Chapter 12 - Vanessa Explains Herself
Vanessa testified.
Her lawyer probably wished she had not.
She began with caregiving.
Cooking.
Driving.
Medication.
Helping Dad after surgery.
Cleaning.
Appointments.
All partly true.
Then:
“He was difficult.”
She cried.
“He accused us constantly.”
Then VJM Family Care.
She claimed Dad agreed to pay.
“Where is agreement?”
She pointed to forged contract.
“Did Robert sign?”
“Yes.”
“Notary?”
“Not needed.”
Then durable POA.
She claimed Dad signed.
“What about Brenda Hall?”
“She came to house.”
Brenda testified she did not.
Vanessa suggested Brenda lied to protect her commission.
No evidence.
Then Evercrest.
“Daniel handled it.”
Messages showed Vanessa directing.
Then guardianship.
“I was afraid Robert would hurt someone.”
Then APS reports.
“Yes, I filed.”
“Why anonymous?”
“I didn’t want retaliation.”
Then bat night.
Dad was escalating.
Demanding keys.
Calling her thief.
Daniel brought bat “to secure it.”
Then Dad supposedly grabbed it.
She claimed he struck her shoulder.
No direct video.
Dad denied.
Daniel denied.
Audio contradicted.
Then she claimed station swing was a trauma response.
She saw the bat.
Panicked.
Did not remember aiming at Dad.
Video showed clearly enough.
Then cross.
“Mrs. Mercer, how much income did VJM Family Care earn outside Robert Hale?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Not much.”
“Amount?”
Records:
$1,200.
“And from Robert?”
Over $30,000.
Then signatures.
Metadata.
Copied images.
Fake notary.
Then messages.
Vanessa:
Need paper trail before hearing.
Police if necessary.
Then:
Bring bat inside.
Then Daniel:
He didn’t threaten you with it.
Vanessa:
Then he will.
“What did you mean?”
“I was angry.”
“Were you planning to make Robert hold it?”
“No.”
“Why bring it inside?”
“So he couldn’t access it.”
“From garage?”
“Yes.”
“Why not leave it in garage?”
No answer.
Then 911 timeline.
“You told dispatch he had the bat before Daniel brought it inside.”
“I was scared.”
“You told dispatch court needed documentation.”
“I knew guardianship was pending.”
“You said ‘this time.’”
Silence.
Then spreadsheet.
AFTER ROBERT PLACED.
“What does placed mean?”
“Care facility.”
“Had Robert agreed?”
“No.”
Then:
“Why list his assets?”
“Planning.”
“For whose benefit?”
“His.”
Then prosecutor read planned uses.
MERCER RIDGE RESTART.
NEW HOUSE.
VANESSA CARE COMPENSATION.
“You intended to use his assets to restart Daniel’s business.”
“We sacrificed our lives for him.”
There.
Entitlement.
The prosecutor waited.
“Did Robert ask you to sacrifice?”
Silence.
“No.”
“Did he ask you to move in?”
“He was lonely.”
“Did he ask you to take his money?”
“No.”
“Did he ask you to sell his land?”
“No.”
“Did he ask you to choose memory care?”
“No.”
Then:
“What exactly did he owe you?”
Vanessa stared.

For once, no answer came.
Because the answer was nothing she could put on a legal form.
