Chapter 8 - The Son They Chose

David refused to believe Nora.

He said she wanted to destroy the family because Patricia and Robert had rejected her.

Then Detective Reed showed him the original hospital records.

David’s birth certificate had been amended when he was fourteen months old.

His first name remained David.

His original surname was Lane.

His biological mother was Rachel Lane.

His father was not listed.

Rachel lost custody after a court evaluator reported that she experienced paranoid episodes and endangered her child during a family visit.

The evaluator was Julia Sloane.

The photographs used in court showed Rachel shouting, pulling David away from an older couple, and striking a man’s hand.

The original photographs recovered from Nora’s storage unit showed the beginning.

The older man blocked Rachel’s path.

The woman tried to take David.

Rachel struck the hand reaching into the stroller.

Robert and Patricia later adopted him through a private placement.

They never told him.

Patient One was the case that proved Julia’s method worked.

Robert gained a son.

Julia gained a business model.

Rachel Lane disappeared after losing her final appeal.

Public records said she died in a shelter fire.

No body was identified.

Another uncertain death.

David sat inside the interview room staring at the documents.

“My parents wanted a boy.”

“They wanted an heir,” Detective Reed said.

“They loved me.”

“Love and wrongful removal can both be true.”

David looked toward me.

“You believe this?”

“I believe the records need independent confirmation.”

“You always wanted to be the real child.”

“No.”

The accusation came from years of Patricia comparing us.

David received praise for arriving.

I received criticism for taking space.

We had both been trained to see family as a competition.

“I wanted them to stop hurting my daughter.”

“You are using Nora to take everything.”

“There should be nothing to take if the trust belongs to Lily.”

David covered his face.

“If Rachel is alive, what happens to me?”

“You are thirty five. No one removes you from your life.”

“What if she wants me?”

“You decide what relationship you have.”

He lowered his hands.

“That is not how this family works.”

“No. It is how it should.”

The court held an emergency child safety hearing three weeks after the party.

Lily remained with me under hospital and advocate supervision.

Madison remained in temporary independent placement with regular protected contact with Karen.

David’s contact depended on cooperation and further evaluation.

Patricia and Robert requested access to both girls.

They claimed the allegations came from Nora, a mentally unstable woman who resented the family.

Their attorneys described the birthday injury as an operation performed by a rogue photographer.

The bunny audio prevented them from separating themselves.

Robert counted photographs.

Patricia administered medication and held Lily.

Both prepared the guardianship petition.

Judge Elaine Brooks listened to the original recording inside a closed hearing because Lily’s voice should not become public entertainment.

No one moved while the muffled scream played.

Patricia began crying.

The judge stopped the audio.

“These tears arrive after the recording,” she said. “The child’s tears arrived during your choices.”

Patricia claimed Julia threatened Madison.

The judge asked when she contacted police.

She had not.

When she warned Karen.

She had not.

When she stopped the assault.

She had not.

Fear could explain part of her conduct.

It did not transform inaction into protection.

Robert argued that Lily’s trust required experienced management and that I had become unstable after Michael’s death.

My financial records showed every trust expense had been independently approved.

His prepared investment documents directed millions toward David’s company.

The judge froze all family access to Lily’s assets and appointed an outside fiduciary for review.

I retained parental medical and personal authority.

Money would no longer be used as evidence that one relative loved Lily more.

The court suspended Patricia and Robert’s contact with both girls.

David’s future contact with Madison required individual review.

Karen received expanded protected time after admitting her silence, providing evidence, and accepting oversight.

No final custody judgment had been made.

The immediate danger changed.

The criminal investigation continued separately.

Judge Brooks also ordered review of every case involving Julia Sloane, her company, Robert, Patricia, and the hidden evaluation room.

That order threatened people far beyond our family.

Within hours, the court received an anonymous package.

Inside was the black case Nora had carried from the birthday party.

The original photographs of Lily were preserved.

So were documents linking Julia to judges, physicians, attorneys, and private guardianship companies.

One file concerned Michael’s fatal collision.

The crash investigator had received photographs showing his vehicle crossing the center line.

Original traffic footage showed another vehicle forcing him toward the barrier.

The second vehicle belonged to Julia Sloane.

Michael’s death may not have been an accident.

The final image captured the driver.

A woman with a facial scar and dark hair.

Not Nora.

Not the public Julia.

Karen recognized her from a private custody session.

“That is Rachel Lane.”

David’s biological mother may have been alive and working inside the system that took him.

Nora’s attorney requested another protected call.

Nora looked terrified.

“Rachel did not kill Michael.”

“The photograph places her in the car.”

“Julia made her drive.”

“Where is Julia?”

“At Saint Catherine.”

“Which Saint Catherine?”

“The original infant facility never closed. It moved underground.”

“What does Julia want from Lily?”

“The bunny.”

“The key and recorder are already with police.”

“Not that part.”

Michael modified the stuffed bunny before his death.

The brass key and recorder were distractions.

A second object remained inside the toy.

Something so small that the first evidence examination missed it.

Lily had never allowed technicians to cut the bunny open completely.

She slept with it in the hospital.

Nora said Michael hid the master access device inside its heart.

The device could unlock every original photograph Julia stored.

The entire network had been searching for it.

Continue to the next part: The true device hidden inside Lily’s bunny can unlock the evidence archive Julia has spent years trying to recover.
