Chapter 6 - The Hearing They Prepared Before the Wedding

The emergency hearing took place inside a private courtroom connected to the hospital by secure video.

My doctor refused to release me because the contractions had returned during the night. I sat in a hospital chair wearing a simple blue robe while attorneys, trustees, and corporate representatives appeared on a wall screen.

Adrian Grant joined from federal detention through his lawyer.

Melissa had been arrested at the airport. She refused to speak.

Meridian argued that Marlowe Crown faced immediate instability because its executive vice chair had become involved in a violent family dispute during late pregnancy.

Their attorney played the edited ballroom recording.

My voice sounded sharp and threatening.

“I will destroy every one of you.”

I had never said those words.

The video showed me stepping toward Chloe after the purse search. It excluded the torn dress, the scratches on my shoulder, and Dominic’s refusal to help.

Dr. Stephen Hale submitted a written opinion that extreme emotional reactions during pregnancy could impair judgment.

He had never examined me.

Eleanor provided a statement describing years of jealousy, secrecy, and resentment toward the Hale family.

Chloe claimed I had always hated her because she represented the social life I wanted but could never afford.

The lie would have been almost funny if they had not built it around an assault.

My father’s attorneys authenticated the original ballroom recordings.

The unedited footage played next.

Chloe grabbed my sleeve.

Eleanor pulled the dress.

Dominic told me to submit.

My purse hit the floor.

The access card appeared.

I called my father.

The contrast between the recordings was undeniable.

Meridian’s attorney argued that the physical assault did not prove I remained fit to manage corporate affairs.

Ellen answered.

“No. The financial record proves that.”

She presented three years of my executive decisions, risk reviews, hotel acquisitions, and emergency planning. My work had increased company value while reducing debt. Independent directors confirmed I had remained active throughout pregnancy.

The hospital physician testified that I was fully alert, capable, and medically stable enough to participate.

Then Rosa Mendoza, a senior digital analyst from Marlowe Crown, explained the video manipulation. The altered voice had been generated from interviews I gave at corporate conferences.

Meridian had used my public work to manufacture private instability.

The judge rejected the immediate incapacity request but ordered a full investigation into the forged spousal amendment and Meridian’s conduct.

My authority remained intact.

Dominic’s temporary request rights were suspended.

The hearing should have felt like victory.

Instead, the Hales issued a public statement outside the hotel.

Eleanor said her family had been deceived by a woman who concealed billions while pretending to live modestly.

Chloe appeared beside her in the wedding gown, now without the ring.

She cried while describing the reception as an attack orchestrated by the Marlowes to destroy Hale Urban before a business negotiation.

Dominic did not stand with them.

He also did not stand with me.

Reporters found him leaving a private attorney’s office alone.

When asked whether he supported his wife, he said, “I need time to understand what was hidden from me.”

He spoke as though my private wealth were equal to his family’s fraud.

Sarah Lang, my communications director, asked whether I wanted to respond publicly.

“No.”

“Silence allows them to frame the story.”

“Then release the complete ballroom footage and the financial timeline. Do not release commentary about my marriage.”

I refused to turn private grief into corporate strategy.

Facts were enough.

By afternoon, public attention shifted.

Guests posted their own videos. Several had captured Chloe laughing while Eleanor held my torn dress. One showed Dominic watching without moving.

The ring in Amanda’s clutch became visible.

The edited Meridian version collapsed.

Hale Urban’s lenders froze several accounts.

Employees learned their pension money had been diverted. Dozens gathered outside company headquarters demanding answers.

Eleanor called me from an unknown number.

“You are destroying people who had nothing to do with the wedding.”

“The pension transfers happened before the wedding.”

“If North Harbor fails, thousands lose their jobs.”

“If the sale proceeds without the truth, employees lose the money you already took.”

“We intended to replace it.”

“With what?”

“The Marlowe purchase.”

She believed selling the company would refill the accounts before anyone noticed.

The wedding theft was an attempt to learn how much evidence we had and who had provided it.

“Did you know Melissa worked for Meridian?” I asked.

“No.”

“Did you know she planned to use the ring incident against my trust?”

“No.”

“Did you know Chloe was going to accuse me?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Dominic?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Chloe to tear my dress?”

“No.”

“Did you stop her?”

“I was trying to search you.”

The honesty arrived without shame.

Eleanor still believed the search had been justified because she thought power flowed away from me.

“You could have asked Dominic to speak with me.”

“You never behaved like family.”

“I spent three years at your holidays while you called me poor.”

“You let us believe it.”

“Your cruelty is not my responsibility because you chose the wrong victim.”

She breathed heavily into the phone.

Then her tone changed.

“Melissa still has something your father needs.”

“What?”

“The original North Harbor witness list.”

“The file was transmitted.”

“Not the handwritten page.”

Thomas Keller had added notes naming executives who knew about the pension fraud.

One name belonged to Marlowe Crown.

Someone inside my father’s company had helped Hale Urban move the funds.

Eleanor offered the page in exchange for stopping the federal pension referral.

I refused.

“You will send it to Agent Ellis.”

“Then Hale Urban dies.”

“Hale Urban may deserve to.”

“You sound exactly like your father.”

“No. My father would still be negotiating.”

Victor stood outside the room and heard the final line.

He entered after I ended the call.

“She is right,” he said.

“About what?”

“I would negotiate.”

“To protect the employees?”

“To learn who inside our company helped them.”

I showed him the recording of Eleanor’s call.

He listened twice.

The name on the handwritten page mattered because Marlowe Crown’s internal executive had access to my office, my schedule, and my original security card.

Melissa could not have built the plan alone.

The executive who helped Meridian remained inside our company.

Then the hospital security desk called.

Dominic had arrived carrying a sealed envelope.

He said Eleanor gave it to him.

Inside was the handwritten witness list.
