Chapter 3

No one in the living room spoke after the call ended.

The crackling fireplace suddenly seemed deafening.

Walter's bourbon glass remained suspended halfway to his lips.

Patricia's perfectly composed expression had begun to fracture.

Logan was the first to laugh.

It sounded forced.

"They're not sending the Army because of a family argument."

Jake didn't answer.

Instead, he knelt beside Hannah.

Her skin was still frighteningly cold.

Her lips had regained only a little color.

Owen stirred beneath the thermal blanket and let out a weak cry.

Jake brushed a trembling finger across his son's tiny hand.

"You're safe now."

The baby wrapped his fingers around Jake's index finger.

It was the first time father and son had ever touched.

Jake swallowed hard.

He had dreamed about this moment for months.

Not like this.

Never like this.

Hannah reached for his wrist.

"Jake..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"Take Owen upstairs."

"He needs warmth."

Jake nodded.

"So do you."

He slipped one arm beneath Hannah's knees and lifted her effortlessly into his arms.

His military field coat still covered both her and the baby.

Walter stepped into his path.

"You aren't taking her upstairs."

Jake stopped walking.

His face remained completely expressionless.

"Move."

Walter folded his arms.

"That room no longer belongs to you."

Jake looked directly into his father's eyes.

When he finally spoke, his voice was so calm that it unsettled everyone in the room.

"I'm giving you one chance."

"Move."

Walter didn't.

Jake shifted his weight slightly.

Years of military training had taught him exactly how to move another person without throwing a punch.

He simply stepped forward.

Walter stumbled backward instinctively.

Jake walked past him without another word.

For the first time in his life...

His father moved out of his way.

The master bedroom looked unfamiliar.

Almost everything Hannah had chosen was gone.

The quilt her grandmother had sewn...

Gone.

The family photographs...

Gone.

Even Owen's crib had disappeared.

Only the outline remained on the carpet where it had once stood.

Hannah saw it immediately.

"They..."

Her voice broke.

"They sold it."

Jake closed his eyes.

The crib had been handmade by Hannah's father before he passed away.

It couldn't be replaced.

He carefully laid Hannah on the bed.

Then wrapped additional blankets around her and Owen.

"I'm locking the door."

She grabbed his hand.

"Don't leave."

"I'm not."

He kissed her forehead.

"I'm just making one more call."

Jake locked the bedroom door.

Outside, he could hear Logan shouting downstairs.

Walter barked orders.

Patricia insisted they needed lawyers.

Jake ignored every word.

He looked around the room carefully.

Years of military deployments had made him notice details other people missed.

Something above the bedroom door caught his attention.

A tiny pinhole hidden inside the smoke detector.

He frowned.

That wasn't there before.

He stepped onto a chair.

Unscrewed the detector.

Behind it...

A miniature camera.

Still recording.

Jake stared at it for several seconds.

Then looked around the bedroom again.

Another tiny lens.

This one hidden inside a digital clock.

He opened the closet.

A third camera.

Pointing directly toward where the bed had once been.

His blood ran cold.

He carried all three devices downstairs.

Walter looked up.

"What are you doing?"

Jake placed the cameras on the coffee table one by one.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Patricia's face turned completely white.

Logan stopped smiling.

Jake finally spoke.

"Who installed these?"

Silence.

Walter recovered first.

"They're security cameras."

Jake picked one up.

"No."

He turned it around.

"This isn't connected to a security system."

He removed the memory card.

"It's a standalone recording device."

No one answered.

Jake looked at Patricia.

"You recorded our bedroom?"

Her lips trembled.

"We..."

She couldn't finish.

Jake's eyes narrowed.

"You watched us."

Walter interrupted angrily.

"It's our house!"

Jake slammed the camera onto the coffee table.

The sharp crack echoed through the room.

"For eleven months..."

He pointed upstairs.

"My wife thought she was living safely in her own home."

He pointed at the hidden camera.

"And you secretly recorded her?"

Patricia finally snapped.

"We had every right!"

Jake stared.

"What right?"

"To know what happened inside our own property!"

"Our property?"

Jake laughed once.

A cold, humorless laugh.

"So that's why you wanted the house."

Walter remained silent.

Jake understood.

The cameras had never been about security.

They'd been gathering information.

Watching Hannah.

Watching Owen.

Watching everything.

The satellite phone vibrated.

Jake answered immediately.

"Major Hayes."

Her voice remained calm.

"Sergeant Carter."

"We've confirmed something."

Jake listened.

"The signatures on the power of attorney don't match your military records."

He wasn't surprised.

"They're forged?"

"Yes."

She paused.

"And that's not all."

Jake's expression hardened.

"What else?"

"We contacted the county recorder's office."

Another pause.

"The deed transferring your property..."

"...was filed three days after you were deployed overseas."

Jake looked slowly toward Walter.

"You couldn't have signed it."

Major Hayes continued.

"Because according to military flight logs..."

"...you were in another country."

Silence filled the room.

Walter's shoulders sank.

Patricia closed her eyes.

Logan quietly backed toward the hallway.

Jake ended the call.

Then looked at his family.

"You didn't just betray me."

He picked up the forged deed.

"You committed fraud."

He lifted one of the hidden cameras.

"You invaded my family's privacy."

Finally, he held up the custody petition.

"And you tried to take my son."

At that exact moment—

Red and blue emergency lights flashed across the snow outside.

Multiple vehicles turned into the driveway.

The front doorbell rang once.

Then came three firm knocks.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

A commanding voice echoed through the house.

"El Paso County Sheriff's Office!"

"Open the door!"

Walter's face lost all color.

Patricia's knees nearly gave out.

Logan whispered the first honest words he'd spoken all day.

May you like

"...Dad."

"...I think we're in serious trouble."
