Chapter 7 - My Father’s Name on the Page

Victor read the handwritten note without visible reaction.
The line said:
V. Marlowe approved bridge movement through employee reserve.
The date matched a transfer made eight months earlier, when Hale Urban moved twenty million dollars from an employee pension account into a temporary construction reserve.
My father’s initials appeared beside the approval.
I had not seen that transaction during the acquisition audit because it was recorded as a repayment from Marlowe Crown.
“Did you authorize it?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did you know about it?”
“Not until the audit began.”
Dominic stood near the hospital door with Ellen and two security officers. He looked exhausted.
“My mother said the page proves your father was part of the transfer.”
“My mother says many things when money is trapped,” I replied.
He placed the envelope on the table.
“I brought it directly to you.”
“After speaking with her alone.”
“She called from her attorney’s office.”
“Why did she trust you with it?”
“Because she believes I can still persuade you.”
“Can you?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
At least he had learned one thing.
Victor requested the original Marlowe Crown payment record. The authorization used his executive certificate, but the approval time occurred while he was delivering a speech in Singapore.
The signature could have been delegated through his chief financial officer.
That officer was Anthony Mercer, the regional director who hired Melissa.
Anthony had entered the ballroom earlier pretending concern.
He held access to my office network.
He knew my card schedule.
He knew the North Harbor acquisition details.
Federal agents detained him at Marlowe Crown headquarters.
Anthony admitted creating the transfer but claimed Victor verbally authorized emergency support for Hale Urban to protect a joint development.
Victor remembered no such conversation.
Anthony produced a recording.
My father’s voice said, “Use the employee reserve if necessary. We will replace it after closing.”
The recording was generated.
Digital analysis found the same repeated breathing pattern used in the edited ballroom footage.
Meridian had been manufacturing executive authority for years.
Anthony knew the voice was false.
He accepted it because Adrian Grant offered him five million dollars and a future position after Meridian acquired Marlowe Crown.
He hired Melissa under her false identity.
He gave her access to executive event systems.
He helped duplicate my card.
When Hale Urban’s collapse created an opportunity, they built the wedding operation around it.
“What did Eleanor know?” Agent Ellis asked him.
“She knew Melissa could retrieve the audit file.”
“Did she know about the trust attack?”
“No. Adrian considered the Hales useful but unsophisticated.”
“Did Dominic know?”
Anthony looked toward my husband.
“He knew there would be a public accusation.”
“Nothing else?”
“He attended one planning dinner.”
Dominic’s face changed.
I stared at him.
“What dinner?”
“My mother asked me to meet Melissa and Anthony two weeks ago.”
“Why?”
“She said they were negotiating a wedding sponsorship and the North Harbor sale.”
“You knew Melissa worked with the company.”
“I knew she was hotel management.”
“You told police you barely knew her.”
“I did not know she was Meridian.”
“What was discussed?”
Dominic sat.
Anthony described the meeting.
Eleanor proposed creating a small disturbance during the reception to remove me from the ballroom. Chloe would claim the ring was missing. Dominic would persuade me to cooperate with a search. Melissa would retrieve the file.
Dominic objected to accusing me directly.
Then Eleanor said the ring would be found inside Amanda’s clutch within minutes and everyone would laugh.
He accepted.
He did not know they would plant the access card.
He did not know Chloe would tear the dress.
He did know my public humiliation had been scheduled.
“Why?” I asked.
“My mother said without the audit file, Hale Urban could negotiate honestly.”
“You believed stealing evidence created honesty?”
“I believed she wanted to see what the hotel had collected.”
“That is theft.”
“I did not think of it that way.”
“You are a corporate attorney.”
“I was trying to stop my family from losing everything.”
“So you offered them me.”
His eyes filled.
“I thought I could control it.”
Every person in the plan believed harm remained acceptable while they controlled the size.
Eleanor thought the accusation would last minutes.
Dominic thought the search would remain polite.
Anthony thought the pension money would be replaced.
Melissa thought a generated voice could become real authority.
Chloe thought tearing my dress would force submission rather than consequences.
Nobody accepted responsibility for the moment the plan became cruel because cruelty had existed inside it from the beginning.
I removed my wedding ring.
Dominic watched.
“Isabella.”
“I will not discuss divorce while I am in a hospital bed.”
“Then do not take it off.”
“I am taking it off because I need my body to stop carrying symbols chosen for other people’s comfort.”
I placed the ring inside the drawer.
The baby moved again.
Dominic looked toward my stomach.
“Can I at least know whether he is safe?”
“He is safe.”
“Can I come to the next appointment?”
“No.”
“I am his father.”
“And you helped create an attack against his mother while he was inside her.”
The words left him silent.
Victor dismissed everyone except Agent Ellis.
My father sat beside me.
“Anthony entered our company because I trusted his loyalty to Andrew.”
“Trust did not create his betrayal.”
“No, but I ignored warning signs because replacing him would have disrupted the acquisition schedule.”
“You chose comfort too.”
“Yes.”
The difference between Victor and Dominic was not that one never failed.
It was that my father could name the choice without immediately placing it somewhere else.
Agent Ellis received an alert.
Eleanor had attempted to leave the country through a private airport.
Federal officers stopped her.
Inside her luggage were insurance documents for Chloe’s ring.
The policy had been increased from one million dollars to four million three weeks before the wedding.
The beneficiary was a Hale Urban creditor.
The staged theft had two financial purposes.
Steal the audit.
Collect the insurance money.
If the ring were never recovered, the payout could cover one of Hale Urban’s overdue loans.
Amanda was supposed to place the ring inside a hotel vault after framing me.
Instead, she panicked and kept it in her clutch.
Chloe had known about the insurance.
Dominic claimed he had not.
A final document lay beneath the policy.
It was a prepared statement signed by Dominic.
My wife Isabella Reed admitted taking the ring during an emotional episode.

The signature was genuine.
Continue to the next part: Dominic must explain why he signed a confession in Isabella’s name before Chloe ever announced that the ring was missing.
