Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Borrowed a Dead Name
Julia Sloane died inside a private photography studio two years earlier.
The official cause was carbon monoxide exposure from a faulty heater.
The studio belonged to Robert through a property company.
Nora found the body.
At least, that was what David claimed.
Robert helped conceal Nora’s identity because Julia’s court contracts were valuable. Nora resembled Julia from a distance and understood the evidence system better than anyone else.
She began attending selected assignments under Julia’s name.
Voice synthesis allowed her to conduct calls and recorded evaluations without appearing publicly.
The court continued accepting reports from a dead woman.
Robert received payment.
Patricia controlled family clients.
Nora remained hidden.
“Why would Nora help them?” I asked.
“Because Dad said you replaced her.”
“I was born years after she disappeared.”
“He told her Mom chose to keep you after giving her away.”
My parents had turned sisters into rivals before we met.
Nora believed Patricia surrendered her because of medical complications, then created another daughter to replace her.
Robert later promised Nora part of the estate if she worked for the family and remained legally dead.
An alive Nora could expose the false certificate.
A dead Nora could inherit nothing.
They kept her dependent on the people who erased her.
David said Michael found Nora through Julia’s studio.
He tried to persuade her to expose everything.
Nora refused at first.
She believed Michael wanted the family estate for Lily.
Then Julia died.
Nora suspected Robert caused it after Julia threatened to release client records.
She secretly began copying files.
Michael helped her hide the recorder and key inside Lily’s bunny.
They planned to contact investigators.
Michael died before the meeting.
Nora disappeared deeper into Julia’s identity.
“Did Dad cause Michael’s collision?” I asked.
David shook his head.
“I do not know.”
“You know enough to fear the answer.”
“Yes.”
David gave police an address for a storage facility Julia had used.
The unit was registered under Nora Lane.
Inside were hundreds of image folders.
Some belonged to wealthy families.
Others involved ordinary custody disputes where one relative had access to property, insurance, or a child’s settlement.
Original photographs and edited versions sat side by side.
The original images showed provocation.
The submitted images showed reaction.
A mother was photographed grabbing her daughter after Robert released an aggressive dog nearby.
The court version showed only the mother pulling the child violently.
A father was recorded shouting after Patricia withheld his son’s inhaler.
The submitted clip began after his voice rose.
A teenage girl was given medication before being filmed stumbling during a visitation exchange.
The evaluator called her intoxicated.
The system had harmed more families than Michael knew.
Nora’s notes appeared inside many folders.
Sometimes she documented the manipulation.
Sometimes she performed it.
Her role shifted between participant, prisoner, and secret archivist.
Understanding the coercion would matter.
It would not erase the children she helped injure.
The black case from the birthday party remained missing.
Then a video arrived at Detective Reed’s office.
Nora sat inside an empty room wearing the baseball cap from the rear yard footage.
A cut marked her forehead.
She looked enough like me that Lily’s description finally made sense.
“My name was Nora Hayes before Patricia and Robert sold that name to a dead infant.”
She placed the black case on the table.
“I have Lily’s photographs.”
Detective Reed asked through the secure connection:
“Where are you?”
“If I tell you, Robert’s people move first.”
“Robert is under investigation.”
“Robert has judges, evaluators, police officers, and private security clients.”
“Release the photographs.”
“I will release originals after Emily hears the first recording.”
The screen changed.
A younger Patricia sat inside a hospital room holding a newborn.
Robert stood beside her.
A nurse asked whether they understood the temporary medical transfer.
Patricia answered:
“We cannot raise a damaged child.”
The newborn was Nora.
Robert signed a form transferring her to Saint Catherine.
The agreement was supposed to last three months.
A second document converted the transfer into a private adoption.
Robert’s signature appeared again.
Patricia claimed she never signed the adoption.
Robert sold custody without telling her.
Years later, Patricia learned Nora lived.
Instead of reporting Robert, she joined the concealment to protect the marriage and family reputation.
Nora continued.
“Patricia did not give me away forever. Robert did. Patricia chose him after she learned.”
Her anger belonged to both parents for different reasons.
The video changed again.
Michael sat across from Nora inside the hidden room.
He said:
“Emily will believe you.”
Nora answered:
“Emily believes Patricia every time it becomes uncomfortable.”
“I do not.”
“She invited them back after they called Lily illegitimate.”
Michael looked toward the floor.
“She is still trying to earn parents she never had.”
The sentence hurt because it was true.
I had continued bringing Lily to that house after every insult because I believed enough patience might create a family.
Nora saw my visits as proof that I chose Patricia.
I had not known Nora existed.
Our parents still found a way to make my choices injure her.
The final birthday photographs appeared.
The first showed Patricia holding Lily’s wrists.
The second showed Robert pressing her ankles into the mattress.
The third showed Nora pushing the pillow against Lily’s cheek while crying.
The fourth showed her lifting the pillow when Lily stopped moving.
The fifth showed her placing the bunny beside Lily’s hand.
Nora had participated in the assault.
She had also ended it before Patricia and Robert wanted.
Her forehead injury came from Robert striking her after she refused another photograph.
She escaped with the case when police entered.
Nora looked into the camera.
“I hurt Lily because Robert said he would give Madison the same medication if I refused.”
Madison had been another hostage inside the house.
David stood from his chair.
“What did she say?”
The video continued.
“Madison is not safe with David or Karen. The birthday was arranged because Robert already has control of her medical file.”
Nora lifted another folder.
