Defense began discovery.
They wanted my background.
Government moved protective order for classified service records irrelevant to shooting.
Barnes’s lawyer argued motive to fabricate:
Dennis Irwin was trained covert operator with grudge against sheriff after courthouse report.
Absurd.
But juries hear stories.
Prosecutor told me:
“Your history may come in limited.”
“I don’t want it.”
“I know.”
“They’ll turn this into special forces revenge.”
“We keep facts.”
I disclosed awards, rank, dates.
No mission detail unless judge ordered.
One old administrative inquiry surfaced.
Seventeen years earlier, I had disobeyed an operations timing order during a mission that ended with me carrying Harold Donnelly out of a damaged building.
Defense wanted portray me insubordinate, violent.
Reality:
I had delayed extraction to evacuate civilians and wounded personnel after command picture changed.
Inquiry cleared me of misconduct though noted communications deviation.
Harold laughed when attorney asked.
“Dennis got investigated because he refused to leave me behind.”
Judge limited.
The irony was perfect.
Barnes tried use past to make me look dangerous.
