Chapter 10 - My Father’s Answer

The mediator was Dr. Elaine Porter.

Neutral.

No company role.

No family connection.

Dad sat across from me in a plain conference room.

No military uniform.

No trench coat.

No Lenora.

He looked ten years older than six months earlier.

I asked my question immediately.

“When Brooke kicked me, why did you step behind Lenora?”

He looked down.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Brooke?”

“No.”

“Lenora?”

“Partly.”

“Of me?”

He raised eyes.

“Yes.”

I did not expect.

“Why?”

“Because I knew you were right.”

Silence.

He continued.

“If I stepped toward you, I had to admit everything I had done getting us there was wrong.”

That landed.

“So you stepped away.”

“Yes.”

“While she kicked me.”

“Yes.”

“Because stopping her would mean choosing.”

“Yes.”

I felt something settle.

Not better.

Clearer.

Then:

“Did you think I deserved it?”

He struggled.

“No.”

“Did you think I caused it?”

He closed eyes.

“At first, yes.”

There.

“I thought if you had signed yesterday none of us would be there.”

“Dad.”

“I know.”

“No, say what that means.”

He swallowed.

“I blamed your boundary for other people’s reaction to it.”

Exactly.

Then:

“You spent my whole childhood doing that.”

He stared.

“How?”

“When Lenora first came, if she was angry, I had to be nicer.”

“Yes.”

“When Brooke resented shares, I had to be generous.”

“Yes.”

“When I deployed, I was abandoning.”

“Yes.”

“When I said no to a buyout, I was selfish.”

“Yes.”

“You made keeping peace my job.”

“Yes.”

He cried.

“I am sorry.”

Then mother.

“Why keep her letter?”

“I hated it.”

I almost laughed.

“At first I read it every year.”

“Why?”

“Because it sounded like she knew I would fail.”

“She knew you.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“When I married Lenora, I stopped reading.”

“Why?”

“She said Evelyn still controlled us from grave.”

There.

“Did you believe?”

“Eventually.”

Then:

“Did Lenora hate Mom?”

“No. She hated competing with someone dead.”

Different.

Then shares.

Dad admitted:

He gifted Lenora and Brooke interests partly to make new family feel equal.

Not wrong itself.

His shares.

His choice.

But he expected me to sell some too.

When I refused, he viewed it as refusing new family.

He never said directly.

Instead let resentment.

Then:

“Did you know Brooke’s side company was overbilling?”

“I knew her fees were high.”

“Why approve?”

“She worked constantly.”

“Salary?”

“High already.”

“So?”

“I thought she deserved more.”

Mother’s letter:

Compensate work, do not take Claire inheritance to fix feeling.

He did not take my shares.

He simply let rules blur elsewhere.

Then:

“Did you know Lenora property advances?”

“Yes, generally.”

“Did you approve $275k?”

“Not formally all.”

“Why?”

“I trusted.”

He smiled bitterly.

“Funny word.”

Then night.

“Did you know forged signature?”

“I suspected around midnight.”

“Why didn’t call me?”

“Because if it was forged, deal dead.”

“So you tried to make me sign before I found out.”

“Yes.”

“That is helping cover forgery.”

“Yes.”

No criminal charge for forgery due evidence, but morally yes.

Then he said:

“I thought a real signature would turn fake one into paperwork mistake.”

“It wouldn’t.”

“I know.”

Then:

“Do you still love Lenora?”

“Yes.”

“Brooke?”

“Yes.”

“Me?”

He looked hurt.

“Yes.”

“Love didn’t stop you.”

“No.”

That was point.

Then I said:

“I forgive you.”

His whole face collapsed.

I raised hand.

“Do not confuse.”

He stopped.

“You are not coming to my home.”

“Okay.”

“You are not handling my company vote.”

“Okay.”

“You are not using my military access.”

“I can’t anyway.”

“Even after suspension.”

“Okay.”

“You do not get emergency key.”

“Okay.”

“You do not get to tell me Lenora or Brooke need me.”

He nodded.

Then:

“I will have relationship with you if you stop trying to manage who else belongs in it.”

“Yes.”

Forgiveness with borders.

Then he asked:

“Can I call once a week?”

“Once a month.”

He nodded.

That was where we began.

Then Brooke wrote from prison.

Not apology.

A question.

Dad says you forgave him. Does that mean you’re going to forgive me too?

I stared.

Then replied through mediator:

No one else’s forgiveness creates yours.

She received.

Two weeks later another letter arrived.

Then tell me what I have to do.

I did not answer.

May you like

Because forgiveness is not checklist someone completes to unlock you.

Brooke would have to learn that without instructions.
