Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Called Imprisonment Protection

Caleb found Vivian inside the library.
The fireplace burned brightly.
Several documents had already curled into black ash.
Two security officers stood near the doors.
Vivian remained beside the desk with a glass of water in one hand.
Her emerald gown looked untouched.
Only her face had changed.
The confidence had disappeared.
Caleb entered alone.
“Where is Thomas?”
Vivian placed down the glass.
“I do not know.”
“He left through the service gate.”
“Then your security is incompetent.”
Caleb stared at his mother.
Even now, she reached for authority.
“You locked Mara beneath the ballroom.”
Vivian’s eyes shifted toward the doors.
“She has been unstable for months.”
“I watched the footage.”
“She entered voluntarily.”
“You rendered her unconscious.”
“Thomas handled that.”
The admission came too easily.
Vivian realized what she had said.
Caleb stepped closer.
“You knew.”
“I knew he needed to prevent her from leaving.”
“You chained my wife to a floor.”
“To protect everything your grandfather built.”
Caleb looked toward the burning papers.
“You stole from a children’s foundation.”
Vivian’s composure returned.
“I redirected funds into investments.”
“Private companies.”
“Companies that would eventually return more money to the foundation.”
“Mara discovered the truth.”
“Mara misunderstood complicated transactions.”
“So you staged her disappearance.”
Vivian’s jaw tightened.
“She gave me no choice.”
Caleb felt something inside him become cold.
Vivian had used that phrase throughout his childhood.
You gave me no choice.
Whenever punishment became cruel.
Whenever privacy became disobedience.
Whenever love required surrender.
He had spent years believing her control came from strength.
Now he saw it for what it was.
Fear of losing power.
“You had every choice,” he said.
“You chose to imprison her.”
Vivian looked toward the family portrait above the fireplace.
“You were prepared to ruin the Ward name for a woman who married into it.”
“She is my wife.”
“She was an outsider.”
“She is Sophie’s mother.”
“She was going to send me to prison.”
“You sent yourself there.”
Vivian’s expression cracked.
“You cannot allow that.”
Caleb stared at her.
“You threatened my daughter.”
“I would never hurt Sophie.”
“You showed Mara recordings of her sleeping.”
“To make her cooperate.”
“You let Sophie believe her mother abandoned her.”
Vivian’s eyes filled, but the tears did not move Caleb.
“She needed stability.”
“She needed her mother.”
“She had me.”
“No.”
Caleb’s voice remained quiet.
“She had a grandmother who listened to her cry and continued serving champagne above the room where her mother was chained.”
Vivian flinched.
For the first time, shame appeared.
Only briefly.
Then survival replaced it.
“If I am arrested, the foundation collapses.”
“The foundation will survive without theft.”
“The board will turn on you.”
“I do not care.”
“You should.”
Vivian leaned closer.
“Thomas has access to Mara’s credentials.”
Caleb became still.
“What did you give him?”
“The authorization token.”
“Where is he going?”
Vivian smiled faintly.
“If I go to prison, you lose everything too.”
Caleb reached for his phone.
He called Michael Grant, the family’s independent attorney.
“Freeze every Ward Foundation account.”
Michael responded immediately.
“I need cause.”
“Fraud, kidnapping, unlawful confinement, and stolen authorization credentials.”
Silence.
Then Michael asked,
“Is Mara alive?”
“Yes.”
“Thank God.”
“Freeze everything.”
Michael began the emergency process.
Vivian laughed softly.
“You are too late.”
The final transfer had been scheduled for five that afternoon.
Caleb looked at the antique clock.
Four forty seven.
Thomas had thirteen minutes.
The security chief entered.
“We traced the service vehicle to a private office near the river.”
“How far?”
“Twenty minutes.”
Caleb looked toward the tablet on the desk.
The gala board meeting system allowed remote access.
He opened it.
Several board members were already waiting in the ballroom conference suite.
They believed Vivian would present the annual financial report.
Caleb activated the live connection.
His mother’s face appeared on the board screens.
Then his own.
“Good afternoon,” Caleb said.
“I am suspending tonight’s gala and requesting an emergency vote to remove Vivian Ward from all foundation authority.”
The board members began talking at once.
Vivian moved toward the tablet.
One security officer blocked her.
Caleb uploaded the first surveillance clip.
Vivian entering the underground chamber.
Mara collapsing.
The hidden panel closing.
The room on screen became silent.
Vivian stared at her son.
“You would show strangers private family footage?”
“You made kidnapping part of foundation business.”
Caleb presented the fraudulent contracts Mara discovered.
Several board members recognized their signatures had been copied.
The emergency vote began.
Vivian attempted to speak.
“Caleb is emotionally compromised.”
Michael Grant joined remotely.
“The foundation accounts are under temporary legal hold.”
A notification appeared.
One transfer request remained pending.
Twenty eight million dollars.
Authorized under Mara Ward’s credentials.
Caleb looked toward the screen.
“Can we stop it?”
Michael answered.
“Not without Mara’s biometric confirmation or proof the token was stolen.”
Mara was being transported to the hospital.
Caleb called the paramedic vehicle.
She answered weakly.
“What do you need?”
“Thomas is using your credentials.”
“I knew he would.”
“How do we block it?”
“My voice phrase.”
“What phrase?”
Mara hesitated.
“Not over the phone.”
There was too much risk of recording.
She asked the ambulance to turn around.
Caleb refused.
“You need medical treatment.”
“If the transfer completes, they erase the evidence and move the money overseas.”
“Mara.”
“I survived eleven days beneath that floor.”
Her voice became stronger.
“I will not let them win because I was too frightened to return.”
The ambulance headed back toward Ward Mansion with police escort.
Thomas had eight minutes.
Vivian watched the clock.
A strange calm returned to her face.
“You will lose.”
Caleb looked at her.
“No.”
He remembered Sophie pressing the hidden switch.
May you like
“You already did.”
Continue to the next part: Mara will return to stop the transfer, but Thomas has prepared one final deception designed to make the board believe she is acting under Caleb’s control.
