Chapter 4 - The Woman Vivian Failed to Silence

Police vehicles entered Ward Mansion at four fifty six.

The ballroom had transformed completely.

White roses remained around the columns.

Crystal chandeliers still glowed.

But the orchestra had left.

The tables stood empty.

Investigators moved through the room photographing the hidden panel and collecting evidence.

Mara entered on a stretcher.

She refused to remain lying down.

A paramedic helped her sit upright before the board screens.

Sophie waited upstairs with a child specialist.

Caleb stood beside his wife.

He wanted to hold her hand.

He did not assume permission.

Mara reached for him first.

The pending transfer showed three minutes remaining.

Michael Grant appeared on screen.

“Mara, the system needs your biometric identification and cancellation phrase.”

She nodded.

The tablet scanned her face.

A red warning appeared.

Identity disputed.

Caleb looked toward Michael.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas had submitted a medical declaration claiming Mara was psychologically impaired.

The document stated that any cancellation attempt should be treated as coercion.

It carried the signature of Dr. Leonard Price, a physician employed by Vivian.

Mara stared at the screen.

“She prepared this before taking me.”

Vivian remained under guard near the staircase.

“I prepared for your instability.”

Caleb turned toward her.

Mara tightened her grip on his hand.

“Do not let her distract you.”

The board members demanded clarification.

Mara spoke directly to them.

“Eleven days ago, I discovered unauthorized transfers from the Ward Children’s Foundation.”

She explained the false contracts.

The meeting beneath the ballroom.

The staged disappearance.

The chain.

The forced demands for her passwords.

Vivian interrupted.

“She is repeating what Caleb told her.”

Mara looked toward the security chief.

“Play the footage from the ninth night.”

The recording showed Vivian entering the chamber alone.

Mara sat against the wall.

Vivian held several transfer documents.

“Authorize them,” she said.

“No.”

“You are making this harder than necessary.”

“You stole from sick children.”

“I invested family resources.”

“You will go to prison.”

Vivian leaned closer.

“Then Sophie grows up believing her mother abandoned her.”

The board watched in horror.

On the recording, Mara looked directly toward the camera.

“My daughter will know the truth.”

Vivian smiled.

“Only if you leave this room.”

The clip ended.

No one could claim Caleb created Mara’s story.

The evidence existed before her rescue.

Michael requested an immediate board override of the medical declaration.

The vote required a majority.

Several members voted yes.

Others hesitated.

Vivian had controlled them for years through donations, influence, and private favors.

The transfer timer showed ninety seconds.

Mara looked at the board.

“If you refuse because you fear Vivian, then you become part of what she did.”

One elderly board member slowly raised his hand.

“Override.”

Another followed.

Then another.

The system accepted the vote.

Mara’s identity status changed to verified.

“State the cancellation phrase,” Michael said.

She looked toward Caleb.

The phrase had been chosen years earlier when she joined the audit committee.

Caleb had once laughed at it because it sounded sentimental.

Now Mara spoke clearly.

“A child’s trust is never family property.”

The transfer froze with twenty three seconds remaining.

Thomas’s remote access disconnected.

Caleb closed his eyes in relief.

Then the security chief received an update.

Thomas had abandoned the office near the river.

Police found computers, passports, and cash.

He escaped through a rear exit before officers arrived.

One vehicle was missing.

A dark sedan registered to a Ward estate company.

Mara looked toward Caleb.

“He will come here.”

“Why?”

“He needs the original ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The one I hid before Vivian caught me.”

Vivian looked up sharply.

That reaction confirmed it.

Mara had discovered a handwritten account book documenting years of transfers.

She hid it somewhere inside Ward Mansion before meeting Vivian beneath the ballroom.

“Where?” Caleb asked.

Mara looked toward the grand staircase.

“Sophie’s room.”

Caleb’s blood turned cold.

Sophie was upstairs.

The security chief ordered every officer toward the second floor.

At that moment, the mansion lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the ballroom.

Emergency lights flickered red along the walls.

A gunshot was not heard.

No explosion.

Only the sound of a side door opening somewhere in the house.

Thomas had already returned.

Caleb activated his flashlight.

“Mara, stay with the officers.”

“No.”

“You can barely stand.”

“My daughter is upstairs.”

They moved together toward the staircase.

Vivian called from behind them.

“Thomas will not hurt Sophie.”

Caleb stopped.

“How do you know?”

Vivian looked terrified.

“He promised.”

Mara stared at her.

“You gave him access to the estate.”

Vivian began shaking.

“He was supposed to recover the ledger and leave.”

“You brought him near my daughter.”

“I did not know she was upstairs.”

Caleb’s expression became ice cold.

“You never know until someone else pays.”

He followed the security team upstairs.

Sophie’s bedroom door stood open.

The room was empty.

A white ribbon lay on the carpet.

Caleb picked it up.

His daughter had been taken.

Then a child’s voice came through the nursery monitor.

“Dad?”

Caleb looked toward the screen.

Sophie appeared inside the abandoned greenhouse behind the mansion.

Thomas stood behind her.

He held the original ledger.

The camera was transmitting live.

“Bring Vivian to the greenhouse,” he said.

“Or the Ward family loses another mother tonight.”

Continue to the next part: Caleb and Mara will confront Thomas inside the greenhouse, while Vivian must choose between protecting herself and saving the granddaughter she used as leverage.
