“Does saying it now mean you think I deserved shares?”
“No.”
She laughed.
“Good.”
No need repeat old war.
Then a retired supervisor shook Brooke’s hand.
“You kept us running during 2020 supply mess.”
“Thanks.”
Then me:
“And you made us open books.”
He smiled.
No winners.
Different contributions.
Then after tour, Brooke said:
“I’m glad we sold.”
“Me too.”
The company remained functioning.
Mercer Division employed over one hundred people now.
Not family empire.
Better.
Then my retirement finances.
I did not hoard sale proceeds as trophy.
Invested.
Bought home.
Traveled.
Supported scholarship.
Helped charities.
Gave gifts to close people.
No children of my own.
No regret.
I had mentored younger Marines.
That was enough.
Then Brooke’s later health.
At seventy-three, after Thomas died, she developed ovarian cancer? White American, okay. Let's use pancreatic cancer? Harsh. Could be lung? She didn't smoke? not need. Let's choose lymphoma, treatable then relapse. We need eventual death. Maybe at 78.
She called.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“I need health proxy.”
My stomach tightened.
“Professional?”
“Doctor says person.”
“Your stepson?”
“He lives across country and I don’t want that burden.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
I thought of key.
Door.
Trust rooms.
“Do you have written directives?”
“Yes.”
“Independent lawyer?”
“Yes.”
“Then okay.”
She cried.
“Do not make it symbolic.”
I smiled.
“Rude.”
Then she said:
“I trust you with my life.”
I answered:
“Then make sure paper tells me what you want.”
Not sentiment.
Clarity.
That was how our family finally handled power.
And months later, when Brooke’s cancer stopped responding, I would have to honor a decision I desperately wished she had not made.
Chapter20: Brooke's death.
Let's craft.
Chapter21 maybe blueprint.
Chapter22 legal record.
Chapter23 old base house.
Chapter24 Claire final estate and storm.
May you like
Chapter25 exhaustive.
Let's proceed.
