Chapter 21 - Brandon’s Last Apology

At seventy, Brandon developed heart disease.
Not terminal yet.
He asked dinner.
“You’re not dying?”
“Not today.”
Good.
Then he said:
“I need apologize one last time.”
I groaned.
“You know rule.”
“I know. Not asking reassurance.”
Fine.
He continued:
“I apologized for deed.”
“Yes.”
“For Mom.”
“Yes.”
“But not for using your career against you.”
I paused.
“What?”
“I told everyone you abandoned family because you worked overseas.”
Yes.
“I needed that story.”
“Why?”
“If you were generous sister working hard for Mom, I had no moral excuse.”
There.
“So I turned your absence into selfishness.”
Yes.
“I’m sorry.”
I nodded.
“Accepted.”
Then:
“Do you know why Mom didn’t tell you?”
“Because tired.”
“Yes.”
“I made that worse. Every time she mentioned calling, I said you had enough.”
That hurt anew.
Not crime.
But coercive.
Then:
“I stole access before I stole signature.”
Powerful.
I sat back.
“Thank you for saying.”
Then no more.
He truly stopped apologizing.
We ate.
Years later, when his health worsened, I became emergency contact with consent.
Not financial manager.
He had professional fiduciary? He named accountant for finances and me healthcare backup.
He learned.
Then he asked:
“If I get confused, don't let me sign anything weird.”
I smiled sadly.
“We’ll follow plan.”
Independent.
Then:
“Do you think Mom would laugh?”
“Yes.”
He did.
Then Vanessa died at seventy-six? Timeline: Claire36, Vanessa38. Claire now maybe 68? Vanessa70. Need careful. If Claire 70, Vanessa72. Could later. Let's postpone.
Brandon at seventy? Claire66? Since Brandon 4 years older. If Brandon70, Claire66. Fine.
He lived to 78 maybe.
Before death, no need dramatic. We can have Chapter 23.
Then Claire perhaps not married/children. That's okay.
Need 4 chapters more 22-25.
May you like
Chapter22 maybe Vanessa's death/closure. 23 Brandon death. 24 final property/legal closure. 25 final.
Let's do.
