Chapter 2

For a long moment, no one moved.

The only sound came from the wind pounding against the windows.

Jake stood in the center of the living room with Hannah cradled against his chest and Owen tucked safely beneath his military field coat. Snow melted from his boots, leaving dark puddles across the polished hardwood floor.

Walter looked at the water with irritation.

"You're ruining the floors."

Jake slowly turned toward him.

"The floors?"

His voice was almost calm.

"My wife was freezing to death on your front porch."

Walter shrugged.

"That was her decision."

Hannah weakly shook her head.

"No..."

Her voice was barely more than a whisper.

"I begged..."

She struggled to breathe.

"...I begged them to let Owen stay inside."

Jake felt her body shiver violently.

He looked at Patricia.

She still wore Hannah's cream cashmere robe.

Not only had she thrown Hannah out—

She had taken her clothes.

Jake's jaw tightened.

"You took her robe."

Patricia folded her arms.

"You left it behind."

"It was still hanging in our bedroom."

"Our bedroom?"

Patricia smiled coldly.

"It stopped being yours weeks ago."

Jake looked around the living room.

Something was wrong.

Not just emotionally.

Physically.

Family photographs had disappeared.

The framed picture from their wedding was gone.

The photo of Hannah holding newborn Owen outside the hospital was gone.

Even the little ceramic ornament Skylar—Hannah's young niece—had made for Christmas years ago had vanished from the fireplace mantel.

Everything that proved Hannah had ever lived here...

...had disappeared.

In their place stood expensive decorations Patricia preferred.

The house looked staged.

Almost like someone had erased an entire family.

"What happened here?"

Walter calmly placed his bourbon on the table.

"You've been deployed almost a year."

"So?"

"We assumed you weren't coming back."

Jake stared.

"You assumed..."

Walter interrupted.

"Military marriages rarely last."

Patricia nodded in agreement.

"Hannah couldn't maintain this property."

"So we helped."

Jake looked toward the staircase.

"Our bedroom."

Patricia answered immediately.

"It's ours now."

Jake laughed.

It wasn't amusement.

It was disbelief.

"You moved into my bedroom?"

"It made more sense than leaving the master suite empty."

Logan stood and stretched.

"You know what's funny?"

Jake didn't answer.

"You always acted like the responsible son."

He picked up the framed property deed from the coffee table.

"But you signed everything away."

Jake frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Logan held up the document.

"There it is."

Walter smiled for the first time.

"Power of Attorney."

Jake's stomach dropped.

Power of Attorney?

He had signed a limited military deployment authorization before leaving overseas.

It allowed Hannah to handle routine banking while he was deployed if emergencies arose.

Nothing more.

He stepped closer.

"Let me see it."

Logan pulled the papers back.

"No."

Walter answered instead.

"Your mother handled everything legally."

Jake turned toward Patricia.

"What exactly did you do?"

She looked almost offended.

"We protected the family assets."

Jake's voice hardened.

"My family assets?"

"Exactly."

"They've always belonged to the Carter family."

Jake slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They belong to Hannah and me."

Walter stepped closer.

"You wouldn't even own this house without our help."

Jake's eyes narrowed.

"What help?"

Silence.

Just for a second.

It was enough.

Someone was lying.

Hannah weakly touched Jake's sleeve.

"They..."

She swallowed painfully.

"They kept bringing papers."

"What papers?"

"I wouldn't sign them."

"They said..."

She looked toward Walter.

"...they said if I loved you..."

"...I'd stop asking questions."

Jake looked back at his father.

"What papers?"

Walter remained silent.

Patricia answered.

"Mortgage restructuring."

Jake frowned.

"There isn't a mortgage."

No one spoke.

Jake felt his pulse quicken.

"There isn't..."

He repeated more slowly.

"...a mortgage."

Logan looked away.

Jake understood immediately.

The documents on the coffee table.

The bank statements.

The deed.

The custody petition.

None of it belonged together.

Unless...

Someone had created debt that never existed.

Jake carefully lowered Hannah onto the nearest armchair beside the fireplace.

She protested immediately.

"No..."

"I don't want Owen near them."

"He won't be."

Jake gently kissed Owen's forehead.

"I promise."

He removed a small thermal blanket from his duffel bag and wrapped it around both of them before turning back toward his parents.

Every movement remained calm.

Controlled.

Exactly the way his commanding officer had taught him years ago.

Never let the angriest person control the room.

Be the calmest.

Jake looked directly at Walter.

"I'll ask one more time."

"What did you forge?"

Walter's expression finally changed.

Not fear.

Annoyance.

"You've become dramatic."

Jake took another step.

"What."

"Did."

"You."

"Forge?"

Logan suddenly laughed.

"You really don't know."

Patricia shot him a warning glance.

Too late.

"What don't I know?"

Logan shrugged.

"Mom figured if Hannah refused to sell..."

"...we'd just become her legal representatives."

Jake felt the room spin.

Legal representatives?

Walter immediately snapped.

"Enough."

But Logan was enjoying himself.

"It's actually kind of brilliant."

Jake's fists clenched.

"Explain."

Logan grinned.

"We convinced the bank your deployment made it impossible for you to manage the property."

Jake's heartbeat slowed.

Dangerously slow.

"And?"

"We submitted updated financial documents."

"And?"

"A few signatures."

Jake stared.

"Mine?"

Logan smiled.

"Close enough."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Jake didn't shout.

He didn't throw a punch.

He didn't even blink.

Instead, he reached into the side pocket of his military duffel bag.

Walter frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Jake ignored him.

He removed a black military-issued satellite phone.

Logan laughed again.

"What are you going to do?"

Jake powered it on.

Its encrypted startup tone echoed quietly through the room.

Patricia suddenly looked nervous.

Walter's confidence wavered for the first time.

Jake calmly scrolled through the contact list.

One name.

MAJOR REBECCA HAYES
JAG CORPS

He pressed CALL.

The line connected almost immediately.

A composed female voice answered.

"Major Hayes."

Jake never looked away from his family.

"This is Staff Sergeant Jake Carter."

A brief pause.

"Sergeant Carter. Welcome home."

Jake's voice was perfectly steady.

"My family forged legal documents..."

He glanced toward the custody petition.

"...stole my home..."

Then toward Hannah holding Owen tightly.

"...and I believe they attempted to take custody of my son."

The silence on the other end lasted only two seconds.

Then Major Hayes spoke with unmistakable authority.

"Do not leave that house."

"I'm notifying military investigators, the county sheriff, and federal authorities."

"Sergeant..."

Her voice hardened.

"Whatever they're hiding..."

"...they're about to lose it."

Jake slowly lowered the satellite phone.

Walter's hand, still holding the bourbon glass, began to tremble.

For the first time all day...

May you like

The Carter family realized Jake hadn't come home alone.

He had come home with the full protection of the United States Army.
